  • In this study, the degree of creep damages on the weldment accelerated creep degradation was nondestructively evaluated by replica method. The frequency of creep cavities occurrence has been observed highly at the intercritical HAZ. The life fraction of weldment damaged by creep has shown from 0.25(damage grade: 2) to 0.75(damage grade: 4) when it reptured. The degree of creep damages is considered to be evaluated by the metallographic replica method which is one of nondestructive evaluation methods.

  • Using first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT), a semi-analytical solution is employed to analyze creep damage and remaining life assessment of 304L austenitic stainless steel thick (304L ASS) cylindrical pressure vessels with variable thickness subjected to the temperature gradient and internal non-uniform pressure. Damages are obtained in thick cylinder using Robinson's linear life fraction damage rule, and time to rupture and remaining life assessment is determined by Larson-Miller Parameter (LMP). The thermo-elastic creep response of the material is described by Norton's law. The novelty of the present work is that it seeks to investigate creep damage and life assessment of the vessels with variable thickness made of 304L ASS using LMP based on first-order shear deformation theory. A numerical solution using finite element method (FEM) is also presented and good agreement is found. It is shown that temperature gradient and non-uniform pressure have significant influences on the creep damages and remaining life of the vessel.

  • This paper presents a semi-analytical solution for the creep analysis and life assessment of 304L austenitic stainless steel thick truncated conical shells using multilayered method based on the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The cone is subjected to the non-uniform internal pressure and temperature gradient. Damages are obtained in thick truncated conical shell using Robinson's linear life fraction damage rule, and time to rupture and remaining life assessment is determined by Larson-Miller Parameter (LMP). The creep response of the material is described by Norton's law. In the multilayer method, the truncated cone is divided into n homogeneous disks, and n sets of differential equations with constant coefficients. This set of equations is solved analytically by applying boundary and continuity conditions between the layers. The results obtained analytically have been compared with the numerical results of the finite element method. The results show that the multilayered method based on FSDT has an acceptable amount of accuracy when one wants to obtain radial displacement, radial, circumferential and shear stresses. It is shown that non-uniform pressure has significant influences on the creep damages and remaining life of the truncated cone.

  • Components in thermal power plants are subjected to service conditions under which creep damages take place causing material exhaustion. Comprehensive creep damage investigations have been performed on a 0.5Cr0.5Mo0.25V pipe bend which had been taken out of service after 117,603h and 501 start-ups because of severe cracks. The propagation of creep damage in a long term exposed pipe bend has been analysed by the replication, Indentation and hardness tests. Also, Calculation of creep lifetime has been investigated in order to verify actual lifetime of a damaged pipe bend. By measuring diametrical expansion, Accumulated creep strain and creep strain rate were calculated. Calculated results of creep lifetime on the Larson-Miller Parameter method are good agreement with actual service-exposed hour.

  • In this paper, the progressive deformation and the creep-fatigue damage for the conceptually designed reactor internals of KALIMER(Korea Advanced Liquid MEtal Reactor) are carried out by using the elastic analysis method in the RCC-MR code for normal operating conditions including the thermal load, seismic load (OBE) and dead weight. The maximum operating temperature of this reactor is 53$0^{\circ}C$ and the total service lifetime is 30 years. Thus, the time- dependent creep and stress-rupture effects become quite important in the structural design. The effects of the thermal induced membrane stress on the creep-fatigue damage are investigated with the risk of the elastic follow-up. To calculate the thermal stress, detailed thermal analyses considering conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer mechanisms are carried out with the ANSYS program. Using the results of the elastic analysis, the progressive deformation and creep-fatigue damages are calculated step by step using the RCC-MR in detail. This paper ill be a very useful guide for an actual application of the high temperature structural design of the nuclear power plant accounting for the time-dependent creep and stress-rupture effects.

  • The small punch creep (SPC) test has recently received much attention as a new alternative to the conventional uniaxial creep test because it needs only a miniature-sized specimen directly detached from an operating system or component without any serious sampling damages. However, it is difficult to obtain the equivalent uniaxial creep data directly from the SPC data. As a specimen is deformed by a punch in the SPC test, the test result is sensitive to the friction between them. Finite element analyses with various friction coefficients was performed and showed a tendency of increased SPC life with an increased friction coefficient. The necking position predicted by the SPC simulation with a proper friction coefficient showed good agreement with that observed from the real SPC test. Finally, a noble method to convert the SPC load and displacement rate into the equivalent uniaxial creep stress and strain rate, respectively, was established in this study.

  • In most LMFBR(Liquid Metal Fast Breed Reactor) design, the operating temperature is very high and the time-dependent creep and stress-rupture effects become so important in reactor structural design. Therefore, unlike with conventional PWR, the normal operating conditions can be basically dominant design loading because the hold time at elevated temperature condition is so long and enough to result in severe total creep ratcheting strains during total service lifetime. In this paper, elevated temperature design of the conceptually designed baffle annulus regions of KALIMER(Korea Advanced Liquid MEtal Reactor) reactor internal strictures is carried out for normal operating conditions which have the operating temperature 53$0^{\circ}C$ and the total service lifetime of 30 years. For the elevated temperature design of reactor internal structures, the ASME Code Case N-201-4 is used. Using this code, the time-dependent stress limits, the accumulated total inelastic strain during service lifetime, and the creep-fatigue damages are evaluated with the calculation results by the elastic analysis under conservative assumptions. The application procedures of elevated temperature design of the reactor internal structures using ASME Code Case N-201-4 with the elastic analysis method are described step by step in detail. This paper will be useful guide for actual application of elevated temperature design of various reactor types accounting for creep and stress-rupture effects.

  • It is well known that the dominant damage mechanisms in high-temperature steam turbine facilities such as rotor and casing are creep and fatigue damages. Even though coupling of creep and fatigue should be considered while predicting the life of turbine facilities, the remaining life of large steam turbine facilities is generally determined on the basis of creep damage because the turbines must generate stable base-load power and because they are operated at a high temperature and pressure for a long time. Almost every large steam turbine in Korea has been operated for more than 20 years and is made of steel containing various amounts of principal alloying elements nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium. In this study, creep damage model of 1Cr1Mo1/4V steel for turbine rotor is proposed and that can assess the high temperature creep life of large steam turbine facilities is proposed.

  • In unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), the high temperature results from friction among the air, combustion of fuel in engine and combustion gas of a nozzle. The high temperature may cause serious damages in UAV structure. The Functionally Graded Material (FGM) is chosen as a material of thc engine duct structure. Thermal stress analysis of FGM is performed in this paper. FGM is composed of two constituent materials that are mixed up according to the specific volume fraction distribution in order to withstand high temperature. Therefore, hoop stress, axial stress and shear stress of duct with 2 layers, 4 layers and 8 layers FGM are compared and analyzed respectively. In addition, the creep behavior of FGM used in duct structure of an engine is analyzed for better understanding of FGM characteristics.
