This paper presents a new vertex selection scheme for the polygon-based contour approximation. In the proposed method, the entire contour is partitioned into partial segments and they are approximated adaptively with variable accuracy. The approximation accuracy of each segment is controlled based on its relative significance. By computing the relative significance with the texture degradation in the approximation error region, the visual quality enhancement in the reconstructed frames can be achieved under the same amount of the contour data. For this purpose, a decision rule for $d_{max}$ is derived based on inter-region contrasts. In addition, an adaptive vertex selection method using the derived rule is proposed. Experimental results are presented to show the superiority of the proposed method over conventional methods.
Active contour models have been extensively used to segment, match, and track objects of interest in computer vision and image processing applications, particularly to locate object boundaries. With conventional methods an object boundary can be extracted by controlling the internal energy and external energy based on energy minimization. However, this still leaves a number of problems, such as initialization and poor convergence in concave regions. In particular, a contour is unable to enter a concave region based on the stretching and bending characteristic of the internal energy. Therefore, this study proposes a method that controls the internal energy by moving the local perpendicular bisector point of each control point on the contour, and determines the object boundary by minimizing the energy relative to the external energy. Convergence at a concave region can then be effectively implemented as regards the feature of interest using the internal energy, plus several objects can be detected using a multi-detection method based on the initial contour. The proposed method is compared with other conventional methods through objective validation and subjective consideration. As a result, it is anticipated that the proposed method can be efficiently applied to the detection of the pulmonary parenchyma region in medical images.
This paper presents a method to segment wafer ID marks on poor quality images under uncontrolled lighting conditions of the semiconductor process. The active multiple templates matching method is suggested to search ID areas on wafers and segment them into meaningful regions and it would have been impossible to recognize characters using general OCR algorithms. This active template model is designed by applying a snake model that is used for active contour tracking. Active multiple template model searches character areas and segments them into single characters optimally, tracking each character that can vary in a flexible manner according to string configurations. Applying active multiple templates, the optimization of the snake energy is done using Greedy algorithm, to maximize its efficiency by automatically controlling each template gap. These vary according to the configuration of character string. Experimental results using wafer images from real FA environment are presented.

In this paper, we implement an elementary system to correct accent, pronunciation, and intonation in English spoken by non-native English speakers. In case of the accent evaluation, energy and pitch information are used to find stressed syllables, and then we extract the segment information of input patterns using a dynamic time warping method to discriminate and evaluate accent position. For the pronunciation evaluation. we utilize the segment information using the same algorithm as in accent evaluation and calculate the spectral distance measure for each phoneme between input and reference. For the intonation evaluation. we propose nine pattern of slope to estimate pitch contour, then we grade test sentences by accumulated error obtained by the distance measure and estimated slope. Our result shows that 98 percent of accent and 71 percent of pronunciation evaluation agree with perceptual measure. As the result of the intonation evaluation. system represent the similar order of grade for the four sentences having different intonation patterns compared with perceptual evaluation.

A new method for recognizing and locating partially occluded or overlapped two-dimensional objects regardless of their size, translation, and rotation, is presented. Dominant points approximating occuluding contoures of objects are generated by finding local maxima of smoothed k-cosine function, and then used to guide the contour segment matching procedure. Primitives between the dominant points are produced by projecting the local contours onto the line between the dominant points. Robust classification of primitives. Which is crucial for reliable partial shape matching, is performed using adaptive resonance theory (ART2). The matched primitives having similar scale factors and rotation angles are detected in the hough space to identify the presence of the given model in the object scene. Finally the translation vector is estimated by minimizing the mean squred error of the matched contur segment pairs. This model-based matching algorithm may be used in diveerse factory automation applications since models can be added or changed simply by training ART2 adaptively without modifying the matching algorithm.

Several methods for PCB pattern inspection have been tried to detect fine detects in pad contours, but their low detection accuracy results from pattern variations originating from etching, printing and handling processes. The adaptive inspection algorithm has been newly proposed to extract minute defects based on movable segments. With gerber master images of PCB, vertex extractions of a pad boundary are made and then a lot of segments are constructed in master data. The pad boundary is composed of segment units. The proposed method moves these segments to optimal directions of a pad boundary and so adaptively matches segments to pad contours of inspected images, irrespectively of various pattern variations. It makes a fast, accurate and reliable inspection of PCB patterns. Its performances are also evaluated with several images.
As we review the mechanism regarding digital font generation and birth of TrueType font, we realizes that the process is composed of sequential steps such as contour fonts from glyph table. This fact implies that we propose classification of TrueType font in terms of segment width and the number of occurrence from the glyph data.

In this study, we design and implement an eye-gaze estimation system based on the extraction of eye contour and pupil region. In order to effectively extract the contour of the eye and region of pupil, the face candidate regions were extracted first. For the detection of face, YCbCr value range for normal Asian face color was defined by the pre-study of the Asian face images. The biggest skin color region was defined as a face candidate region and the eye regions were extracted by applying the contour and color feature analysis method to the upper 50% region of the face candidate region. The detected eye region was divided into three segments and the pupil pixels in each pupil segment were counted. The eye-gaze was determined into one of three directions, that is, left, center, and right, by the number of pupil pixels in three segments. In the experiments using 5,616 images of 20 test subjects, the eye-gaze was estimated with about 91 percent accuracy.
In this paper, a neural network based approach using a self-organizing feature map is proposed for the segmentation of X ray images. A number of algorithms based on such approaches as histogram analysis, region growing, edge detection and pixel classification have been proposed for segmentation of general images. However, few approaches have been applied to X ray image segmentation because of blur of the X ray image and vagueness of its edge, which are inherent properties of X ray images. To this end, we develop a new model based on the neural network to detect objects in a given X ray image. The new model utilizes Mumford-Shah functional incorporating with a modified adaptive SOFM. Although Mumford-Shah model is an active contour model not based on the gradient of the image for finding edges in image, it has some limitation to accurately represent object images. To avoid this criticism, we utilize an adaptive self organizing feature map developed earlier by the authors.[1] It's learning rule is derived from Mumford-Shah energy function and the boundary of blurred and vague X ray image. The evolution of the neural network is shown to well segment and represent. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed method, segmentation of an industrial part is solved and the experimental results are discussed in detail.

In this paper, we proposed the new segmentation method of optic nerve head and optic cub to consider the depth of optic nerve head on stereo fundus image. We analyzed the error factor of stereo matching on stereo fundus image, and compensated them. For robust extraction of optic nerve head and optic cub, we proposed the modified active contour model to consider the 3D depth of optic nerve head. As experiment result to various stereo fundus images, we confirmed that proposed method can segment optic nerve head and optic cup effectively.
