Microflute has several advantages of production cost and strength compared to board. Production technology of microflute has not been fully explored. Therefore suitability of corrugating medium for microflute shape formation was analyzed by measuring (1) lengths of corrugating medium before flute formation, (2) those after flute formation but before conditioning and (3) those after flute formation and after conditioning. The suitability of corrugating medium was better when the length change before and after conditioning after flute formation was smaller, because flute sustained its form. The suitability of corrugating medium for microflute shape formation was better when the flute height after flute formation was higher. The suitability of corrugating medium was analyzed depending on properties of corrugating medium in terms of fiber bonding strength and paper stiffness. For better microflute shape formation and its preservation it was found that fiber bonding should be increased, proper stiffness was required, and resistance to water absorption from surroundings should be increased.
Changes in the compressive strength of four typical corrugating mediums (K$_2$A, AS and S) as affected by relative humidity conditions were compared and their relative cost effectiveness was analysed. All mediums lost their compressive strength as relative humidity increased. at the relative humidity of 93% , As medium lost 58% of its initial strength while S medium did about 40%. Calculations of compress factor and compress factor by price indicated that $K_2$ medium was the most cost effective and maintained the highest compressive strength among the mediums tested. It was recommended that $K_2$ medium could be effectively used to make corrugated fiberboard especially for fresh agricultural product packaging .
This study was carried out for effective utilization of recycling resources to investigate the repulping conditions of car air filter waste paper and to evaluate the application into corrugating medium papermaking by blending these repulped pulps. Car air filter waste paper was made of virgin BKP and it was dipped into phenol resin solution. It was well disintegrated by laboratory Valley beater with 10%(basis on oven-dried pulp weight) NaOH addition and defoamer usage. The optimal temperature, beating consistency and treatment time were mainly $40^{\circ}C$, 1% and $30{\sim}40$ minutes, respectively. Handsheets were prepared with various blending ratios between air filter recycled pulp and KOCC. In the case of $10{\sim}20%$ substitution with air filter recycled pulp, physical properties reductions as compressive strength and burst strength of sheets were lower than others. These results showed more favour than the partial substitution of KOCC for corrugating medium even though some strength reduction of paper. It was also observed that the waste water of air filter recycling was not affective to environmental problems.
The top-to-bottom compression strength of corrugated board box is the most important mode of loading during it's no, and it depends largely on the edgewise compression strength of the corrugated board in the cross-machine direction and to a considerable extent on the flexural stiffness in both principal directions (CD; cross-machine direction, MD; machine direction) of the corrugated board. Corrugated board is a sandwich structure with an orthotropic property. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the principal design parameters for board combination of corrugated board from the viewpoint of bending strength through the finite element analysis [FEA] fur the various corrugated board. In general, the flexural stiffness [FS] in the MD was 2-3 times larger than that in the CD, and the effect of liner for the FS of corrugated board was much bigger than that of corrugating medium. The flexural stiffness index [FSI] was high when the stiffness of liner was in the order of inner, outer, and middle liner in double-wall corrugated board [DW], and the effect of the stiffness arrangement or itself reinforcement of corrugating medium on the FSI was not high. In single-wall corrugated board [SW] with DW. the variation of FSI with itself stiffness reinforcement of liner was much bigger than that with stiffness arrangement of liner. The highest FSI was at the ratio of about 2:1:2 for basis weight distribution of outer, middle, and inner liner if the stiffness of liner and total basis weight of corrugated board were equal in DW Secondarily. basis weight was in the order of inner, outer, and middle liner. However, the variation of FSI with basis weight distribution between liner and corrugating medium was much bigger than that with itself basis weight distribution ratio of liner and corrugating medium respectively in both DW and SW. md the FSI was high as more total basis weight was divided into liner. These phenomena fur board combination of corrugated board based on the FEA were well verified by experimental investigation.
Suitability of corrugating medium for microflute shape formation was analyzed in terms of fiber bonding strength and paper stiffness. Cationic starch and oxidized starch were applied to corrugating medium's surface by bar coater in order to compare the relative importance of stiffness and fiber bonding on microflute formation. It was found that cationic starch was beneficial for better stiffness and oxidized starch was beneficial for better fiber bonding. The results of the decreasing ratio of length by flute formation, the calculated conditioning effect, and the flute height before and after conditioning treatment were obtained. For better microflute shape formation and its preservation it was found that fiber bonding strength should be increased, proper stiffness was required, and resistance to water absorption from surroundings should be increased.
The document archives like official documents, books, maps and historic paper artifacts are primarily based on the organic cellulosic materials. As the passage of time, these organic cellulosic materials are slowly deteriorated by various aging factors, like light, polluted air and biological fungi. Many researchers have been carried out the examination method of deteriorating origins, the mechanism of aging hysteresis, and the preserving method of archival materials. One of the most simple and easiest ways for conservation of organic archival documents is the proper storage under environmental control. Corrugated board for archival quality container has been developed and already used in advanced country, like Japan, USA, German, UK and Europe. In case of Korea, corrugated board for archival quality container has been used a decade ago, but totally imported. This study was tried to develop the corrugated board for archival quality container. Liner and corrugated medium were specially produced and finally manufactured to E flute corrugated board. The physical and strength properties of permanent base paper and corrugated board were evaluated, and compared with imported corrugated board. 4 kinds of corrugating adhesives were considered various in order to investigate optimum adhesive for flute development between liner and corrugating medium, and evaluate adhesion strength under conditions of storage and curing temperatures.
A new compressive strength test specimen for linerboard and medium was developed, and tested for its agreement with conventional testing methods such as RCT and STFI. The new specimen enables compressive testing under the changing humidity and temperature. Experimental results showed that the new specimen gave equivalent compressive strengths as the other conventional methods at a constant temperature and humidity. We'll apply the methods under the cyclic humidity and temperature conditions.
