  • Background: The aim of this study was to analyze outpatient anesthesia for dental treatment in handicapped patients with behavior disorder in order to use data for carrying out better and safe anesthetic management. Methods: The data were drawn from the 100 patients with behavior disorder who visited CNUDH dental clinic for disabled based on anesthesia record to investigate patient's systemic condition, cooperative level, anesthesia method according to patients cooperation, and side effects after recovery time. Results: Mental retardation (58%) is the most reason to choose general anesthesia. The methods of induction according to cooperative level are intravenous propofol injection in 22 cases and inhalation of sevoflurane in 78 cases. Induction time of anesthesia were within 10 seconds in cases of propofol induction and average $48.8{\pm}18.5$ seconds in cases of inhalation induction. The time spent on dental treatment was average $3.2{\pm}1.1$ hours. After the end of treatment, average time to move from unit chair to recovery bed, to recliner, and to discharge from hospital are $10.4{\pm}5.1$, $36.9{\pm}17.1$ and $72.4{\pm}16.0$ minutes, respectively. During recovery, there are nausea with 9%, vomiting with 4%, dizziness with 2%, finger injury with 1%. Conclusions: This study showed our successful anesthetic outcomes without any severe side effects or complications. Through this study, it will be used for safe anesthetic management as useful reference data.

  • Many patients with mental retardation need extensive dental treatment because they have much difficulty in maintaining their oral hygiene. However, because they are not cooperative and not manageable, they require physical restraints, drug induced sedation or general anesthesia. General anesthesia is useful in control of the patients who cannot be treated in other ways. Additionally, general anesthesia provides more safe environment for medically compromised patients. And medical treatment can be provided simultaneously under general anesthesia. Furthermore, almost all treatment can be provided without visiting several times. This case reports of periodontal, restorative and ophthalmological treatment of patient with mental retardation under general anesthesia.

  • This article discusses how to conduct treatment planning and decision making in special needs dentistry. Special needs patients often lack cooperative ability during dental treatment and have a deteriorated oral health status. To overcome the limitation in communication with special needs patients and solve their complicated dental problems, dentists need to have extensive preoperative information about the patients and their caregivers. Treatment procedures should be organized in a patient-centered and cost-effective manner. Additionally, clinical outcomes need to be predicted taking into consideration of the patients' condition. The clinical experience of committed dentists is another factor that enhances the benefits of extensive treatment in special needs patients with many limitations. The insightful treatment decision-making of dentists will contribute to improving the oral health of special needs patients despite the various obstacles.

  • This study attempted to determine the effects of a cooperative and cognitive group therapy compared to individual therapy in 24 aphasic subjects. Two dependent variables were measured overall language performance, functional communication skills. 18 subjects with different types and severity of aphasia participated in the group therapy. 6 aphasic subjects participated in the individual therapy and they functioned as a control group. The subjects were ranged from 27 to 59 years in age. The group therapy using the cooperative learning utilized the following procedures. First, 6 aphasics constituted 1 group where each subject peformed a task and they monitored one another. Second, 2 aphasics consisted 1 group and they cooperated to perform a task. Third, 3 groups with 2 aphasics in a group competed one another in a task where the 2 aphasics had to cooperated. Finally, the investigator gave the feedback to the group and she and the subjects discussed the overall procedures of the therapy. The above mentioned 2 tests were administered pre- and post-treatment. A repeated two-way ANOVA was performed for analysis. The results showed that the group therapy was more effective in improving overall language performance as compared to the individual therapy. And, the group therapy was more effective in increasing functional communication skills as compared to the individual therapy.

  • Since 2010, in general hospital, they can install western medical post, traditional Korean medical post, and dental post. So the environment is made for the Cooperative medical system between traditional Korean medicine(TKM) and western medicine(WM) to be performed. So we found out about how doctors think about TKM and what is needed for TKM & WM cooperative system to work well. When we found out about how recognition changed about TKM during their medical school years and after they became doctors, positive answer increased from 25.6% to 30%, negative answer decreased from 41.9% to 32.0%, severely negative increased from 9.3% to 16%. They changed to positive about TKM after they became doctors. But severely negative also increased. The element they lose faith in TKM is their doubt about the scientific aspects of TKM. On the other hand, severely negative recognition was also raised. 73.8% of respondents thought the most effective treatment of TKM was for myalgia. 33.3% of them answered the chance to encounter TKM was the mass media, indicating its limitation. 60.5% of them considered major reason for negative evaluation of TKM is its non-scientific aspects and only 30.9% said TKM treatment could be recommended to patients at the hospital. Doctors in WM for recognition on TKM is mostly negative and major reason is its non-scientific aspects. As the solution to this problem, scientification of TKM is suggested through research projects. These connections must be resolved to smoothly work interdisciplinary system of TKM and WM.

  • This study constructed an experiment group and a comparative group, composed of high school students preparing for "Na" type math exam and provided one-to-many tutoring cooperative learning. This study tested the differences between group and between pre- and post-treatment scores by group using non-parametric statistics techniques. Moreover, this study conducted an open-type survey twice and had individual interviews to examine the affective domains of students. The difference in scores between the experimental group and the comparative group was not significant. However, the difference between pre- and post-treatment math scores was only significant in the experiment group among the three groups. Additionally, the student-teacher could reflect on him or her and improve self-efficacy while teaching other ordinary students. The ordinary students were more interested and motivated in the lessons and became more confident. In terms of mathematics competency, we could see that communication, problem-solving, reasoning, and attitude & practice were improved.

  • In this study, the effect of cooperative computer-assisted instruction upon students' conceptual under-standing,application ability, and learning motivation were investigated by a previous achievement level. The treatment and the control groups (2 classes) were selected from a middle school in Seoul, and taught about the motion of molecule for 5 class periods. Prior to the instructions, a learning motivation test was administered and used as covariate. The scores of a previous achievement test were also used as covariate. The scores of the mid-term science examination were used as blocking variable. After the instructions, the conceptions test, the application test, and the learning motivation test were administered. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that there were no significant differences in the scores of the con-ceptions test and the application test. However, the scores of the treatment group were found to be significantly higher than those of the control group in the learning motivation test.

  • In this study, the effects of grouping by communication apprehension level in cooperative learning strategy applied to general science class and the difference between high and low communication apprehension levels were investigated. Three classes (N=112) were randomly assigned to two cooperative and one traditional learning groups. Students in two cooperative learning classes were grouped into homogeneous and heterogeneous groups with respect to their communication apprehension levels based on the test score of students' communication apprehension. After the instructions concerning the matter for 11 class hours, achievement, self-esteem, motivation to learn science. and student's perception to lack about communication ability and expectation about receiving help in cooperative learning processes were examined. Two-way ANOVA results revealed that there were no main and interactive effects in the scores of the achievement test. However, significant main effect of the treatment was found in the scores of the relevance and the satisfaction among four motivation sub-categories. In post-hoc comparison, the scores of the heterogeneous group were found to be significantly higher than those of the control group. For expectation about receiving help in cooperative learning processes, the scores of the heterogeneous group were significantly higher than those of the homogeneous group. Students in high communication apprehension level had significantly lower self-esteem and more perception to lack about communication ability than students in low level.
