  • Background: The current study investigates the anti-stress effects of clove (Eugenia caryophyllus) extracts (0, 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg) on serum antioxidant biomarkers, immune response, immunological organ growth index, and expression levels of acute phase proteins (APPs); ovotransferrin (OVT), ceruloplasmin (CP), ceruloplasmin (AGP), C-reactive protein (CRP), and serum amyloid-A (SAA) mRNA in the immunological organs of 63-d-old male black-meated Silkie fowls subjected to 21 d chronic heat stress at $35{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. Results: The results demonstrated that clove extract supplementation in the diet of Silkie fowls subjected to elevated temperature (ET) improve growth performance, immune responses, and suppressed the activities of glutathion peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and thioredoxin reductase (TXNRD); reduced serum malonaldehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) concentrations when compared with fowls raised under thermoneutral condition (TC). Upon chronic heat stress and supplementation of clove extracts, the Silkie fowls showed a linear increase in GSH-Px, SOD, CAT, and TXNRD activities (P = 0.01) compared with fowls fed diets without clove extract. ET decreased (P < 0.05) the growth index of the liver, spleen, bursa of Fabricius and thymus. However, the growth index of the liver, spleen, bursa of Fabricius and thymus increased significantly (P < 0.05) which corresponded to an increase in clove supplemented levels. The expression of OVT, CP, AGP, CRP, and SAA mRNA in the liver, spleen, bursa of Fabricius and thymus were elevated (P < 0.01) by ET compared with those maintained at TC. Nevertheless, clove mitigates heat stress-induced overexpression of OVT, CP, AGP, CRP and SAA mRNA in the immune organs of fowls fed 400 mg clove/kg compared to other groups. Conclusions: The results showed that clove extracts supplementation decreased oxidative stress in the heat-stressed black-meated fowls by alleviating negative effects of heat stress via improvement in growth performance, antioxidant defense mechanisms, immunity, and regulate the expression of acute phase genes in the liver and immunological organs.

  • A comprehensive safety evaluation was conducted to assess the potential allergenicity of newly introduced proteins in genetically modified (GM) crops. We assessed the allergenicity of CP4 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) in GM soybeans. This assessment was performed by IgE immunoblotting with soy-allergic children's sera, amino acid sequence homology with known allergens, and the digestibility of CP4 EPSPS. No differences in IgE-antigen binding by immunoblotting were found between GM soy samples and the corresponding non-GM samples. Based on the comparison of EPSPS amino acid sequence homology with current allergen databases, no known allergen was found. In addition, CP4 EPSPS protein was rapidly digested by simulated gastric fluid (SGF). Taken together, these results indicate that GM soybeans have no allergenicity in children and are as safe as conventional soybeans.

  • Scholars suggests global citizenship education(GCE) as an important direction for the future education. Although many academic discussions have been internationally going on, the studies in Korea are still on the beginning stage. Thus, it is asserted that studies for GCE should be proceeded more actively and widely, especially for a theoretical background because it might give a concrete direction for GCE. In the international trend, studies suggest that GCE should be discussed among post-modernism, post-colonialism, and critical theory as theoretical framework. So, this study purports to find a theoretical framework which represents those three. It is critical pedagogy (CP) which also includes educational values for GCE. The reason is because CP tries to achieve emancipation in terms of consciousness, reason and rationality through educational praxis and it should be a background for GCE in terns of current situation in the world. Therefore, this study asserts and tries to prove that CP is currently at the center of theoretical backgrounds for GCE.

  • This paper discusses the types and functions of English subordinate clauses, whether English subordinate clauses (SC) are headed by a Complementizer (CP) or headed by a lexical (but not functional) Preposition (PP). Furthermore, unlike the standard classification, the current paper provides a finer-grained analysis and classification of English SCs. The traditional or prescriptive view on the functions of English SCs includes Noun SC such as complement clauses, Adjectival SC including relative clauses, and Adverbial SCs that cover a garden variety of subordinators. Added to the existing classification of subordination in English is what I notate as Verbless subordinate clause (V-less SC). Of these 4 different types of subordinate clauses with different functions, properties, and distributions, Subjectless Verbless subordinate clause is further divided into Smallest small clause (SSC) which accounts for English subordination mechanism more uniformly and consistently with respect to their clausal architecture, especially when the subordinate clause is neither PP nor CP.

  • The offshore structures exposed to harsh corrosive such as the marine environment is essential for the quality management technique throughout the life cycle of initial design, construction and operation. Also, it should satisfy the design life and ensure the safety of the substructure with optimization of design process. This study focused on optimization of design condition for corrosion protection of wind turbine structure and computational analyzing was performed to evaluate the performance of corrosion protection with utilizing practical experimental data. We expect this analytical study contribute to improve the corrosion maintenance stability and economical efficiency of designing wind turbine structures. As a result, the design of cathodic protection system using sacrificial anodes required accurate identification of current density in order to meet the long term design life, which can be seen that a change of structure surface's coating breakdown factor is one of the key influencing factors.

  • This paper discusses the 3-level charge pumping (CP) method in planar-type Silicon-Oxide-High-k-Oxide-Silicon (SOHOS) and Silicon-Oxide-Nitride-Oxide-Silicon (SONOS) devices to find out the reason of the degradation of data retention properties. In the CP technique, pulses are applied to the gate of the MOSFET which alternately fill the traps with electrons and holes, thereby causing a recombination current Icp to flow in the substrate. The 3-level charge pumping method may be used to determine not only interface trap densities but also capture cross sections as a function of trap energy. By applying this method, SOHOS device found to have a higher interface trap density than SONOS device. Therefore, degradation of data retention characteristics is attributed to the many interface trap sites.

  • To efficiently use frequency resources, the next 6th generation mobile communication technology must solve the problem of out-of-band emission (OoBE) of cyclic prefix (CP) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which is not solved in 5th generation technology. This study describes a new zero insertion technique to replace an existing filtering scheme to solve this internal problem in OFDM signals. In the development of the proposed scheme, a precoder with a two-dimensional structure is first designed by generating a two-dimensional mapper and using the specialty of each matrix. A spectral shaping technique based on zero insertion instead of a long filter is proposed, so it can be applied not only to long OFDM symbols, but also very short ones. The proposed method shows that the transmitted signal is completely blocked at the bandwidth boundaries of signals according to the current standards, and it is confirmed that the proposed scheme is ideal with respect to bit error rate (BER) performance because its BER is the same as that of CP-OFDM. In addition, the proposed scheme can transformed into a real time structure through vectorizing process with minimal complexity.

  • Moment-resisting frames (MRFs) are among the most conventional steel structures for mid-rise buildings in many earthquake-prone cities. Here, a simplified performance-based methodology is proposed for the seismic collapse capacity assessment of these buildings. This method employs a novel multi-mode pushover analysis to determine the engineering demand parameters (EDPs) of the regular steel MRFs up to the collapse prevention (CP) performance level. The modal combination coefficients used in the proposed pushover analysis, are obtained from two metaheuristic optimization algorithms and a fitting procedure. The design variables for the optimization process are the inter-story drift ratio profiles resulting from the multi-mode pushover analyses, and the objective values are the outcomes of the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). Here, the collapse capacity of the structures is assessed in three to five steps, using a modified IDA procedure. A series of regular mid-rise steel MRFs are selected and analyzed to calculate the modal combination coefficients and to validate the proposed approach. The new methodology is verified against the current existing approaches. This comparison shows that the suggested method more accurately evaluates the EDPs and the collapse capacity of the regular MRFs in a robust and easy to implement way.

  • The cover plate and the building loads often make the semi-covered deep excavations with existing buildings bearing asymmetric load, presenting different deformation characteristics with normal excavations, which is not absolutely clear in current studies. Based on a typical engineering, the building storeys, the basement storeys, the pile length, the existence of the cover plate (CP) and the depth of the diaphragm walls (DW) were selected as variables, and 44 groups of simulation were designed to study the influence of existing buildings and the semi-covered supporting system on the deformation of the excavations. The results showed that the maximum lateral displacement of DW, δhm, and the depth of δhm, Hm, are affected seriously by the building storeys and the basement storeys. Asymmetric structures and loading lead to certain lateral displacement of DW at the beginning of excavation, resulting in different relationships between δhm and excavation depth, H. The maximum surface settlement outside the pit, δvm, increases significantly and the location, dm, moves away from the pit with the building storeys increases. δvm has a quadratic correlation with H due to the existing buildings. CP and building load will affect the style of the lateral displacement curve of DW seriously in different aspects.

  • With the increasing demand for mobile devices featuring multi-touch operation, extensive research is being conducted on touch screen panel (TSP) Readout ICs (ROICs) that should possess low power consumption, compact chip size, and immunity to external noise. Therefore, this paper discusses capacitive touch sensors and their readout circuits, and it introduces research trends in various circuit designs that are robust against external noise sources. The recent state-of-the-art TSP ROICs have primarily focused on minimizing the impact of parasitic capacitance (Cp) caused by thin panel thickness. The large Cp can be effectively compensated using an area-efficient current compensator and Current Conveyor (CC), while a display noise reduction scheme utilizing a noise-antenna (NA) electrode significantly improves the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Based on these achievements, it is expected that future TSP ROICs will be capable of stable operation with thinner and flexible Touch Screen Panels (TSPs).
