A New Design Approach for Asymmetric Coupled-Section Marchand Balun

  • A systematic design for asymmetric coupled-section Marchand baluns is presented. Asymmetrically coupled transmission lines in multilayer configuration are exploited for constructing Marchand baluns. Design equations for characteristic impedance and electrical length of asymmetrical coupled transmission lines are derived for establishing a systematic design procedure. Novel Marchand balun based on these design equations is composed of two identical asymmetrical coupled transmission lines. However, contrary to the general conventional design approach where ranges for characteristic impedances of coupled lines are ambiguously capitalized, values for characteristic impedance and length are explicitly expressed. Our approach is fundamentally different from the design method using coupling coefficients where solution for coupling coefficient is inherently restricted. To verify the proposed method, one design example is performed for wideband Marchand balun in multilayer configuration, and is fabricated for verifying the design procedure proposed. Maintaining the return loss more than 10 dB, the bandwidth is measured from 0.43 to 1.0 GHz, where $S_{21}$ and $S_{31}$ show better than -4 dB. The measured phase and amplitude imbalances illustrate 0.5 dB and ${\pm}5^{\circ}$, respectively.

  • 일반적인 결합불균일선로에 대한 이론을 적용하여 결합삼각함수선로(CTTL)의 특성을 연구하였다. 우선 CTTL의 4-Port 전달메이트릭스 퍼래미터를 유도한 다음 이것을 사용하여 CTTL을 이용한 전역통과회로와 방향통합전압을 해석하였다. 선로에 연한 결합계수의 변화에 따라서 전역통도관로의 위상특성과 방향성결합기의 결합전압의 크기의 변화를 상세하게 연구하였다. 최후로 CTTL를 사용한 광대역 90° 차동위상추이기와 고역통과 방향성통합기의 설계예를 들고 그 실현방법을 고찰하였다. Characteristics of coupled trigonometric transmission lines (CTTL) are studies based on the theory of general coupled nonuniform transmission lines. First, the 4-port transmission matrix parameters of networks and directional couplers using CTTL. The phase slrift characteristic of the all-pass networks and the magnitude characteristic of the directional couplers are studied in detail for various coupling and a high-pass small ripple directional coupler using CTTL are given and their physical realization is considered.

결합선로의 과도해석과 불균일선로에 잠재된 누화 억압 능력에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Transient Analysis of Coupled Lines and Ability of Crosstalk Suppression Inherent to Nonuniform Lines)

  • The method is presented which predicts voltage waveforms at each nodes inter-connected arbitrarily on the coupled transmission lines by extracting the node connection condition to be included in the modal telegrapher's equation, hence analyzing the mechanism of waveform propagation on transmission lines. It is shown that it is also possible to analyze efficiently the coupled nonuniform lines. And then the nonuniformity of coupled lines is demonstrated for suppressing the crosstalk spikes using the one-dimensional inverse-scattering control theory. The predicted waveforms by presented method are analyzed and verified by comparison with those by the generalized S-parameter technique.

Signal Transient and Crosstalk Model of Capacitively and Inductively Coupled VLSI Interconnect Lines

  • Analytical compact form models for the signal transients and crosstalk noise of inductive-effect-prominent multi-coupled RLC lines are developed. Capacitive and inductive coupling effects are investigated and formulated in terms of the equivalent transmission line model and transmission line parameters for fundamental modes. The signal transients and crosstalk noise expressions of two coupled lines are derived by using a waveform approximation technique. It is shown that the models have excellent agreement with SPICE simulation.

  • A new measurement method of coupled transmission line characteristics is described. This method presents precision values of even-and odd-mode impedances as well as effective dielectric constants of symmetric parallel coupled microstrip lines from the scalar quantities obtained by transmission coefficients at two different resonance frequencies. Especially these values include dispersion effects in the measured frequency band. The measured impedances and effective dielectric constants of actually fabricated coupled lines on the Teflon substrates with low dielectric constants are good agreement with predicted values. And the experimental pass band characteristics of single section resonator by using previously designed coupled lines agree well with theoretical values.

  • The crosstalk among coupled microstrip lines is the major limiting factors of signal qualities in the high-speed digital and communication equipment. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is applied to analyze the crosstalk between the coupled microstrip lines. The proposed structures of the coupled microstrip lines are investigated to reduce the coupling in a simple way by modifying their ground plane with an optimum gap. The examples of these structures with the different sizes of the gaps on their ground plane are studied. These structures are considered as the four-port network to evaluate transmission efficiency, near- and far-end crosstalk. Gaussian pulse is excited to evaluate the frequency characteristics from dc to 30 ㎓. The transmission efficiency, near- and far-end crosstalk of each structure of the coupled microstrip lines are demonstrated. The numerical results of this study show that the majority of crosstalk is the far-end crosstalk. The usage of the optimum gap on the ground plane can reduce the far-end crosstalk of the coupled microstrip lines while the transmission efficiency is nearly equal.

  • PCB 설계시 전송선간에 발생하는 전자기적 결합 현상은 장비의 동작을 저감시키는 요인이 될 수 있다. 이런 결합 현상은 전송선과 라이저를 통해 흐르는 전류에 의해 생기는 전자기계에 의해 발생한다. 본 논문에서는 PCB상에 놓여 있는 굽은 결합 선로의 누화를 해석하기 위한 개선된 방법을 제안하고 고찰해 보고자 한다. 굽은 결합 선로에 대한 기존의 누화 해석은 굽은 결합 선로의 굽은 지점을 기준으로 각 구간으로 나누고 각 구간을ABCD 행렬로 나타내어 이를 직렬 연결한 방법을 이용하였다. 하지만 본 논문에서 제안하는 누화 해석 방법은 기존의 방법과는 달리 결합 현상을 계산할 때의 결합 구간을 소스가 인가되는 전송선을 인접한 전송선으로 수직 투영시킨 구간만이 아닌 인접한 전송선의 전 구간에 영향을 준다고 보고 계산을 하는 개선된 회로 접근법에 의해 계산하였다. 마지막으로, 몇 가지 굽은 결합 선로 모델들에 대해서 계산한 결과와 측정한 결과를 비교함으로써 본 논문에서 제안하는 누화 해석 방법의 타당성을 보였다.

  • in this paper, the propagation characteristics of the dominant modes in multiple coupled microstrip lines on a magnetized ferrite substrate are analyzed. The propagation constants and characteristic impedances are calculated by using the spectral domain method. With the numerical results, multi-port impedance parameters as well as scattering parameters are derived from nonreciprocal transmission line equations which are consistent with conventional transmission line theory. In additon, the numerical resutls of nonreciprocal characteristics for various values of structural, material parameters, and external magnetic fields are also presented.

  • The prediction of crosstalk in one of important problems in estimating the EMC of a system for high speed digital signal transmission. Crosstalk curves are shown in terms of characteristic impedance of lines spacing between lines and rise time of pulse by using general multiple coupled transmission line equation and harmonic-balance method. The coupled symmetrical two-line on dielectric material epoxy-glass FR 4(${\varepsilon}_r$), is fabricated to measure crosstalk occuring at the near end and far end of the passive line. The inter-line is inserted to reduce crosstalk between two microstrip lines. The simulation results and the measurement results are shown and found to be very close.

효율적인 노드분할법을 통한 임의 결선된 전송선로상의 고속 펄스 전송 해석 (Analysis of High-Speed Pulse Propagation on Arbitrarily Interconnected Transmission Lines by an Efficient Node Discretization Technique)

  • 임의로 결선된 디지털 전송선로의 과도응답을 효율적인 노드분할 기법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 제시한 노드분할 기법은 전송선로를 분할하여 해석할 수 있도록 하므로서 연결선의 임의 위치에서의 과도파형을 쉽게 예측할 수 있다. 일반성을 보이기 위해 임의로 연결된 분산특성을 갖는 마이크로스트립 다도체 전송선로들을 예로 들어 분석하였다. 결합선로의 주파수의존성 등가 회로정수들은 스펙트럼 영역 기법(SDA)을 사용하여 도출하였다. 고속 마이크로스트립 결합선로 상에 인가되는 펄스의 펄스폭 변화가 누화에 미치는 영향도 동시에 검토하였다. 선로의 길이와 기판 유전율이 증가하면 누화 피크값이 단조롭게 증가한다는 기존의 결과와는 달리 펄스폭이 수 ps에 이르면 오히려 감소하는 특성을 볼 수 있었다. 제시한 노드분할 기법을 사용한 결과를 일반화된 S-행렬 기법을 사용한 결과와 비교하므로서 타당성을 보였다.
