졸-겔법에 의한 코디어라이트 제조와 분석에 관한 연구 (A study on the preparation and analysis of cordierite by sol-gel method)

  • 졸-겔법에 의한 코디어라이트계 전구체(precursor) 제조 시 마그네슘 에톡사이드를 사용하면 황금색을 띠는 불투명한 전구체 용액이 되고, 조핵제인 5%-$Zr(OC_3H_7)_4$ 첨가 시에는 투명한 코디어라이트를 얻을 수 있다. 적외선 흡수 분광 분석에서 $SiO_2$ 성분은 $1045cm^{-1}$에서 흡수 피크를 확인 할 수 있었으며, 동시에 $1140cm^{-1}$$940cm^{-1}$의 두 개 피크 분리는 열처리 한 겔체인 $SiO_4$ 신축 진동이고, $Al_2O_3$ 성분은 $580cm^{-1}$$680cm^{-1}$의 흡수 피크로 보아 $Al_2O_6$ 망목 구조이고, MgO 성분은 $575cm^{-1}$에서 MgO 신축 진동 임을 알 수 있었다. X-선 회절 분석에서 코디어라이트계 전구체 : 물 몰비 1:5의 경우 반응 소결 온도 $1000^{\circ}C$ 이상에서는 ${\mu}$-cordierite 결정상이 나타남을 알 수 있었고, 코디어라이트계 전구체 : 암모니아 몰비 1:5 건조 겔체의 경우 $1050^{\circ}C$에서는 ${\mu}$-cordierite와 ${\alpha}$-cordierite가 공존 하다가 $1100^{\circ}C$에서는 ${\alpha}$-cordierite만이 존재함을 알 수 있었다.

  • Cordierite/ZrO$_2$ composites with 5 to 25wt% ZrO$_2$ were fabricated by prssureless sintering, and their densification behavior, fracture strength, fracture toughness, microstructure and thermal expansion behavior were studied. The ZrO$_2$ addition into cordierite matrix affects the densification behavior and mechanical properties of the composites. By dispersing 25wt% ZrO$_2$, densified cordierite/ZrO$_2$ composite with a relative density of 98.5% was obtained at optimum sintering condition of 144$0^{\circ}C$/2H. Both fracture strength and toughness were increased from 140 to 290MPa and from 1.6 to 3.5 MPam$\frac{1}{2}$, respectively, by dispersing 25wt% ZrO$_2$ into the cordierite matrix. ZrO$_2$ particles were homogenously dispersed into cordierite matrix, which intragranular particles were fine(<100nm) and intergranular particles were coarse. The toughening mechanisms in the present composites were mainly attributed to martensitic transformation toughening. Then, the addition of ZrO$_2$ is likely to have little deleterious effect upon thermal expansion coefficient of cordierite.

Cordierite/Glass Composite계 LTCC 소재의 소결 및 유전특성 (Sintering and Dielectric Properties in Cordierite/Glass Composite for LTCC Application)

  • Recently, there has been growing interest in low loss and low dielectric constant material for LTCC application, as the frequency range for electronic devices increases. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of cordierite filler for low dielectric constant LTCC material. From the previous experiments, two glass compositions of B-Si-Al-Zn-Ba-Ca-O and B-Si-Al-Sr-Ca-O system, were chosen. Each powder of two glass compositions was sintered respectively with commercial cordierite powder in temperature range from $800^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$. Crystalline cordierite and glass peaks were affected only with two factors of composition and sintering temperature among various factors. With the optimized condition of two cordierite/glass compositions, obtained dielectric constant was below 5.5 and quality factor was above 1,000. Closed pore of sintered body was controled by sintering temperature and sintering time. When cordierite/glass composite with ratio of 5.5:4.5 was sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, densification was sufficient with good dielectric characteristics of ${\epsilon}_r<5.1,\;Q{\ge}1,000$. Residual fine closed pores could be reduced with control of sintering temperature and time. 3 point bending strength and chemical durability were evaluated to obtain feasibility for substrate material.

  • Cordierite ceramic was prepared by sol-gel method. It was analyzed by Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction patterns that the ceramic was chemically mixed in molecular level and transformed to $\alpha$-cordierite at 125$0^{\circ}C$. Water vapour treatments for aging and drying process were conducted to get porous cordierite with thermally stable pore structure. It resulted in 220-410 $m^2$/g BET surface area and mesoporous structure with mean pore diameter, 40$\AA$. Compared to naturally dried ceramic, the ceramic showed superior thermal stability of surface area up to $700^{\circ}C$. Surfaces of porous cordierite ceramics were observed by SEM.

  • The cordierite (MgO, SiO2, Al2O3) is of great interest for microelectronic packaging of integrated circuits. Its main advantages are low dielectric constant and low thermal expansion. The cordierite precursor is obtained by sol-gel synthesis using organic and inorganic compounds. The obtained cordierite precursor is an amorphous state at about 900\ulcorner. Green and fired cordierite samples were studied by SEM. Microanalysis X and TEM for microscopic properties. The fired cordierite shows forte diminution of Mg in comparison with its value at volume and the deficit of Mg compensates by sugmentation of Al and Si \ulcornercordierite and \ulcornercordierite are present near the surface (< 100) and small quantities of magnesium aluminate (MgAl2O4)is presented spinnel phase.

  • In this study, we attempt to synthesize the cordierite from the reaction of fly-ash, alumina, silicon dioxide, and magnesia powders. For the purpose of air purification, the honeycomb filter with porous cordierite was fabricated from the combination of synthetic cordierite and pore forming agent. Fabricated porous cordierite honeycomb was prepared with high porosity (58%), and good compressive strength (69MPa).

  • Korean clinochlore, kaolin, pyrophillite and a technical grade of alumina have been used to investigate the effects of Al2O3 on the formation and properties of cordierite bodies. The body compositions were formulated from the proper proportions of the above raw materials to cover the range of composition from the point corresponding to the stoichiometric formula of cordierite, bythe consecutive increasment of 0.2mol. Al2O3, toward the apex of Al2O3 on the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 triaxial diagram. Each of bodies was fired with the elevated temperatures from 110$0^{\circ}C$ to 140$0^{\circ}C$ by 5$0^{\circ}C$ interval. Linear shrinkage and water absorption were taken as measures for the firing range of the bodies. The formation of cordierite was estimated from the comparative study of X-ray diffraction and dilatometry of the fired bodies. The formation of a large amount of cordierite was initiated about 120$0^{\circ}C$. The content of Al2O3 exceeded up to 0.8 mol. comparing to the stoichiometric formula of cordierite broadens the firing range of the body.

Waste to shield: Tailoring cordierite/mullite/zircon composites for radiation protection through controlled sintering and Y2O3 addition

  • In this study, investment casting shell waste successfully utilized to produce cordierite/mullite/zircon composites. Green pellets, consisting of investment casting shell waste, alumina, and magnesia, were prepared and sintered at temperatures between 1250 and 1350 ℃. The influence of the sintering temperature on the crystalline phase composition, densification behavior, flexural strength, microstructure, and radiation shielding properties of the cordierite/mullite/zircon composites is investigated. Phase analysis showed that characteristic cordierite peaks appear at 1250 ℃, but the complete conversation of silica from investment casting shell waste into cordierite requires a sintering temperature of at least 1300 ℃. Notably, the cordierite/mullite/zircon composite sintered at 1350 ℃ exhibited a sixfold increase in flexural strength compared to the ceramic composite directly fabricated from investment casting shell waste at the same sintering temperature. Furthermore, the effect of Y2O3 addition on composites' radiation shielding properties is investigated. The results show that the Y2O3 addition improves densification behavior, enhancing the shielding capabilities of the composites against fast neutron and gamma radiation. Our findings suggest that the developed ceramic composites show significant potential for gamma-ray and neutron shielding applications.

Cordierite의 합성 및 내화갑제조에 관한 연구 (Synthesis of Cordierite and Preparation of Refractory Setter from Domestic Raw Materials)

  • In order to obtain the superior refractory setter having better spalling resistance, cordierite was synthesized from domestic raw materials. Raw mixtures were fired between 125$0^{\circ}C$ and 140$0^{\circ}C$, and qualitative determination of crytallization was investigated by x-ray diffraction analysis. The results obtained are as follows; 1) The optimum batch composition of synthesized cordierite is 80.5% of Hadong kaolin (pink), 14% of Kyulsung tromolite talc and 5.5% of magnesia clinker, and the firing temperature is 1375$^{\circ}C$. 2) The composition of the refractory setter which exhibits the best values for the thermal properties is 40% of synthesized cordierite, 30% of kaolin chamotte(contains more than 60% of mullite), and 30% of Japanese clay. 3) The optimum particle size distribution of ternary mixture consists of 50% of coarse articles (3.327-1.168mm), 25% of intermediate particles (1.168-0.208mm) and 25% of fine particles (0.208-0.000mm).
