  • This study examined the effect of the Collaborative Problem-Solving for Character Competence (CoProC) instruction model within the context of secondary science education. The participants of this study were comprised of 143 Korean students, each of whom was in the 10th grade spread across four class cohorts. These cohorts were further divided into an experimental group (comprised of 73 students from two different classes), which received the CoProC program; and a control group (70 students from two other classes), which did not. In order to assess the effect of CoProC instruction model upon participants' character competence, we designed and administered a Character Competence Test for participants. The CoProC instruction model consists of 3 fundamental steps: Preparation, Problem-solving, and Evaluation. Key character competence targeted in the CoProC program include caring, collaboration, communication, responsibility, respect, honesty, self-regulation, and the development of positive self-image. Thus, these same qualities were targeted and analyzed in the Character Competence Test, which was administered before and after the CoProC activities. The results show a significant increase in the experimental group's competency for caring, collaboration, responsibility, respect, and self-regulation when compared to the control group. Based on these results, we have found that CoProC instruction model to be an effective teaching intervention toward cultivating character competence in a secondary science education setting.

  • The effects of computer-assisted instruction (CAl) using molecular-level animation upon students' conceptions, attitudes toward science instruction, and learning motivation were investigated. Treatment and control groups (2 classes) were selected from a girls middle school in Seoul, and taught about the motion of molecule for 5 class hours. Before instruction, the short-version Group Assessment of Logical Thinking (GALT) and the Patterns of Adaptive Survey were administered, and the grade for the previous science course was obtained. The GALT score was used as a blocking variable, and the others as covariates. After the instructions, the researcher-made conceptions test, the test of attitudes toward science instruction, and the motivation questionnaire were administered. The perception questionnaire of CAl was also administered to the treatment group. Although more students in the CAl group had sound understanding about the motion of molecule, the scores of the conceptions test for the two groups were not significantly different at .05 level of significance. The students in the CAl group, however, were found to have more positive attitudes toward science instruction and learning motivation. In the perception questionnaire of CAl, most students in the treatment group exhibited positive attitudes toward the CAl. However, some students mentioned that they were disturbed by noisy environments, and that they could not understand some content presented. Educational implications are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze changing aspect of teacher and student's value in mathematics instruction. For this purpose, teacher and student's value are analyzed through value questionnaire by four times. The results of this study revealed that although value are individual's deep decision mechanism, it could change considerably by the time. Teacher wasn't compel students to follow her value. Rather, teacher was modified instruction goal to reflect students thinking what is important in mathematics lesson. First, in case of mathematical value, rationalism, objectism, mystery were convergent each other. And control was almost unchanged and openness has been onwards and upwards. Second, in case of mathematics educational value, understanding, pleasure, terminology and application were convergent each other. However achievement was almost unchanged. Also, to teach effectively, teacher using several kinds strategy while negotiate with student's value continuously. On the basis of these results, this paper includes several implications for the future study about values in mathematics which could be the critical factor in student centered instruction.

  • 8 bit and 16 bit microprocessors are widely used in the small sited control machine. The embedded microprocessors which is integrated on a single chip with the memory and I/O circuit must have simple hardware circuit and high code density. This paper proposes a 16 bit high code density EISC(Extendable Instruction Set Computer) microprocessor. SE1608 has 8 general purpose registers and 16 bit fixed length instruction set which has the short length offset and small immediate operand. By using an extend register and extend flag, the offset and immediate operand in instruction could be extended. SE1608 is implemented with 12,000 gate FPGA and all of its functions have been tested and verified at 8MHz. And the cross assembler, the cross C/C++compiler and the instruction simulator of the SE1608 have been designed and verified. This paper also proves that the code density$.$ of SE1608 shows 140% and 115% higher code density than 16 bit microprocessor H-8300 and MN10200 respectively, which is much higher than traditional microprocessors. As a consequence, the SE1608 is suitable for the embedded microprocessor since it requires less program memory to any other ones, and simple hardware circuit.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the structures underlying Korean elementary teachers' attitudinal beliefs toward reform-oriented mathematics instruction and predict their intentions to change traditionally-oriented teaching practice. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) developed by Fishbein and Ajzen provided a conceptual framework for the examination of factors that influence Korean teachers' beliefs, attitudes, subjective norms and perceptions of control factors. Data were gathered through a survey instrument from 281 teachers who teach mathematics in a metropolitan city of Korea. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses were conducted to analyze the data. Findings indicate that Korean elementary teachers' change in Instructional practice is based primarily on their judgements regarding the likelihood of occurrences of certain consequences if they engage in teaching mathematics in a reform-oriented way. Teachers' perceptions of important others regarding the reform-oriented mathematics instruction seem to play a minor role in teachers' instructional change. Teachers' perceptions about control factors that prohibit or help teach mathematics in a reform-oriented way do not seem to make significant improvement in predicting their intentions to change traditionally-oriented teaching practice.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of individualized learning adapted to students' conceptions using smart devices in science instruction upon students' conceptual understanding, the retention of conception, achievement, learning motivation, enjoyment of science lessons, and perception about individualized learning using smart devices. Four seventh-grade classes at a coed middle school in Seoul were assigned to a control group and a treatment group. Students were taught about molecular motions for seven class periods. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the scores of a conception test, the retention of the conception test, a learning motivation test, and an enjoyment of science lessons test for the treatment group were significantly higher than those for the control group. Although the score of the treatment group was higher than that of the control group in the achievement test, the difference was not statistically significant. Students' perceptions about individualized learning using smart devices were also found to be positive.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze effects of blended learning on abilities to use smart-phone and applications among students with intellectual disabilities. To do this, 30 students with intellectual disabilities who were enrolled in special school and special classroom in Jellanam-do and Gwanju metropolitan city were selected for this study, and were placed experimental and control groups of 15 students. The experimental group was provided with blended learning in which direct instruction, anchored instruction, experience activities, and community-based instruction were combined, and the control group was provided with traditional teacher-centered lecture style intervention. Pre-, post-, and maintenance evaluations were conducted two weeks after intervention. The collected data was analyzed the repeated two-way ANOVA. In the result of study, the experimental group improved on abilities to use smart-phone and applications than control group. Blended learning is a teaching method that can be a usefully used when educating how to use smart-phone and applications to students with intellectual disabilities.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of explicit and reflective instruction about nature of science (NOS) using episodes from the history of science upon students' understanding about NOS, achievement, and enjoyment of science lessons. Four classes of ninth graders (N=129) at a coed middle school were divided into the control and the treatment groups. The students were taught about the composition of material for 11 classes. Before the instruction, most of the students in both the control and the treatment groups held naive views about NOS. After the instructions, the views about NOS of the control group students did not change, whereas the students in the treatment group held more adequate views about NOS. The high-level students in the treatment group showed more adequate views about NOS than the low-level students. However, there were no significant differences between the test scores of the two groups in the achievement and the enjoyment of science lessons.
