  • It happened a failure on special bolt which supported main landing gear actuator up-lock rod of 00 aircraft. Fracture was occurred at end of center drilled hole and thread machined on bolt. Metallographic, fractographic, and other characteristics of embrittlement analysis and experiments carried out on the failed bolt to find out the reason. Bolt surface was cadmium electroplated(EP) to give lubrication and provide excellent corrosion resistance. Resultly, Bolt was failed due to cadmium embrittlement occurred during baking treatment as well as center drilled hole. for the failure that are relevant to failure analysis and prevention. For their successful functional application, cadmium EP bolts require proper and adequate baking treatment after electroplating, and is complete with no center drilled hole

  • Climate changes, such as increasing of $CO_2$ concentration and global warming, will impact on the carbonation service life of concrete structures. Moreover, slag blended concrete has a lower carbonation resistance than control concrete. This study presents a probabilistic numerical procedure for evaluating the impact of climate change on carbonation service life of slag blended concrete. This numerical procedure considers both corrosion initiation period and corrosion propagation period. First, in corrosion initiation period, by using an integrated hydration-carbonation model, the amount of carbonatable substances, porosity, and carbonation depth are calculated. The probability of corrosion initiation is determined through Monte Carlo method. Second, in corrosion propagation period, a probabilistic model is proposed to calculate the critical corrosion degree at surface cracking, the probability of surface cracking, and service life. Third, based on the service life in corrosion initiation period and corrosion propagation period, the whole service life is calculated. The analysis shows that for concrete structures with 50 years service life, after considering climate changes, the service life reduces about 7%.

  • To study the effect of welding methods on the Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) behavior of welded AISI type 316L and 304 austenitic stainless steel, the Slow Strain Rate Technique(SSRT) has been adopted in the boiling 45 wt% $MgCl_2$ solution. The results are as follows. 1) Welded sections are more susceptible than base metal in SCC, and the rank of SCC, and the rasistance in welding method is TIG, MIG, $CO_2$ and ARC. 2) The Ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and the strain of both base metal and welded joint are reduced as decreasing extension rate. 3) The SCC resistance of 316L base metal and welded sections are superior than that of 304. 4) The tendency of pitting and the SCC suseptibility are agreed well, and the SCC site is welded deposit section in 316L whereas HAZ in 304.

  • With the introduction of durability examination into design code of concrete structure, a prediction of early-age behavior of concrete and its cracking resistance becomes very important. But, the early-age behaviors such as hydration, micro-structure development, moisture transport and mechanical properties development is quite complicated and coupled each other, and thus those can not be solved independently. One way to analyze those is to model their behaviors analytically and solve those computationally within a unified framework. In this paper, we propose a finite element technique to predict the early-age behaviors of concrete within the unified framework. The technique is applied to evaluatio of cracking in a massive concrete structure and then the analysis results are discussed.

  • Nonlinear analysis of the reinforced concrete beam subjected to torsion is presented. Seventeen equations involving seventeen variables are derived from the equilibrium equation, compatibility equation, and the material constitutive laws to solve the torsion problem. Newton method was used to solve the nonlinear simultaneous equations and efficient algorithms are proposed. Present model covers the behavior of reinforced concrete beam under pure torsion from service load range to ultimate stage. Tensile resistance of concrete after cracking is appropriately considered. The softened concrete truss model and the average stress-strain relations of concrete and steel are used. To verify the validity of present model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to ACI-99 code and the ultimate torsional moment by present model are compared to experimental torsional strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The ultimate torsional moment strengths by the present model show good results.

  • Niobium microalloying is effective in hot-rolled and cold-rolled steels by providing a fine-grained microstructure resulting in increased strength. To optimize the strengthening effect, alloy design and hot-rolling conditions have to be adapted. As a key issue the dissolution and precipitation characteristics of Nb are discussed in particular with regard to the run-out table conditions. It is then considered how the hot-rolled microstructure and the solute state of Nb interact with the hot-dip galvanizing cycle. The adjusted conditions allow controlling the morphology and distribution of phases in the cold-rolled annealed material. Additional precipitation hardening can be achieved as well. The derived options can be readily applied to produce conventional HSLA and IF high strength steels as well as to modern multiphase steels. It will be explained how important application properties such as strength, elongation, bendability, weldability and delayed cracking resistance can be influenced in a controlled and favorable way. Examples of practical relevance and experience are given.

  • Plastic shrindage cracking occurs at the exposed surfaces of freshly placed concrete due to consoilidation of the concrete mass and rapid evaporation of water from the surface. This so called shrindage craking is a major concern for concrete, especially for been performed to obtain the plastic shrindage porperties of cellolus fiber reinforced concrete. The results of tests of the cellolus fiber were compared with plain and polypropylene fibers. Test results indicated that cellolus fiber reinforcement showed an aility to reduce the total crack area and maximum crack width significantly.

  • PBGA(Plastic Ball Grid Array) is composed of some materials such as PCB(Printed Circuit Board), epoxy molding compound, die attach and so on. Reliability of PBGA package is weak compared with plastic packages. The weak points of reliability are the lower resistance to popcorn cracking, which is induced by moisture absorption in PCB, and the pressure cooker test corrosion, which is the basic problem due to the material characteristics of PCB. Introducing the PCB baking and the plasma treatment cleared the popcorn cracking phenomenon. The PCB baking and plasma treatment reduced the epoxy void by eliminating the source of moisture vaporization during the epoxy curing and enhanced the adhesion between PCB and epoxy. Also, plasma treatment enhanced the wettability of epoxy on PCB. The problem of corrosion is cleared using multi-functional epoxy. This type of EMC(Epoxy Molding Compound) is recommended in package using PCB as a substrate. (Received November 19, 1999)
