  • In this paper, we propose that three uniform coplanar waveguides(CPWs), such as a conventional, finite grounded(FG), and grounded(G) CPWs, can be coupled with a $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode dielectric resonator(DR) for a parallel resonant characteristic as a microstrip line coupled with the DR. Coupling characteristics have been investigated by placing the DR on a dielectric support above the CPWs and by moving the DR away from the center of a slot of the CPWs to the ground plane. FEM simulation(HFSS) results in terms of S-parameters agree well with measurement results. Finally, unloaded Q values of the DR coupled with the three uniform CPWs are compared with those of the DR coupled with a microstrip line. The comparison shows that the DR coupled with the three CPWs has higher unloaded Qs than that coupled with a microstrip line and that the GCPW case has the highest unloaded Qs.

  • This study investigated a new tuneable bandpass filter based on coplanar waveguide coupled line structure, and using the varactor diode for tuning the center frequency of the filter. The filter was designed by a commercial simulator and had a tuning range of 180[MHz] from 0.95[GHz] to 1.13[GHz]. The filter acceptable values regarding the insertion loss was less than 3[dB] and its return loss greater than 12[dB]. The figure of merit of the implemented tuneable filter increased with the reverse bias voltage up to 14[V] on the varactor diode. The proposed filter has a promising future as it can be used in integration processes and in various materials as substrate.

  • We use conformal mapping method to derive the analytical expressions for calculating electrostatic fields and electric potentials surrounding the conductor-backed coupled coplanar waveguide(CBCCPW) structure. Using the derived expressions, the electrostatic fields and potentials are computed at various points of the CBCCPW's geometry and the field and potential distributions are analyzed. The proposed method provides a faster and simpler calculation of the field distributions than the full-wave analysis method because no iterations are required. This method can be widely applied to the analysis of microwave integrated circuits using coupled line, such as coupler, filter, and microstrip antenna.

  • A miniaturized CMOS bandpass filter for a single RF transceiver system is presented, using diagonally end-shorted coupled lines and lumped capacitors. In contrast to conventional miniaturized coupled line filters, it is proven that the effective permittivity variation of the coupled transmission line has no effect on shifting the center frequency when the bandpass filter is highly miniaturized. A bandpass filter at a center frequency of 2 GHz was fabricated by $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The insertion loss with the die area of $1500{\mu}m{\times}1000{\mu}m$ is -5.14 dB. Simulated results are well agreed with the easurements. It also verify the center frequency stability in the compact size bandpass filter.

  • This paper presents a method for analyzing and designing an extremely miniaturized planar ring hybrid, using the combination of parallel and diagonally shorted coupled lines. In contrast to conventional miniaturized coupled line filters, it is proven that the required electrical length of transmission line can be largely reduced to even a few degrees, not only effectively suppressing the spurious passband but also approximately maintaining the same characteristic around the stable center frequency. A ring hybrid filter at center frequency of 1 GHz was fabricated on the FR4 epoxy glass cloth copper-clad plat (CCL) PCB substrate. The insertion loss of a ring hybrid filter with the die area of $30mm{\times}30mm$ is -4.68 dB. Simulated results are well agreed with the measurements.

  • We design and fabricate 3-dB tandem directional coupler using the coplanar waveguide structure which is applicable to balanced amplifiers and mixers for 60 GHz wireless local area network system. The coupler comprises the multiple-sectional parallel-coupled lines to facilitate the fabrication process, and enable smaller device size and higher directivity than those of the conventional 3-dB coupler employing the edge-coupled line. In this study, we adopt the structure of two-sectional parallel-coupled lines of which each single-coupled line has a coupling coefficient of -8.34 dB and airbridge structure to monolithically materialize the uniplanar coupler structure instead of using the conventional multilayer or bonded structure. The airbridge structure also supports to minimize the parasitic components and maintain desirable device performance in V-band (50$\~$75 GHz). The measured results from the fabricated couplers show couplings of 3.S$\~$4 dB and phase differences of 87.5$^{\circ}{\pm}1^{\circ}$ in V-band range and show directivities higher than 30 dB at a frequency of 60 GHz.

  • In this paper, the use of a dual composite right/left-handed coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line is proposed for the design of a band rejection filter. The notch property of the filter is achieved by combining the convex signal line with the shorted concave meander line, and the equivalent circuit model is extracted from the geometry of the unit cell for organizing the band rejection property. Then the equivalent parameters of the unit cell are analyzed to identify those behaviors. And the dispersion characteristics and energy distributions are simulated. In the end, the band rejection filter is manufactured by cascading two proposed unit cells. We show that the measurement result for the resonant frequency demonstrates good agreement with the simulation result and the band rejection filter provides a rejection performance of 17.5 dB at the stopband frequency ranging from 869 MHz to 894 MHz.

  • In this paper, a miniaturized directional coupler utilizing lumped element is proposed as a interdigital capacitor. The traditional miniaturization technique of transmission line realized a utilizing MIM(Metal-Insulator-Metal) capacitor on CPW(Coplanar Waveguide). However, we present a simplified design procedure without additional manufacturing process utilizing interdigital capacitor on microstrip with ease of design. The similar characteristics between the conventional directional coupler with ${\lambda}/4$ transmission line and the miniaturized directional coupler with ${\lambda}/8$ transmission line are validated through simulation and measurement results. Miniaturization rate of total size is about 25% while coupled line is about 60%. As a result, this proposed directional coupler can reduce the size of mobile communication system at 2 GHz.

  • In this paper, a new marchand balun using broadside-coupled coplanar waveguide(CPW) on flexible printed circuit (FPC) is proposed. The proposed balun is designed based on the coupled line theory. The fabricated balun shows compact size and improved performance compared to the conventional microstrip line marchand balun. Measured amplitude and phase imbalance between the two balanced output ports are within 0.2 dB and $1^{\circ}$ respectively in a wide frequency range($1.63{\sim}3.44$ GHz). The proposed balun is expected to be used between various antennas and RF front-ends as a functional interconnection.

  • This paper proposes the planar-type modified monopole antennas of loop structure. This antenna has an opened center of a conventional closed loop structure with an inside-folded terminal of the loop microstrip line. The size of the proposed antenna was minimized by folding the end of the loop. Also, the reactance value has been minimized by increasing capacitances between the coupled microstrip line. Therefore the proposed antenna has been compacted to about 20% from a conventional loop antenna and has increased its efficiency. The proposed antennas have an omni-directional pattern, the antenna gain was 3.67 [dBi] and the bandwidth was 900 MHz (2.6~3.56 GHz) with VSWR$\leq$2 from the simulated and the measured results. The frequency utilization coefficient was 29.9%. These properties could satisfy the S-DMB band.
