This paper presents a design of a tuned liquid mass damper(TLMD) for controlling bi-directional response of high-rise building structure subjected to windload. The proposed damper behaves as a tuned mass damper(TMD) of which mass is regarded as the mass of a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) and the case wall of the TLCD itself in one direction and the TLCD in the other direction. Because the proposed device has coupled design parameter along two orthogonal directions, it is very important to select designing components by optimal fine tuning. In the designing TLMD, for easy maintenance, the rubber-bearing with small springs was applied in TMD direction. In this study, the Songdo New City Tower 1A in Korea, which has been designed and constructed two TLCDs in order to control bi-directional response, was chosen as the model building structure. The results of rotation test proved the effectiveness of bi-directional behavior of TLMD.
Investigations of the commercial aircraft impact effect on nuclear island infrastructures have been drawing extensive attention, and this paper aims to perform the safety assessment of Generation III nuclear power plant (NPP) buildings subjected to typical commercial aircrafts crash. At present Part II, based on the verified finite element (FE) models of aircrafts Airbus A320 and A380, as well as the NPP containment and auxiliary buildings in Part I of this paper, the whole collision process is reproduced numerically by adopting the coupled missile-target interaction approach with the finite element code LS-DYNA. The impact induced damage of NPP plant under four impact locations of containment (cylinder, air intake, conical roof and PCS water tank) and two impact locations of auxiliary buildings (exterior wall and roof of spent fuel pool room) are evaluated. Furthermore, by considering the inner structures in the containment and raft foundation of NPP, the structural vibration analyses are conducted under two impact locations (middle height of cylinder, main control room in the auxiliary buildings). It indicates that, within the discussed scenarios, NPP structures can withstand the impact of both two aircrafts, while the functionality of internal equipment on higher floors will be affected to some extent under impact induced vibrations, and A380 aircraft will cause more serious structural damage and vibrations than A320 aircraft. The present work can provide helpful references to assess the safety of the structures and inner equipment of NPP plant under commercial aircraft impact.

Recently, studies to reduce vibration and noise of automobiles have been actively conducted. However, previous studies did not concentrate on the optimization of the mount system with passive or active mounts. This study analytically studies an active mounting system with three active structural paths between source and receiver and the feasibility has been verified. Active mounting system has a coupled structure of piezoelectric stack actuators and passive mounts. A dynamic model of the whole system is prepared and the control force and phase of the stack actuators in each path are determined to target full isolation of each path. Its performance on vibration attenuation is investigated and based on it, optimized combinations of passive and active paths for the best attenuation are presented.
In this study, the dynamic characteristics of an air spring connected with an external chamber through a flexible tube are examined. The uncoupled dynamic parameters of the air spring are identified through experiments, followed by the suggestion of a model-based approach to obtain the remaining coupled dynamic parameters using the various frequency response functions derived in PART I paper [1]. To improve or control the damping characteristics of the air spring, this vibration isolation air spring system is physically established in laboratory scale. And we attempt to identify various parameters used to describe to air spring system by both theoretically [1] and experimentally, which is performed in this report. The damping parameter of the tube system is identified through experiments on the system incorporated with the air cylinder, and a nonlinear regression procedure is employed to find solutions. The resulting value is used to expect the frequency response function of dynamic pressure in the top chamber (air spring) with respect to that in the bottom chamber (external chamber). Comparison with the experimental data supports the validity of the present estimation procedures. Also, the dynamic mechanism of the damping effects particularly in a low frequency range is investigated through this experimental endeavor.

Bonding strength of shotcrete is a significant influential factor which plays the role of collapse prevention of tunnel crown and of debonding prevention of shotcrete induced by the blasting vibration. Thus, the evaluation of the shotcrete bonding state is one of the core components for shotcrete quality control. In this study, the peak particle velocities induced by blasting were measured on the shotcrete in a tunnel construction site and its effect on the bonding state of shotcrete is investigated. Drilling and blasting technique was used for the excavation of intersection tunnel connecting the main tunnel with the service tunnel. Blast-induced vibrations were monitored at some points of the main tunnel and the service tunnel. The shotcrete bonding state was evaluated by using impact-echo test coupled with the time-frequency domain analysis which is called short-time Fourier transformation. Analysis results of blast-induced vibrations and the time-frequency domain impact-echo signals showed that the blasting condition applied to the excavation of intersection tunnel hardly affects on the tunnel shotcrete bonding state. The general blasting practice in Korea was evaluated to have a minor negative impact on shotcrete quality.

The proposed hybrid damper installs at a coupling beam and consists of a high-damping rubber (HDR) and steel pin. The proposed hybrid damper adopted a pin-lock system acts as a viscoelastic damper under wind load (small displacement) while it behaves as a hysteretic damper under earthquake load (large displacement). In this paper, the pin-lock mechanism and structural performance of the proposed hybrid damper is evaluated through experiment. Experiments were carried out with the variables which displacement, loading frequency and steel pin quantities were used. Test results showed that the pin-lock mechanism and the performance of the hybrid damper under a large displacement were verified. Also equivalent damping ratios of HDR were increasing at a small displacement as displacement amplitudes were increasing. However HDR did not depend on frequency.

Unsymmetrical high-rise buildings (HRBs) subjected to earthquake represent a difficult challenge to structural engineering, especially taking into consideration the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI). L-shape in plan HRBs suffer from big straining actions when are subjected to an earthquake (in x- or y-direction, or both x- and y- directions). Additionally, the disastrous effect of seismic pounding may appear between two adjacent unsymmetrical HRBs. For two unsymmetrical L-shape in plan HRBs subjected to earthquake in three different direction cases (x, y, or both), including the SSI effect, different methods are investigated to mitigate the seismic pounding and thus protect these types of structures under the earthquake effect. The most effective technique to mitigate the seismic pounding and help in seismically protecting these adjacent HRBs is found herein to be the use of a combination of pounding tuned mass dampers (PTMDs) all over the height (at the connection points) together with tuned mass dampers (TMDs) on the top of both buildings.

In this study, a simplified design procedure for friction dampers of a multi-story structure in order to reduce seismic response is proposed. To get insight for control effect of the structure with friction dampers is difficult, because of a nonlinear characteristic by a friction damper. Since a control force of a friction damper is influenced by coupling velocity between floors, adjoining modes are coupled. Thus structural response are derived by assuming steady-state response in resonance. As it is impossible that an exact solution is obtained for seismic load, first, a closed form solution can be achieved under harmonic vibration. Second, to convert a three-story building into a single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF) structure, modal analysis is performed. Third, an equivalent damping ratio is derived with utilizing closed form solution. And response reducing factor is proposed by it. Finally, friction force of a damper is designed for using response reducing factor, and then designed dampers are verified for seven seismic data. The nonlinear analysis results confirm the validity of the proposed procedure.
Base-isolation of a primary structure generally decrete the seismic response of its own and the secondary structure. It may cause an adverse effect on the seismic response of secondary system when the system is submerged and subject to a considerable hydrodynamic effect. In this paper, it is shown how, and how much, the base isolation of the primary structure can affect the secondary system response in extreme cases through dynamic analysis of a simplified coupled model for a submerged secondary system and a base-isolated primary structure. As an aseismatic design approach to reduce the response of the submerged system, optimization of the fluid gap, which controls the hydrodynamic mass effect, is performed. As an alternative approach in case where the control of fluid gap is unrealistic, application of base isolation to the submerged system is suggested. Effectiveness of various combinations of the primary base and secondary base isolations are compared.

The purpose of this study is to examine the dynamic characteristics of low, medium and high speed Maglev trains and guideways through dynamic interaction analysis. The coupled dynamic equations of motion for a vehicle of 10-dof and the associated guideway girders are developed by superposing vibration modes of the girder itself. The controller used in the UTM-01 Maglev vehicle is adopted to control the air gap between the bogie and guideway in this study. The effect of roughness, the guideway deflection-ratio and vehicle speed on the dynamic response of the maglev vehicle and guideway are then investigated using the 4th Runge-Kutta method. From the numerical simulation, it is found that the air gap increases with an increase of vehicle speed and the roughness condition. In particular, the dynamic magnification factor of the guideway girder is small at low and medium speeds, but the factor is noticeable at super-high speeds.
