In this paper, multiple offshore wave energy converters with different output characteristics are connected to one power distribution substation. The connection between the power take-off of the different wave energy converters and the electrical power transmission system is presented in order to investigate whether multiple wave energy converters can augment energy yield and improve network integration capabilities. Moreover, the model of an array of wave energy converters is developed with the goal of analyzing the effects of the offshore wave farm on the electrical network to which it is connected. It is also developed to ensure that the electricity generated by the array is sufficiently controllable, and of a quality that can be integrate into the electricity supply network without unduly increasing the cost of connection, production or delivery.

In case of operating two converters in parallel with ZCT operation method using one current sensor for fault tolerance by system characteristics, identifying fault detection and isolation is difficult of which converter is fault since the ZCT output is a difference of two converters' supply current when a converter has fault. This thesis suggest a fault detection and isolation method of converter in case of operating two converters in parallel for fault tolerant system and verified this suggested method through an experiment.

A new auxiliary circuit for boost, buck, buck-boost, Cuk, SEPIC, and zeta converters is introduced to provide soft switching for pulse-width modulation converters. In the aforementioned family of DC-DC converters, the main and auxiliary switches turn on under zero current transition (ZCT) and turn off with zero voltage and current transition (ZVZCT). All diodes commutate under soft switching conditions. On the basis of the proposed converter family, the boost topology is analyzed, and its operating modes are presented. The validity of the theoretical analysis is justified by the experimental results of a 100W, 100 kHz prototype. The conducted electromagnetic emissions of the proposed boost converter are measured and found to be lower than those of another ZCT boost converter.
In DC-DC Buck converters with average current mode control, the current loop compensator provides additional design freedom to enhance the converter current loop performance. On the other hand, the current loop circuit elements append substantial amount of complexity to not only the inner current loop but also the outer voltage loop, which makes it demanding to quantify circuit and operating parameter effects on the small-signal dynamics of such converters. Despite the difficulty, it is shown in this paper that parameter effects can be analyzed satisfactorily by using an existing small-signal model in conjunction with a newly proposed simplified alternative. As a result of the study, new insight into average current mode control is uncovered and discussed quantitatively. Measurable experimental results on a prototype averaged-current-mode-controlled Buck converter are provided to facilitate the analytical study with good correlation.

All-optical signal processing is expected to offer advantages in speed and power consumption against over electronics signal processing. It has a potential to solve the bottleneck issues of ultra-high speed communication network nodes. All-optical serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial data converters would make it possible to easily process the serial data information of a high-speed optical packet without optical-to-electronic-to-optical data conversion. In this paper, we explain the principle of simple and easily expandable all-optical serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial data converters based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers. We experimentally demonstrate these data converters at 10Gbit/s serial data rate. They are useful all-optical devices for the all-optical implementations of label decoding, self-routing, control of variable packets, bit-wise logical operation, and data format conversion.
Quantum converters, a subset of resonant converters operating with optimal conditions are modeled. It is shown that series resonant converter(SRC) can be modeled as buck/boost converter with an equivalent inductor and parallel resonant converter(PRC) can be modeled as Cuk converter, with an equivalent capacitor. Also new resonant circuits with boost, buck-boost and Cuk converter characteristics are proposed. From these models, the quantum converters can be designed to be controlled with closed loop feedback, having many advantages such as low device switching stress, reliable high frequency operation and low EMI.

DC microgrid system composed of multiple converters has a tendency to make the system unstable due to the interaction of converters. To solve this problem, in this paper, the interaction between cascaded converters with LC input filter is analyzed with impedance modeling using g-parameter. The input impedance and the output impedance of the system can be obtained through this technique. The stability of the system can be determined by applying Middlebrook's stability criterion to the impedance. Virtual impedance is added to the controller to enhance stability. The validity of the analysis is verified by the result of several simulations and experiments.

This paper presents a new AC/DC converter scheme for HVDC system to achieve a high power factor operation. The new AC/DC converter consists of two 12-pulse bridge converters in series: the primary and auxiliary converters. Ignition angles of the main and auxiliary converters are controlled independently to maintain the nominal DC voltage and control auxiliary voltage. The resulted DC voltage obtained by superimposing the above two phase modulated voltages can be controlled very rapidly over a wide range, and a high power factor operation is achieved. Performance improvements in power factor and harmonic distortion are validated by theoretic derivations and experiments with prototype HVDC system. With the proposed converters, investment for reactive power compensation and filter in HVDC system can be saved significantly.
The commutation and control in matrix converters is more complicated as in voltage source converters. Natural freewheeling paths do not exist and the theoretic absent storage elements result in a direct coupled system of load and line currents as well as voltages. The paper offers an overview about staggered commutation and control policies in matrix converters. Based on the knowledge about load current direction and the signs of the line to line input voltages different multi-step commutation policies were derived. This paper examines the application of that policies in the case of space vector modulation and direct control methods with the focus on the resulting effects to the reference output voltage deviation.
This paper presents a comparative evaluation of various topologies for three-phase power converters using the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation technique. Various switch-mode AC-DC power converters are studied, and their performance with respect to total harmonic distortion (THD), efficiency, power factor and losses are analyzed. The HIL-simulation is implemented in an Altera Cyclone II DE2 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Board and in the Matlab/Simulink environment. A comparison of the simulation and HIL-simulation results is also provided.
