  • As a basic study to recover the copper from the copper converter slag, the characterisitcs of converter slag was studied. The results obtained in this work are as follows. 1. The copper converter slag is composed of Cu, $Cu_2$S, $Fe_3$$O_4$, Fayalite and silicate. 2. It is supposed that magnetite in converter slag is oxidized to hematite at $720^{\circ}C$ and this phase is soluted to fayalite. 3. As the converter slag is added in the water solution, pH increased and the heavy metal ions in the water are adsorbed on the slag. 4. Work index of the converter slag cooled for the 10 hour and the 2 hour are 25~27 kWh/ton and 35 kWh/ton, respectively. 5. In the case of grinding test of converter slag, fayalite in converter slag is easily grinded than magnetite in converter slag.

  • To examine the applicabilty of the converter furnace slag from iron-works as concrete aggregate respective concrete furnace slag with contents of 20%. 40%, 60%. 80% were mixed with granulated slag, and the strength and stability tests for these specimens were followed. The slump value of the concrete mixed with converter furnace slag was higher than that of the conventional concrete. Furnace slag and granulated slag was increased as the increase of converter furnace content. The strength of the concrete mixed with converter furnace slag and granulate slag increased as an increase of converter furnace content and age. The expansion rate of the concrete mixed with converter furnace slag and granulated slag increased from 0.007% to 0.19% as the converter furnace content changed from 20% to 80%. From the above results in the strength and expansion rate, the concrete with the converter furnace content of 40% was considered to be recommandable for the stable construction of the concrete. Calculated formulas for tensile strength(${\sigma}_t$) and flexural strength(${\sigma}_f$) from the regression a.nalysis of the correlations among these compressive strength (${\sigma}_c$), tensile strength and flexural strength are as follows. ${\sigma}_t$ = 0.16952${\sigma}_c$ - 4.9313 ${\sigma}_f$ = 0.25727${\sigma}_c$ + 6.0528

  • The aggregate properties of chilled converter slag reformed by atomizing liquid converter slag were investigated. The properties of mortars with various replacement of standard sand by chilled converter slag as recycled fine aggregates were investigated. The particle shape of chilled converter slag by atomizing was a sphere with an open cavity which is enclosed with two layers like a bored coconut. Specific gravity, unit weight and fineness modulus increased with increasing the replacement, and solid content had the maximum at the replacement of 75% and water absorption rate had the minimum at the replacement. The hardened mortars with higher replacements have the higher specific gravity and the denser texture.

  • The use of converter slag as an aggregate for concrete is limited due to the risk of expansion. This study analyzed the substances causing the expansion of converter slag and evaluated the possibility of its use as an aggregate for concrete through separation and selection. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that CaO and MgO were concentrated in the slag particles inducing expansion, and it was confirmed that it was possible to separate them from non-expanded particles through magnetic.

  • Recently it is difficult to secure sand used in the improvement of soft ground, and so it is necessary to find alternative materials. For this reason many researchers are studying and trying to find new substitute materials. One of the materials is considered as converter slag by wind fracture which is generated in the production of steel manufacture by electric circuit. It is environment friendly since it is a recycled material and economical since it is cheaper than sand. To investigate the applicability of converter slag by wind fracture as the alternative material such as vertical drains, it is necessary to check the drainage effect of this in the field construction. In order to attain an successful design it is important to predict problems encountered in field construction. Accordingly, in this study the laboratory test was executed under different conditions in advance of applying of the field. A total of 4 cases including slag, sand+slag, pack slag and sand as vertical drains was conducted, and at the base of the laboratory test the field test was executed and analyzed.

  • Each year, about four million tons of steel slag, a by-product produced during the manufacture of steel by refining pig iron in the converter furnace, is generated. It is difficult to recycle this steel slag as aggregate for concrete because the reaction with water and free-CaO in steel slag results in a volume expansion that leads to cracking. However, the steel slag used in this study is atomized using an air-jet method, which rapidly changes the melting substance at high temperature into a solid at a room temperature and prevents free-CaO from being generated in steel slag. This rapidly-cooled steel slag has a spherical shape and is even heavier than natural aggregate, making it suitable for the aggregate of radiation shielding concrete. This study deals with the radiation shielding property of concrete that uses the rapidly-cooled steel slag from the oxidizing process in the converter furnace as fine aggregate. It was shown that the radiation shielding performance of concrete mixed with rapidly-cooled steel slag is even more superior than that of ordinary concrete.

  • In this paper, we researched and compared the properties of steel slag(is divided with electric arc furnace slag and converter slag) as concrete aggregate by measuring physical and chemical characteristics of it. The steel slag mainly contains SiO2 and CaO as the chemical composition. The reaction with water and a little of free CaO in the slag causes slag's volume to expanse. Therefore, we used several aging methods in order to decrease the characteristics of slag volume expansion. The physical properties of steel slag aggregate is researched and then the strength of concrete with the steel slag aggregate is measured.

  • In order to maximize the recycling of converter slag to the more valuable fields, such as high quality aggregates for construction, cement industry and flux for ion making. It will be very important to control the compositions and properties of converter slag to suit the purpose of utilizastion. In this study, converter slag (STELCO, CANADA) was mixed with 5%~30% $SiO_2$and 7% carbon, and then reduced at $1650^{\circ}C$. After the reduction was completed, the reformed slags were cooled to room temperature in the furnace. All of the slags were then characterized using SEM-EDX, XRD and chemical analysis. Also the compressive strengths and densities of the reformed slags were measured to compare with natural aggregates. XRD analysis shows that th phases of reformed slags are changed from bredigite+merwinite mixed phases of 10% $SiO_2$added reduction to akermanite phases of 20% and 30% $SiO_2$ added reduction. But the SEM-EDX analysis revealed that the phase distribution of the reformed slags was changed very sensitively and complicately depends on the change of slag compositions. And also the properties of reformed slags are changed very much depend on the phase distribution. About one third of Cadmium and on fifth of Vanadium are remained in reduction reformed converter slag. Another heavy metal elements such as cobalt, zinc, lead are removed up to more than 90-95% of original slag. The compressive strength and density of 25% $SiO_2$ added and reformed slag is very near to natural granite. This is superior more than 10% to Thyssen's $SiO_2$ added and oxidized converter slag aggregates.

  • To study the possibility of agricultural utilization of the sewage sludge and the converter slag, the chemical properties of soil, the growth response of corn plant and uptake of inorganic nutrients in plant tissues were investigated by application of the composts made of the sewage sludge and converter slag. Uptake of inorganic nutrients in stem and leaf of corn plant were decreased by applications of the composts. The content of heavy metals in soil and corn plant were investigated, but the results of show that the concentrations of heavy metals are much low.

  • Reduced and modified converter slag was ball milled and sieved to -200/+325 mesh. CaO,$SiO_2$, $Fe_2$$O_3$ was added to slag powder and mixed to make it similar to the composition of normal portlant cement. The pellet made of this powder was heated from $1250^{\circ}C$ to $1450^{\circ}C$ for 15 min~45 min. Most feasible condition for making slag cement clinker is the heating more than 20 min at $1450^{\circ}C$. The compressive strength of the mortar made of this slag cement clinker was better than that of normal port-lant cement in long time curing.
