  • A new yellow waxy corn hybrid "Daehakchal Gold 1" was developed from single cross between Yeongdeok Jaera and Okchen Jaera at Chungnam National University in 2007. Inbred CNU57 derived from Yeongdeok Jaera was used as the seed parent of Daehakchal Gold 1, and inbred CNU 27 derived from Okchen Jaera as the pollen parent. Tasseling date of this hybrid was seven day later than that of check hybrid, Chalok 1. Daehakchal Gold 1 was 19.7cm in ear length and 4.5cm in ear diameter. The yield of Daehakchal Gold 1 and check hybrid in dry matter were 146.5g and 113.9g per plant, respectively. On yield trial, which were increased 29.7% compared with a check hybrid, Chalok 1. Especially, Daehakchal Gold 1 had yellow kernels and good eating quality. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was similar to Chalok 1. It is moderately resistant to Bioporalis maydis and corn borer. The yields of Daehakchal Gold 1 in fresh ear weight and in number of fresh ear were 16% and 8%, respectively, higher than those of a check hybrid in regional yield trials for three years. Seed production of this hybrid has gone well due to good match during crossing between seed and pollen parents.

  • Hemp seed oil and evening primrose oil were incorporated into the diets of laying hens for 5 weeks and the level of gamma fatty acid in the eggs that the treated hens laid was then evaluated. Hens were fed corn-soybean based diets that contained 5% tallow, 5% corn oil (CO), 5% hemp seed oil (HSO), or 5% evening primrose oil (EPO). The hemp seed oil and evening primrose oil influenced the amount of gamma linolenic acid found in the eggs through blood. The level of gamma linolenic acid in the plasma was significantly higher in hens that received the HSO and EPO diets than in those that received the tallow and CO diets. The HSO and EPO diets led to a 1.09% and 4.87% increase in egg gamma linolenic acids, respectively, when compared with eggs produced by hens treated with tallow and CO. Taken together, these data demonstrate that healthy eggs with increased gamma linolenic acids can be generated by minor diet modifications when hemp seed oil or evening primrose oil is included in the hen diet.

  • The microstructures of top seed mult processde $\textrm{YBa}_2\textrm{Cu}_3\textrm{O}_7$.$\delta$ single crystal were studied. Although shape of the seed was not faceted. the growth shape of Y123 single crystal was faceted. It was observed that Y211 phases were trapped in specific spaces of the faceted region. From the microstructural investigation. it was suggested that the segregation of Y211 is due to the difference of growth rates in crystal direction. When a single crystal was grown by the single seed with stepped multi surfaces. a microstrue was grown from multi-seed. The microstructure show the possibility of multi-seed growth. Corn kernel like structure without Y211 phase was observed and seemed to be formed by the diffusion reaction between Y211 phase in crystal and liquid wetted on the crystal. the diagonal line on Y123 crystal was observed that it was formed by the corn kernel like structure.

  • The microstructure of Top Seed Milt-Processed $YBa_{2}$$Cu_{3}$$O_{7-\delta}$ single crystal was studied. It was presumed that the segregation of Y211 is due to the difference of growth rates between a, b axis and c axis in crystal direction. Corn kernel lide structure which was grown by the diffusion of Y211 was observed. At the near corner of the seed crystal, the diagonal line on Y123 cry crystal is formed by the corn kernel like structure.

  • Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), a member of the genus Tritimovirus in Potyviridae, severely impacts wheat and corn seed worldwide, but has yet to be detected in Korea, and hence, every effort should be made to prevent its introduction. To prevent WSMV from entering the country, it is necessary to prepare a specific, sensitive, simple, and fast detection method for routine application to plant quarantine procedures. For this reason, a two-step diagnosis system consisting of RT-PCR and nested PCR is being used for WSMV detection. In addition, a novel positive control was developed for use with the system. WSMV has been detected in seed sweet corn from Japan and seed wheat from USA by a two-step diagnosis system, the details of which are described in this study. After sequence analysis, similarities of 80.6 and 100.0% with other isolates were determined by BLAST. They showed the same topology, which was classified as 4 genotypes by various phylogenetic trees, using a poly protein encoding sequence amplification. In this analysis, WSMV-JSweet-corn2868 (JX845574) is classified as clade B, while WSMV-Uwheat1944-1 (KC754959) and WSMV-Uwheat1944-2 (KC754960) belong to clade D.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of supplements containing different energy sources in relation to mineral supplementation of steers grazing guineagrass (Panicum maximum cv Tanz$\hat{a}$nia) pasture, during the dry season. The experimental design was a randomized block with three treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of a mineral supplementation and two other supplements, one based on corn seed and the other based on soybean hulls, and provided at 0.8% of body weight. Forty-eight, 12 month-old crossbred steers with an average initial body weight of 267 kg, were assigned to twelve paddocks (1,125 ha) of guineagrass. The animals that were fed with soybean hulls and corn seed presented a greater average daily gain (0.982 and 0.937) when compared with the mineral supplementation. Soybean hulls can be used as a satisfactory food source, replacing corn as an energy source in the supplementation of beef cattle without compromising animal performance.

  • A new waxy corn hybrid 'Daedukchal 1' was developed from single cross between CNU 504 and CNU 2396 at Chungnam National University in 2007. Inbred CNU 504 used as a seed parent and inbred CNU 2396 as a pollen parent were collected throughout domestic regions. Tasseling date of this hybrid was seven days later than that of check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' was 19.7 cm in ear length and 4.5 cm in ear diameter. On yield trial, ear length of this hybrid was increased 29.7% compared with a check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' had white kernels and good eating quality due to high sugar content and thinner pericarp. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was similar to 'Chalok 1'. It is moderately resistant to southern leaf blight and northern leaf blight but susceptible to corn borer. The yields of 'Daedukchal 1' in fresh ear weight and in number of fresh ear were 16% and 8%, respectively, higher than those of a check hybrid in regional yield trials for two years. Seed production for this hybrid was better because of the consistency of tasseling dates.

  • This study was conducted to find out the optimum cultural method for hybrid seed production of Chalok 2. Higher seed yield was obtained when KW3 was used as a seed parent (female). KW7 was shown Higher barren stalk occurrence which caused significant seed yield reduction when it was used as a seed parent (female). The ratio of female (KW3) to male (KW7) rows with 4 to 1 had higher seed yield than that of 2:1 or 3:1. In case of using KW3 toy a seed parent, KW3 was susceptible to stem and ear rotting disease. The 35th day after silking was optimal period to harvest due to higher 100-grain weight, lower rotten grain, and higher germination rate.

  • This study was investigated quality characteristics of gluten-free noodles added guar gum and basil seed gum (BSG). Gluten-free noodles were prepared using corn flour and corn starch and added 1% and 2% of guar gum and basil seed gum. Water binding capacity was measured by centrifuge, and moisture content was obtained by moisture analyzer. Color of noodles was measured from the midsection of noodles. Water absorption of noodles was calculated by weight of uncooked and cooked noodles. pH of noodles was measured by pH meter. Texture and tensile strength were obtained by rheometer. SPSS 12.0 program was used for significant differences by Duncan's multiple range test. Water binding capacity of noodles was the highest in 2% basil seed gum but 1% guar gum was the lowest. Moisture content was not different in uncooked noodles, but 1% guar had the highest moisture content in cooked noodles. Water absorption of noodles was high in basil seed gum group. pH of noodles was more increased in guar gum additions than basil seed gum additions. For hardness, control had the lowest as 16.09 N, but 2% guar gum showed the highest as 28.40 N. Tensile strength of noodles was increased by adding gums. These results suggested that 1% basil seed gum could be good materials for manufacturing gluten-free noodles in order to improve quality characteristics.
