  • In this paper, we introduce an iterative scheme for finding a common element of the set of solutions of a generalized equilibrium problem and the set of common fixed points of a finite family of asymptotically ${\kappa}$-strict pseudo-contractions in Hilbert spaces. Weak and strong convergence theorems are established for the iterative scheme.

  • We introduce a new approach that allows us to solve, algorithmically, the contractive completion problem. In this article, we provide concrete necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of contractive completions of Hankel partial contractions of size $4{\times}4$ using a Moore-Penrose inverse of a matrix.

  • The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study the semigroups of nonlinear contractions in probabilistic normed spaces and to establish the Crandall-Liggett's exponential formula for some kind of accretive mappings in probabilistic normed spaces. As applications, we utilize these results to study the Cauchy problem for a kind of differential inclusions with accertive mappings in probabilistic normed spaces.

  • It is shown that if $A{\geq}0$ and T are two bounded linear operators on a complex Hilbert space H satisfying the inequality $T^*\;AT{\leq}A$ and the condition $AT=A^{1/2}TA^{1/2}$, then there exists the maximum reducing subspace for A and $A^{1/2}T$ on which the equality $T^*\;AT=A$ is satisfied. We concretely express this subspace in two ways, and as applications, we derive certain decompositions for quasinormal contractions. Also, some facts concerning the quasi-isometries are obtained.

  • The effect of papaverine on the contractions induced by adrenergic neurotransmission in the isolated mouse vas deferens was investigated. Papaverine, $10^{-7}-10^{-5}$M, showed a dose-dependent and reversible inhibition on the induced contractions. When the frequency of stimulation was varied (2.5-20.0 Hz), the inhibitory effect tended to be marked at the lower frequencies.

  • We present ${\alpha}$-type rational F-contractions in metric-like spaces, and respective fixed and common fixed point results for weakly ${\alpha}$-admissible mappings. Useful examples illustrate the effectiveness of the presented results. As applications, we obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions of a certain type of integral equations followed by examples of nonlinear fractional differential equations that are verified numerically.

  • In this paper, we shall introduce the new notions of ω-orbital admissible mappings, ω-interpolative Kannan type contraction and ω-interpolative Ciric-Reich-Rus type contraction. In the setting of these new contractions, we will prove some fixed point theorems in bipolar metric spaces. Some existing results from literature are also deduced from our main results. Some examples are also provided to illustrate the theorems.

  • Propofol is a widely used anesthetic. Many studies have shown that propofol has direct effects on blood vessels, but the precise mechanism is not fully understood. Secondary intrapulmonary artery rings from male rats were prepared and mounted in a Multi Myograph System. The following constrictors were used to induce contractions in isolated artery rings: high $K^+$ solution (60 mmol/L); U46619 solution (100 nmol/L); 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT; $3{\mu}mol/L$); or phenylephrine (Phe; $1{\mu}mol/L$). The relaxation effects of propofol were tested on high $K^+$ or U46619 precontracted rings. Propofol also was added to induce relaxation of rings preconstricted by U46619 after pretreatment with the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor $N^G$-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). The effects of propofol on $Ca^{2+}$ influx via the L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels were evaluated by examining contraction-dependent responses to $CaCl_2$ in the absence or presence of propofol (10 to $300{\mu}mol/L$). High $K^+$ solution and U46619 induced remarkable contractions of the rings, whereas contractions induced by 5-HT and Phe were weak. Propofol induced dose-dependent relaxation of artery rings precontracted by the high $K^+$ solution. Propofol also induced relaxation of rings precontracted by U46619 in an endothelium-independent way. Propofol at different concentrations significantly inhibited the $Ca^{2+}$-induced contractions of pulmonary rings exposed to high $K^+$-containing and $Ca^{2+}$-free solution in a dose-dependent manner. Propofol relaxed vessels precontracted by the high $K^+$ solution and U46619 in an endothelium-independent way. The mechanism for this effect may involve inhibition of calcium influx through voltage-operated calcium channels (VOCCs) and receptor-operated calcium channels (ROCCs).

  • In this paper, we investigated the maximum ankle joint plantarflexion moment(MPM) of young and elderly subjects during various modes of isokinetic contractions with special interest in the elderly females who were reported to have higher fall rate than the elderly males. Subjects include the young subjects(14 males: $22.7{\pm}2.5yrs$, 13 females: $20.5{\pm}1.3yrs$) and the elderly subjects(17 males: $65.8{\pm}10.5yrs$, 26 females: $71.4{\pm}5.2yrs$). The MPM was normalized by each subject's body weight. The MPM of elderly females was the weakest among the groups, particularly, at the eccentric contractions. The male-to-female ratio of MPM was greater in the elderly than in the young and the young-to-elderly ratio of MPM was greater in female than in male, both during the eccentric contractions. The result suggests that the decreased muscle force per body weight, especially at the eccentric contraction, may be one reason for the more frequent fall of the elderly female than the elderly male.

  • In our previous study, we found that spermine and putrescine inhibited spontaneous and acetylcholine (ACh)-induced contractions of guinea-pig stomach via inhibition of L-type voltage- dependent calcium current ($VDCC_L$). In this study, we also studied the effect of spermidine on mechanical contractions and calcium channel current ($I_{Ba}$), and then compared its effects to those by spermine and putrescine. Spermidine inhibited spontaneous contraction of the gastric smooth muscle in a concentration-dependent manner ($IC_{50}=1.1{\pm}0.11mM$). Relationship between inhibition of contraction and calcium current by spermidine was studied using 50 mM high $K^+$-induced contraction: Spermidine (5 mM) significantly reduced high $K^+$ (50 mM)-induced contraction to 37${\pm}$4.7% of the control (p<0.05), and inhibitory effect of spermidine on $I_{Ba}$ was also observed at a wide range of test potential in current/voltage (I/V) relationship. Pre- and post-application of spermidine (5 mM) also significantly inhibited carbachol (CCh) and ACh-induced initial and phasic contractions. Finally, caffeine (10 mM)-induced contraction which is activated by $Ca^{2+}$-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release (CICR), was also inhibited by pretreatment of spermidine (5 mM). These findings suggest that spermidine inhibits spontaneous and CCh-induced contraction via inhibition of $VDCC_L$ and $Ca^{2+}$ releasing mechanism in guinea-pig stomach.
