A new concept sea-floating port called mobile harbor has been introduced, in order to resolve the limitation of current above-ground port facilities against the continuous growth of worldwide marine transportation. One of important subjects in the design of a mobile harbor is to secure the dynamic stability against wave-induced excitation, because a relatively large-scale heavy crane system installed at the top of mobile harbor should load/unload containers at sea under the sea state up to level 3. In this context, this paper addresses a two-step sequential analytical-numerical method for analyzing the structural dynamic response of the mobile harbor crane system to the wave-induced rolling excitation. The rigid ship motion of mobile harbor by wave is analytically solved, and the flexible dynamic response of the crane system by the rigid ship motion is analyzed by the finite element method. The hydrodynamic effect between sea water and mobile harbor is reflected by means of the added moment of inertia.
In this paper, the dynamic response analysis of a floating crane with elastic booms and a cargo is performed. The objective is to consider the effects of the elastic boom in the lifting design stage. Governing equations of the motion for the system which consists of interconnected rigid and flexible bodies are derived based on the formulation of flexible multibody system dynamics. To model the boom as a flexible body, floating reference frame and nodal coordinates are used. Coupled surge, pitch, and heave motion of the floating crane with the cargo which has 3 degree of freedom is simulated by solving the equation numerically. Finally, the effects of the elastic boom for the lifting design that the floating crane is required to lift a heavy cargo are discussed by comparing the simulation result between with the elastic boom and with the rigid one.
In general, the swing motion of the crane is controlled and suppressed by activating the trolley motion. In many papers reported by us, we suggested a new type of anti-sway control system of the crane. In the proposed control system, a small auxiliary mass(moving-mass) is installed on the spreader and the swing motion is controlled by moving the auxiliary mass. The actuator reaction against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the container in order to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. The measuring system is based on laser sensor or others. However it is not so useful in real world. Especially, in this paper, the image sensor is used to measures the motions of the spreader and the measured data are fed back to the controller in real time. The applied image processing technique is a kind of robust template matching method which is named Vector Code Correlation (VCC) and devised to consider the real environmental conditions. And the $H_{\infty}$ based control technique is applied to suppress swing motion of the crane. And the experimental result shows that the proposed measurement system based on image sensor and control system is useful and robust to disturbances.
Background: Pre-lifting of the sternum marked a major turning point in pectus excavatum repair. The author developed the crane technique in 2002 and successfully applied it to more than 2,000 cases using sternal wire stitching. However, blind sternal suturing limited the use of the wire-stitch crane. We propose a novel screw for sternal lifting as a new tool for the crane technique. Methods: We developed a screw system strong enough to withstand the pressure needed for sternum lifting. The screw was designed to have a broader thread to hold the bony tissue securely. The screw's sustaining power was tested using the torsion, driving torque, and axial pull-out tests in a polyurethane block and ex-vivo porcine sternum. Results: The screws were easily driven into the sternum, and the head of the screw was connectable to the table-mounted retractor. In the torsion test, the 2° offset torsional yield was 4.53 N·m (reference value, 1 N·m). In the polyurethane block driving torque test, the maximum torque was 0.98 N·m (reference value, 0.70 N·m). The axial pull-out test was 446 N (reference value, 100 N). The maximum pull-out resistance in the ex-vivo porcine sternum model was 1,516 N. Conclusion: The screw crane was strong enough to sustain the chest wall weight to be lifted. Thus, the screws could effectively replace the sternal wire stitching in crane pre-lifting of the sternum. We expect that application of the screw-crane will be easy and that it will improve the safety and success rate of pectus repair surgery.
Material handling equipment such as container cranes and transtainer cranes have made larger and faster to improve the efficiency of container handling. As conditions of use in container terminal have become severe, and also the automation level required has become higher. For the high level automation for transtainer crane, the following characteristics have to be developed 1) Container Terminal Operation & Planning System with high efficiency. 2)Autosteering System of transtainer crane with precise position sensing system using image processing and feedback control system. 3)Automatic Position Identification System with transponder. We have developed an AGSS(Automatic Gantry Steering System) of transtainer crane with image processing technology preferentially. In this paper, the system will be introduced.
Container ships are getting bigger due to the increase in global cargo volume. Therefore, it needs to increase the speed for loading and unloading of containers at the quayside. Traditionally, only one container is handled at once at the quayside due to it's heavy weight. In this paper, a method of handling multiple containers at once using chassis is proposed. Proposed system is consists of a container chassis that can hold three layer stacked containers, transport system that can handle the container chassis including rail-based or vehicle-based roll-on roll-off systems, and dedicated crane system. The conceptual design of crane and transport system that can handle three stacked containers is carried out and verified. The proposed system can be adopted for real quayside container handling system with high speed.

The authors have proposed a linear motor driven container crane system, in which the linear motor to drive trolley chassis is also used to control swaying motion of a hanging container. To utilize the proposed system, it is needed to develop a power saving control system for the linear drive system. In this paper, an integrated control system to minimize required electric power to drive a trolley chassis with the suppressed swaying motion of a hanged container, is proposed. The validity of the proposed control system is investigated by the simulation using Simulink.
We suggest a new type of swing motion control system for a crane system in which a small auxiliary mass is installed on the spreader. The actuator reacting against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the spreader of the container crane to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. In this paper, as the basic and first step, we apply the $H_{\infty}$ control approach to anti-sway control system design problem. And, it will be shown that the proposed control strategy is useful and it can be easily applicable to the real world. So, in this study, we investigate usefulness of the proposed anti-sway system and evaluate system performance through simulation and experimental studies.
