This study was conducted to find out the effects of $CO_2$ fertilization (1,000ppm) on the quality and storability of 'Maehyang' strawberry fruits. Qualities such as firmness, soluble solid, and acidity of strawberry fruits showed higher numbers in those treated with $CO_2$ fertilization compared to those after harvest. Strawberry fruits were stored at $8^{\circ}C$; MA condition using $20,000cc{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}{\cdot}atm^{-1}$ OTR (oxygen transmission rate) films and conventional condition using unsealed PE box stored for 20 and 10 days, respectively. Fresh weight loss rate was less than 1.0% in MA storage regardless of $CO_2$ fertilization treatment. Concentrations of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and ethylene in OTR films did not show any significant difference between $CO_2$ fertilization treatment and control (nontreatment) during storage. $CO_2$ fertilization treatments maintained higher firmness after storage regardless of storage methods, but soluble solid, acidity, and surface color did not differ among the treatments. Visual quality and off-flavor based on sensory evaluation was the highest in $CO_2$ fertilization treated strawberry and stored at a MA condition, and was the lowest in $CO_2$ fertilization treated strawberry and those stored in a conventional condition, respectively. The fungal incidence rate of strawberry fruits showed less in $CO_2$ fertilization treatment than control during both MA and conventional storage. These results suggest that $CO_2$ fertilization can improve firmness, increase visual quality after harvest and storage at $8^{\circ}C$, and the MA storage method enhances the shelf-life of 'Maehyang' strawberry fruits.
Ethaboxam is the first proprietary fungicide developed in Korea, registered in 1998 and commercialized in 1999 by LG Chemical Ltd., Korea. It is a derivative of aminothiazole carboxamide and formulated into 25% wettable powder for practical application in fields. Ethaboxam effectively controlled cucumber downy mildew caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, potato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans, and pepper Phytophthora blight caused by P. capsici, and was superior or comparable to the commercial standards, when foliarly sprayed 3∼5 times until dripping off at approximately 7-day intervals during the growing season. Ethaboxam was required at least 125 mg/liter and 250 mg/liter for effective control of cucumber downy mildew, and potato late blight and pepper Phytophthora blight, respectively. There was not phytotoxicity observed o leaves, stems or fruits of cucumber, potato and pepper from any trial.
The plant breeding technology was developed with genetic engineering. Many researchers and breeders have turned from traditional breeding to molecular breeding. Genetically modified organisms (GMO) were developed via molecular breeding technology. Currently, molecular breeding technologies facilitate efficient plant breeding without introducing foreign genes, in virtue by of gene editing technology. Gene targeting (GT) via homologous recombination (HR) is one of the best gene editing methods available to modify specific DNA sequences in genomes. GT utilizes DNA repair pathways. Thus, DNA repair systems are controlled to enhance HR processing. Engineered sequence specific endonucleases were applied to improve GT efficiency. Engineered sequence specific endonucleases like the zinc finger nuclease (ZFN), TAL effector nuclease (TALEN), and CRISPR-Cas9 create DNA double-strand breaks (DSB) that can stimulate HR at a target site. RecQl4, Exo1 and Rad51 are effectors that enhance DSB repair via the HR pathway. This review focuses on recent developments in engineered sequence specific endonucleases and ways to improve the efficiency of GT via HR effectors in plants.
Secondary walls have recently drawn research interest as a primary source of sugars for liquid biofuel production. Secondary walls are composed of a complex mixture of the structural polymers cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. A matrix of hemicellulose and lignin surrounds the cellulose component of the plant's cell wall in order to protect the cell from enzymatic attacks. Such resistance, along with the variability seen in the proportions of the major components of the mixture, presents process design and operating challenges to the bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuel. Expanding bioenergy production to the commercial scale will require a significant improvement in the growth of feedstock as well as in its quality. Plant biotechnology offers an efficient means to create "targeted" changes in the chemical and physical properties of the resulting biomass through pathway-specific manipulation of metabolisms. The successful use of the genetic engineering approach largely depends on the development of two enabling tools: (1) the discovery of regulatory genes involved in key pathways that determine the quantity and quality of the biomass, and (2) utility promoters that can drive the expression of the introduced genes in a highly controlled manner spatially and/or temporally. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the transcriptional regulatory network that controls secondary wall biosynthesis and discuss experimental approaches to developing-xylem-specific utility promoters.

In the Goesan region, located in Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea, a significant outbreak of soft rot infections was documented in August 2021, affecting fruits of Momordica charantia, commonly known as bitter melon or bitter gourd. The symptoms included a noticeable transition to yellowing in the affected fruits, eventually leading to their collapse. The bacterial strain KNUB-09-21 was isolated from the diseased fruits. Molecular analysis, using the sequences of the 16S rRNA region and three housekeeping genes (dnaX, recA, and leuS), along with the results of compound utilization in the API ID 32 GN system, provide strong evidence for the identification of the isolate KNUB-09-21 as Pectobacterium brasiliense. The pathogenicity of strain KNUB-09-21 on M. charantia was confirmed through a controlled inoculation test. Within two days, inoculated fruits displayed soft rot symptoms closely resembling those observed in naturally affected fruits. This is the first report of soft rot on M. charantia in Korea.
The study was conducted to get basic information for haploid production of Petunia hybrida through anther culture by investigating several factors, namely anther stage, culture medium, cold treatment, and genotypes. The results are summarized as follows; Four genotypes of Petunia hybrida were used in a study of anther culture. Plants of each genotype were grown in controlled environments at $20-30^{\circ}C$ with a 16h photoperiod. Equal numbers were harvested from each genotype. The anthers were taken from buds which had received the 14 days' cold treatment at $4^{\circ}C$. Anthers were dissected out aseptically and plated on 1/2 strength MS agar medium containing 5.0mg/${\ell}$ 6-Benzylaminopurine(BAP). Four weeks after culture, light green callus was formed. From these calli, plantlets were regenerated on MS medium containing 2.0mg/${\ell}$ 2-isopentenyl adenine(2ip) after 3 weeks.

This experiment was conducted to possibility for leaf production of wasabi using hydroponics system. When they were grown in aeroponics and soiless culture such as saprolite and Coir, photosynthesis and transpiration rate were high and marketable yield $(leaf\;width\;11{\sim}13cm)$ showed $11.2{\sim}11.7$ of leaf number per plant and $52{\sim}53.8g$ fresh weight. In spring periods, the highest yield was 25.7 of leaf number per plant in nutrient solution of Yamasaki's solution developed in Japan in deep culture during 130 days. It showed be possibility that marketable leaves harvested one leaf every $2{\sim}4$ days though spring and fall culture periods using hydroponics controlled in environmental culture.
Organic materials reveal the remarkable absorption and high buffer capacity for nutrient. Hence, organic materials need some different nutrient management skill from inorganic one. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of EC level of nutrient solution on the yield and quality of cut rose grown in the mixed substrate of coir and perlite. 3 EC levels of nutrient solution was treated, which were 0.7, 1.0, 1.3 times of standard solution (Aichiken solution, Japan) for cut rose hydroponics. EC of the standard solution was changed by season following as 1.4 (Apr.~June), 1.0 (July~Aug.), 1.4 (Sep.~Oct.), and $1.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ (Nov.~Mar.) subsequently. The supply of nutrient solution was controlled by the signal of water potential at -5kPa using frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) sensor. As the results, marketable yield was similar for all treatments until 3rd harvest, but was decreased in high EC level from 4th harvest to 7th harvest as final. 0.7 times of standard solution decreased the ratio of unmarketable rose having short stem below 70cm and increased the ratio of high quality rose having long stem above 91cm. The flower weight and stem diameter of cut rose was higher in the low EC treatment than the others.
Based on the place of its origin, pear tree (Pyrus spp.) is largely divided into European pears (P. communis, cultivated mainly in Europe and the U.S.) and Asian pears (P. pyrifolia, P. bretschneideri, and P. ussuriensis, distributed and grown in East Asian countries including China, Japan, and Korea). Most pear trees have 17 chromosomes (diploidy, 2n=2x=34). Their genetic studies and precise cultivar breeding are highly restricted by conditions such as self-incompatibility controlled by S-locus and juvenility as one major character of fruit crops. Genetic studies on Pyrus have been promoted by the development of various molecular markers. These markers are being utilized actively in various genetic studies, including genetic relationship analysis, genetic mapping, and QTL analysis. In addition, research on pear genetic linkage maps has been extended to studies for the identification of QTL for target traits such as disease resistance and genetic loci of useful traits. NGS technology has radically reduced sequencing expenses based on massive parallel reactions to enable high-capacity and high-efficiency. NGS based genome analyses have been completed for Chinese pear 'Danshansuli' and European pear 'Bartlett'. In Korea, GWAS for agricultural valuable traits such as floral structure, ripening, and total soluble contents have been conducted through resequencing. GBS has been performed for 'Whangkeumbae', 'Cheongsilri', and 'Minibae'.
Responses of antioxidant enzymes on chilling and drought stress in tomato seedlings were investigated. Growing patterns of tomato based on fresh weight of tomato seedlings were severely affected by chilling and drought stress. Fresh weight of tomato seedlings were reduced by 69.5% in chilling stress and 50.6% in drought stress compared to those in the unstressed control seedlings after 12 days of stress. The specific and gel activity of SOD and POD in the leaves, shoots, and roots of tomato seedlings were significantly increased by chilling and drought stress. Activation of SOD and POD activity by chilling stress were higher in the roots than those of drought stress. However, activation of SOD and POD activity by drought stress were higher in the leaves and shoots than those of chilling stress. The specific and gel activity of GR in the leaves, shoots, and roots of tomato seedlings were also significantly increased by chilling and drought stress. When the seedlings were treated with chilling or drought stress, one GR isozyme band (GR-3) was newly expressed in the leaves of tomato seedlings. The specific and gel activity of PPO was significantly increased in the roots and shoots of tomato seedlings by chilling and drought stress, respectively. However, the specific and gel activity of PPO in the leaves is no difference between stressed and controlled tomato seedlings.
