  • Canals with artificially made internal resorption were filled with 4 techniques(Lateral condensation, Ultrafil, Obtura II, Thermafil) to compare the efficacy of canal filling according to the filling techniques. After canal filling, radiographic examination, dye penetration through the apical portion and percentage of G-P filled area on the internal resorption area were evaluated. To examine the degree of crystal-like structure and the interface between filled G-P and canal wall, SM and SEM images were taken too. The results were as follows : 1. There was no statistically significant difference in apical microleakage among the 4 root canal filling techniques. 2. As a result of radiographic examination, Ultrafil was the best and Obtura II was acceptable but Lateral condensation and Thermafil showed unfavorable canal filling pattern similarly. 3. Ultrafil filled most of artificially made internal resorption area and Obtura II, Lateral condensation, Thermafil in that order filled unfavorably. 4. Degree of crystal like structure was the highest in the group filled with Ultrafil and those of Obtura II and Thermafil were similar and that of gutta percha used in Lateral condensation showed the lowest value. 5. Penetration of gutta percha into the dentinal tubules couldn't be seen in all groups. In the contact surface between the filled G-P and the canal wall, Lateral condensation showed relatively close sealing, Obtura II and Thermafil had irregular contact surface and Ultrafil showed regular filling pattern. 6. Contact surface between the core of Thermafil and the gutta percha showed close relationship without gap formation.

  • The cluster project in Korea has restructured to develop the cluster into a core engine for the pan-regional development policy and connect industrial parks across the country. Korean government has made great efforts to attract research institutes, support organizations and universities in industrial parks and enhance growth potential through a close cooperation network. Especially A mini-cluster is an integrated group joined by companies, universities and research institutes and support organizations. It has been developing business opportunities through industry-academia-research cooperation and providing assistance through network activities. Mini clusters have implemented a variety of network activities. This paper proposed three strategies to accomplish self-sustainable growth of mini-clusters. First of all, mini-cluster needs to provide useful contents that can attract the participation of members. Then it is necessary to promote mini-cluster initiative. Finally, mini-clusters need to make up a cooperative culture.

  • Eccentric axial loading test was performed for concrete-encased columns using 800MPa steel and 100MPa concrete. To maximize the contribution of the high-strength steel, L-shaped steel sections were placed at four corners, and connected to each other by lattices, links, or battens. Compared to a H-section of the same area, the moment-arm and strain of the L-sections are increased. Also, the corner L-sections provide good lateral confinement to concrete core. The test results showed that the peak strength and effective flexural stiffness of the L-section columns were increased by more than 1.4 times those of the H-section column.

  • Objective : This study was conducted to evaluate the changes in the levels of neurotransmitters and cortisol in patients with chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to evaluate their correlation with symptoms after long-term pharmacological treatment. Methods : Twenty-eight Vietnam veterans with chronic PTSD and 34 non-PTSD patients were consecutively recruited. The Combat Exposure Scale (CES), Mississippi Scale for Combat-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (M-PTSD), Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS), Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAS) were used to evaluate symptom severity. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to measure the plasma levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine, and a radioimmunoassay (RIA) was performed to evaluate the plasma level of cortisol. Results : Plasma cortisol was significantly lower in PTSD patients than in control subjects, while there was no significant difference in plasma epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine between the two groups. The scores of M-PTSD, CAPS, HAMD and HAMA were signigicantly higher in PTSD patients than control group. Conclusion : After long-term treatment, the levels of neurotransmitters in PTSD patients returned to within the normal range, and the patients' symptoms showed some improvement. However, the core symptoms of PTSD continued to appear intermittently, and they are thought to be associated with hormonal systems, such as the HPA axis. It is also suggested that PTSD should be considered to be a complex disorder associated with multiple systems and that combinations of the effective medications for each system should be used to treat patients with PTSD.

  • $[Fe^{II}Fe^{III}BPLMP(OAc)_2](BPh_4)_2$ (1), a new model for the reduced form of the purple acid phosphatases, has been synthesized by using a dinucleating ligand, 2,6-bis[((2-pyridylmethyl)(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethyl)amino) methyl]-4-methylphenol (HBPLMP). Complex I has been characterized by X-ray diffraction method as having (μ-phenoxo)bis(acetato)diiron core. Complex 1 was crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/c with the following cell parameters: a=41.620(6) Å, b=14.020(3) Å, c=27.007(4) Å, β=90.60(2)°, and Z=8. The iron centers in the complex 1 are ordered as indicated by the difference in the Fe-O bond lengths which match well with typical $Fe^{III}-O\; and\; Fe^{II}-O$ bond lengths. Complex 1 has been studied by electronic spectral, NMR, EPR, SQUID, and electochemical methods. Complex 1 exhibits strong bands at 592 nm, 1380 nm in $CH_3CN$ (ε = 1.0 × 103 , 3.0 × 102). These are assigned to $phenolate-to-Fe^{III}$ and intervalence charge-transfer transitions, respectively. Its NMR spectrum exhibits sharp isotropically shifted resonances, which number half of those expected for a valence-trapped species, indicating that electron transfer between $Fe^{II}\;and\;Fe^{III}$ centers is faster than NMR time scale. This complex undergoes quasireversible one-electron redox processes. The $Fe^{III}_2/Fe^{II}Fe^{III}\;and\;Fe^{II}Fe^{III}/Fe^{II}_2$ redox couples are at 0.655 and -0.085 V vs SCE, respectively. It has $K_{comp}=3.3{\times}10^{12}$ representing that BPLMP/bis(acetate) ligand combination stabilizes a mixed-valence $Fe^{II}Fe^{III}$ complex in the air. Complex 1 exhibits a broad EPR signal centered near g=1.55 which is a characteristic feature of the antiferromagnetically coupled high-spin $Fe^{II}Fe^{III}$ system $(S_{total}=1/2)$. This is consistent with the magnetic susceptibility study showing the weak antiferromagnetic coupling $(J= - 4.6\;cm^{-1},\; H= - 2JS_1{\cdot}S2)$ between $Fe^{II}\; and \;Fe^{III}$center.

  • Call centers do not simply play a role of responding to customers' calls, but they have developed into a core unit for maintaining competitiveness through services, marketing, or sales. Since the service quality of call centers heavily affects customer satisfaction, organizations have focused on enhancing it by reducing waiting time and increasing service level. One of the techniques, which improve the service quality of call centers, is to employ multi-skilled agents that can handle more than one type of calls. This study deals with three issues relevant to multi-skilled agents. First, we analyze how the way of allocating a specific group of agents to a set of skills affects the performance of call centers. Secondly, we investigate the relationship between the number of multi-skilled agents and the performance of call centers. Finally, we examine the impact of agent selection rules on the performance of call centers. Two selection rules are compared : the first rule is to assign a call to any available agent at random while the other rule is to assign a call preferably to single-skilled agents over multi-skilled agents when applicable. Based on simulation experiments, we suggest three implications. First, as the length of cycles in the agent-skill configuration network becomes longer, call centers achieve higher service level and shorter waiting time. Secondly, simulation results show that as the portion of multi-skilled agents increases, the performance of call centers improves. However, most of the improvement is attained when the portion of multi-skilled agents is relatively low. Finally, the agent selection rules do not significantly affect the call centers' performance, but the rule of preferring single-skilled agents tends to distribute the workload among agents more equally.

  • The Xylariaceae Tul. & C. Tul is a family of sphaeriaceous genera with obscure but apparently common ancestry (Rogers, 1979). A central core of genera - Xylaria, Hypoxylon, Rosellinia, Poronia, Podosordaria, Hypocopra, Daldinia, Biscogniauxia, Kretzschmaria, Camillea, Penzigia - are obviously related, regardless of the fact that the generic limits are arguable (Rogers, 1979; Barr, 1990; Eriksson & Hawksworth, 1991; Laessoe, 1994). In general, the family Xylariaceae is primarily defined as a group of stromatic pyrenomycetes with unitunicate asci characterized by a typical apical apparatus and pigmented ascospores having a germ slit (Rogers, 1979). Since Winter (1887) circumscribed the family to include Pyrenomycetes with predominately a dark stroma, dark unveiled spores containing 5 geners: Nummularia Tul, & C. Tul., Hypoxylon Bull., ustulina Tul. & C.Tul., Poronia Willd. and XylariaHill ex Schrank, many more genera has been added to the family (Dennis, 1961; Eriksson & Hawksworth, 1993; Whalley, 1996). In the absence of the clear circumscription of the family (Rogers, 1994) the agreed number of accepted genera is governed by individual views and there are therefore difference between the proposals for the ascomycetes recognized 35 genera and indicated a further 3 which might belong there. Laessore reviewed the family and included 37 genera but a few of these were listed as uncertain (Laessoe, 1994). In the most recent accounts Whalley (1996) listed 41 genera but again a number of these were considered uncertain and Ju and Rogers (1996) accepted 39 genera in their interpretation of the family. Since Laessoe (1994) merged Daldinia and Versiomyces with Hypoxylonand Ju and Rogers (1996) combined Astrocystis with Resellinia and Helicogermslita, which can be argued strongly against, it is likely that a realistic number of genera will be close to 40(Whalley, 1996; table 1).

  • This study is an analysis of the life of Max Planck (1858-1947), the in view of engineering literacy education. Some expressions describing Planck include "the father of German science", "the namer of Quantum". Furthermore, he is the scientist who permanently engraved his name in a scientific invariant called the Planck Constant. Planck had already made remarkable scientific achievements in his mid-ages, which became the springboard of quantum mechanics, but he went on to achieve much more in his old age. Between 1910s and 1930s, he was the director of the Kaiser-Wilhelm Gesellschaft, the Berlin Academy, and the German Physics Society, which is the German core research group. In the 1910s, he endured the terrible personal suffering of losing his three children and then succeeded in rebuilding German science in the 1920s in his golden age of 70s. His achievement was great not only as a scientist but also as a science administrator. His life was contradictory in several ways. While fundamentally being a conservative, he initiated a great scientific revolution. While making efforts to preserve traditional values, he was in the center of great many upheavals and destruction. While being the incarnation of honesty, he was also given to extremely delicate political positions. In his long career, Planck lived with all his might as a leader of the German science organizations and permanently left his name on the institute representing Germany. Planck succeeded in his work for the institutional development of science, philosophical understanding of science, and as a role model of exemplary scientist. His long life was accompanied by both achievements and failures, intangible and difficult to judge. Today, as research and development management and scientific leadership have become increasingly important, Planck's life may be a good example of engineering literacy education.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of student-generated questions (SGQs) partially applied in a pathology course on learning motivation, communication abilities, and problem-solving skills in nursing students. A one-group pretest-posttest design was employed to conduct this study with 106 nursing students taking the pathology course in a university-setting. Data were analyzed using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test in SPSS version 20. The results showed that communication and problem-solving skills were significantly improved at the end of the semester compared to the beginning. The findings imply that SGQs could be an effective means to improve nursing students' skills of communication and problem solving. To equip nursing students with such core competencies, teaching-learning methods combined various strategies should be developed and applied to nursing education.
