  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how first and second graders in middle school take in integrated understanding about the concept of function. The data was collected through the questionnaire conducted by the first and second-year students at A, B middle school in Cheongju. The questionnaire consisted of 14 questions related to the extent of understanding a concept of function, the ability to express function and to translate function. The results are summarized as follows. First, the percentage of correct answer made a difference according to the types of representation. Questions leading students to translate a task into a table or an equation showed quite high correct response rates. However, questions asking students to translate a task into graphs showed high incorrect responses. Second, the result shows that students have the different viewpoints depending on their grades when they have to determine whether the suggested situation belongs to function. The first-year students tended to consider function as the concept of 'definition'. On the other hand, the second-year students emphasized 'equation' of function. Finally, only a few students can distinguish the various situations and representations into the definition of function. This result shows that students didn't get the integrated understanding of the concept of function.

  • Eyewear must not be judged only by the skill of the designer who created it. For production of successful eyewear, we must always take into account the point of view of the wearer. Because eyewear is above all a means to correct of the visual acuity, it is a medical instrument. Therefore in any case, it should not submit to the dictatorship of fashion designer. The eyewear designer's role may therefore be summarized in following way: to have a subtle sensitivity and inspiration, and originality, know-how to develop a symbiosis between functionality and technical know-how, harmonious production of the design and concept of the human engineering. At present, the way of designing has undergone a big change to enabling us to supply the customer with technical design and rapid prototyping of eyewear with assistance to computer processing such as computer graphic and cad/cam.

  • The partial free order feature of Korean makes grammar size represented by CFG too big and that's why grammar has to contain all the ordered words. There are some problems to parse spoken language, because spontaneous spoken language has special features such as meaningless words, repetitious speech, etc. So, in this paper, we define 'Core-Concept' as the necessary element for parsing and we describe grammar only using Core-Concept. And we can prevent grammar from becoming very large and reduce an additional parsing burden as we select. Core-Concept described in grammar as parsing element. Through this strategy, we present that the simplified grammar can give us more efficient method to get right results. Experiments show that our parsing strategy has an average of 98% or over success rate in correct parsing results.

  • This paper describes a concept-based question analysis to analyze concept which is more important than keyword for the accurate answer extraction. Our idea is that we can extract correct answers from various paragraphs with different structures when we use well-defined concepts because concepts occurred in questions of same answer type are similar. That is, we will analyze the syntactic and semantic role of each word or phrase in a question in order to extract more relevant documents and more accurate answer in them. For each answer type, we define a concept frame which is composed of concepts commonly occurred in that type of questions and analyze user's question by filling a concept frame with a word or phrase. Empirical results show that our concept-based question analysis can extract more accurate answer than any other conventional approach. Also, concept-based approach has additional merits that it is language universal model, and can be combined with arbitrary conventional approaches.

  • Simultaneous confidence intervals for the parameters in the logistic regression models with random regressors are considered. A method based on the bootstrap and its stochastic approximation will be developed. A key idea in using the bootstrap method to construct simultaneous confidence intervals is the concept of prepivoting which uses the transformation of a root by its estimated cumulative distribution function. Repeated use of prepivoting makes the overall coverage probability asymptotically correct and the coverage probabilities of the individual confidence statement asymptotically equal. This method is compared with ordinary asymptotic methods based on Scheffe's and Bonferroni's through Monte Carlo simulation.

  • The Diesel Multiple Units (DMU) is a successful mass transportation system, that is being, continuously, on demand by train operators and railway authorities around the globe. One of its advantages is the fact that a diesel engine, along with the correct propulsion and control equipment. This paper describes a study on the Power Pack developed for Ireland DMU to help comprehensive concept of Diesel Propulsion System.

  • An efficient test method based on march test is presented to cover line leakage failures associated with bit and word lines or mega bit DRAM chips. A modified column march (Y-march) pattern is derived to improve fault coverage against the data retention failure. Time delay concept is introduced to develop a new column march test algorithm detecting various data retention failures. A built-in test circuit based on the column march pattern is designed and verified using logic simulation, confirming correct test operations.

  • In this paper, we provide a new proof to correct the asymptotic normality for the estimate $\hat{C}_{pmk}\;of\;C_{pmk}$, which is one of the well-known definitions of the process capability index. Also we comment briefly on the correction of the limiting distribution for $\hat{C}_{pmk}$ and on the use of re-sampling methods for the inference of $C_{pmk}$. Finally we discuss the concept of asymptotic unbiasedness.

  • One-dimensional radar signature, such as range profile, is highly dependent on the aspect angle. Therefore, radar target recognition over wide angular region is a very difficult task. In this paper, we propose the Bayes classifier with Gaussian mixture model for radar target recognition over wide-angular region and compare performances of proposed technique and radar target recognition with subclasses concept in the literature of probability of correct classification ratio.

  • A neural network structure able to perform the operations of analogue and binary addition is proposed. The network employs Hopfield' model of a neuron with the connection elements specified on the basis of an analysis of the energy function. Simulation using NMOS neurons has shown convergence predominantly to the correct global minima.
