  • A statistical procedure, which uses response surface method and Monte Carlo simulation technique, is proposed for analyzing the thermal margin of light water reactor core. The statistical thermal margin analysis method performs the best.estimate thermal margin evaluation by the probabilistic treatment of uncertainties of input parameters. This methodology is applied to KNU-1 core thermal margin analysis under the steady state nominal operating condition. Also discussed are the comparisons with conventional deterministic method and Improved Thermal Design Procedure of Westinghouse. It is deduced from this study that the response surface method is useful for performing the statistical thermal margin analysis and that thermal margin improvement is assured through this procedure.

  • Most researches of transforming sequential programs into parallel programs have been based on the loop structure transformation method. However, most programs have implicit interprocedure parallelism. This paper suggests a way of extracting parallelism from the loops with procedure calls using the data dependency elimination method. Most parallelization of the loop with procedure calls have been conducted for extracting parallelism from the uniform code. In this paper, we propose interprocedural transformation, which can be apply to both uniform and nonuniform code. We show the examples of uniform, nonuniform, and complex code parallelization. We then evaluated the performance of the various transformation methods using the CRAY-T3E system. The comparison results show that the proposed algorithm out-performs other conventional methods.

  • In conventional transportation problem (TP), all the parameters are always certain. But, many of the real life situations in industry or organization, the parameters (supply, demand and cost) of the TP are not precise which are imprecise in nature in different factors like the market condition, variations in rates of diesel, traffic jams, weather in hilly areas, capacity of men and machine, long power cut, labourer's over time work, unexpected failures in machine, seasonal changes and many more. To counter these problems, depending on the nature of the parameters, the TP is classified into two categories namely type-2 and type-4 fuzzy transportation problems (FTPs) under uncertain environment and formulates the problem and utilizes the trapezoidal fuzzy number (TrFN) to solve the TP. The existing ranking procedure of Liou and Wang (1992) is used to transform the type-2 and type-4 FTPs into a crisp one so that the conventional method may be applied to solve the TP. Moreover, the solution procedure differs from TP to type-2 and type-4 FTPs in allocation step only. Therefore a simple and efficient method denoted by PSK (P. Senthil Kumar) method is proposed to obtain an optimal solution in terms of TrFNs. From this fuzzy solution, the decision maker (DM) can decide the level of acceptance for the transportation cost or profit. Thus, the major applications of fuzzy set theory are widely used in areas such as inventory control, communication network, aggregate planning, employment scheduling, and personnel assignment and so on.

  • FRC/ceromer system provides the clinician with a durable, flexible, and esthetic alternative to conventional porcelain fused to metal crowns. FRC is the matrix which is silica-coated and embedded in a resin matrix. The ceromer material which is a second generation indirect composite resin contains silanized, microhybrid inorganic fillers embedded in a light-curing organic matrix. FRC/ceromer restoration has a several advantages: better shock absorption, less wear of occluding teeth, translucency, color stability, bonding ability to dental hard tissues, and resiliency. It has versatility of use including inlay, onlay, single crown, and esthetic veneers. With adhesive technique, it can be used for single tooth replacement in forms of inlay adhesion bridge. In single tooth missing case, conventional PFM bridge has been used for esthetic restoration. However, this restoration has several disadvantages such as high cost, potential framework distortion during fabrication, and difficulty in repairing fractures. Inlay adhesion bridge with FRC/ceromer would be a good alternative treatment plan. This article describes a cases restored with Targis/Vectris inlay adhesion bridge. Tooth preparation guide, fabrication procedure, and cementation procedure of this system will be dealt. The strength/weakness of this restoration will be mentioned, also. If it has been used appropriately in carefully selected case, it can satisfy not only dentist's demand of sparing dental hard tissue but also patient's desire of seeking a esthetic restorations with a natural appearance.

  • The cycloid reducer has very high efficiency, high ratios, high stiffness and small size, in comparison with a conventional gear mechanism, which makes it an attractive candidate for limited space and precision application such as industrial robot. There are several publications on analysis and design of the cycloid reducer, however, it was assumed that the contact stiffness of pin rollers and cycloid disk is constant regardless of their contact geometry. Moreover, the torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer couldn't be calculated due to the assumption. In this paper, we present a new procedure of calculating torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer using Hertz contact theory. First, conventional force analysis of the cycloid reducer is briefly reviewed. Then, iterative numerical calculation procedure of the contact stiffness is proposed based on the Hertz contact theory where the contact stiffness depends on the contact force. In addition, total torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer is estimated considering its rolling element bearing stiffness. The torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer is dominated by the rolling element bearing stiffness since the contact stiffness of the cycloid disk is too large.

  • The search for a design that meets both performance and safety, with minimal cost and lesser environmental impact was always the goal of structural engineers. In general, the design of conventional reinforced concrete structures is an iterative process based on rules of thumb established from the personal experience and intuition of the designer. However, such procedure makes the design process exhaustive and only occasionally leads to the best solution. In such context, this work presents the development and implementation of a mathematical formulation for obtaining optimal sections of reinforced concrete columns subjected to uniaxial flexural compression, based on the verification of strength proposed by the Brazilian standard NBR 6118 (ABNT 2007). To minimize the cost of the reinforced concrete columns, the Simulated Annealing optimization method was used, in which the amount and diameters of the reinforcement bars and the dimensions of the columns cross sections were considered as discrete variables. The results obtained were compared to those obtained from the conventional design procedure and other optimization methods, in an attempt to verify the influence of resistance class, variations in the magnitudes of bending moment and axial force, and material costs on the optimal design of reinforced concrete columns subjected to uniaxial flexural compression.

  • Accuracy is the most important thing in implant prosthesis, for this reason it is essential procedure to check the accuracy of impression taking. However, impression material has its own error and the error occurs in model-making procedure. As an alternative way to this, using intraoral scanner can be suggested and many studies were issued reporting that there's no statistically significant difference in accuracy between intraoral scanner and conventional impression. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to report the process of making of implant prosthesis using intraoral scanner, which is more convenient, fast, accurate compared with conventional method.

  • Space maintainers needs following extraction of primary molars, due to severe dental caries under general anesthesia. Delivery of conventional space maintainers has three of the disadvantages of the method, there being a impression taking and time consuming due to laboratory procedure, and delivery problem due to relaxed tongue. For this problem improved, modified space maintainer is prefabricated before procedure, and adjust, delivery in operation room, favorable results were obtained. The following results were obtained. 1. Delivery time is very reduced than conventional space maintainers. 2. After space maintainer delivery, follow check-up, without impingement of soft tissue, distortion of wire. After space maintainer delivery, continuous research is required so that space maintainer delivery is applied to usual dental treatment, and it is necessary of long term research.

  • This paper summarizes an experimental and analytical study on the application of viscoelastic dampers as energy dissipation devices in structural applications. It can be concluded the viscoelastic dampers are effective in reducing excessive vibrations of structures under strong earthquake ground motions. It is also found that the modal strain energy method can be used to reliably predict the equivalent structural damping, and the seismic response of a viscoelastically damped structure can be accurately estimated by conventional modal analysis techniques. Based on the above studies, a design procedure for viscoelastically damped structures is presented. This design procedure fits naturally into the conventional structural design flow chart by including damping ratio as an additional design parameter.

  • Conventional processing of biological materials including nematode parasites for scanning electron microscopy includes fixation with glutaraldehyde and osmium, followed by dehydration in an ascending grade of ethanol, and finally freeze drying. This procedure takes about 8 to 12 h depending on the characteristics of samples. Microwave irradiation of 2,450 MHz enhance the action of cross-linking fixatives and can greatly accelerate various stages of tissue processing. In this study, samples of nematode parasites, Setaria digitata, were fixed by a combination of conventional chemical fixation and the microwave irradiation during the process. The microwave irradiation was also incorporated in the serial dehydration process with ethanol. The complete procedure from the initial fixation to the completion of dehydration with ethanol was reduced to 1 h with good preservation of the ultrastructural details of the specimens.
