  • In the near future, we can access information which we want, whenever we want, wherever we use. Because almost devices in ubiquitous environment are connected by either wired or wireless network. Especially, u-Learning emphasizing on pedagogical property is enable to improve learning abilities. As researches of the previous u-Learning. there have been learning by mobile devices such like PDAs as well as the smart classroom, which makes the remote students participate in the existing class. However, these researches have not satisfied pedagogical, cooperative and ubiquitous properties yet. Thus we suggest the framework for both local and mobile classroom, which can make the properties easy to satisfy.

Effects on storytelling materials of statistics in the middle school classroom lesson (중학교 통계단원에 대한 스토리텔링 학습 자료의 수업 적용 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze effects on storytelling materials of statistics in the middle school classroom lesson. For this purpose, a story is developed by the Zazkis & Liljedahl's model and applied to the 7th graders of 4 classes in a middle school. After the comparison between 5 hours of storytelling lessons and ordinary lessons, the following research findings are obtained. First, storytelling material brings a positive effect on student's academic achievement. It is also shown by the qualitative analysis that this result was caused by cognition of data observation, data transformation, and unification of data with context. Second, storytelling material brings a positive effect on student's affective attitude. It is also validated by the qualitative analysis that students show the positive change in mathematical value cognition and the interests in the lesson.

  • Learners and users of a second language have to resort to a variety of conversational strategies or structures to enable them to communicate effectively and competently. Factors affecting effective communication among English as a second or English as foreign language (ESL/EFL) learners are diverse in nature because of different socio-cultural backgrounds. Gambits as a conversational strategy are used to a large extent and teachers must be made aware of such conversational strategies used by English as second or foreign language learners. Thus, studies focusing on conversational strategies among ESL/EFL learners in the English language classroom are important in order to identify the types of conversational strategies used and to help teachers to understand the appropriate conversational strategies and structures. Such understanding can be used to guide learners to use correct conversational strategies when communicating in English. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of gambits as a communication strategy in conversation among non-native speakers of English in an English as a second language(ESL) context based on Kellers conversational strategy signals.   • A Situation-problem, one of the problems in school mathematics, plays a role as the starting point of teaming mathematics. It leads to construct knowledge which is a tool for solving the problems. Whether the problem is a situation-problem or not, it depends upon how to use that problem. Since posing situation-problems is accompanied by prior analysis and planning for teaching in the class, it is a difficult task. This paper focuses on the characteristics of situation-problems and on how their characteristics are realized in the process of classroom instruction. For this purpose, it analyzes the context of classroom instruction to which the 'puzzle problem' model suggested by Brousseau is applied. The model is considered as a typical situation-problem, which aims at proportionality and linearity. In addition, this paper suggests various sources of information that are useful in posing the situation-problems related to the ratio concepts.

Effects of Individual and Classroom Contexts on Peer Victimization of Preschool Children (유아의 또래 괴롭힘 피해에 대한 유아 개인 및 학급 맥락의 영향)

  • This study investigates the effects of individual and classroom variables on peer victimization through the use of multi-level models. The participants were 297 preschool children recruited from preschools. Teachers completed rating scales that assessed peer victimization, aggression, and prosocial behaviors. Peer nomination was used to measure social preference and friendship. The results showed that the aggression level of classrooms as well as social preference and friendship were associated with peer victimization. The findings imply that the individual as well as the social context should be considered before preventive intervention programs for peer victimization are implemented.

Teachers' Goal Orientation and Support for Seeking Help as Predictors of Academic Help-Seeking Behaviors (교실목표 및 수업환경 지각과 도움요청 행동의 관계)

  • The present study examined the relation between academic help-seeking behaviors and classroom context based on students' perceptions of various classroom goals stressed by their teachers and their perceived teacher support for seeking help. The 305 subjects were 5th grade students(162 boys and 143 girls) of an elementary school in Gwangyang. The students completed a questionnaire. Data were analyzed by $2{\times}2$ ANOVA. Results showed that students' help-seeking behaviors were influenced by their teachers' goal orientation and perceived teacher support for seeking help. The results of this study suggest that perceived teacher support for seeking help may be expecially important for some students who could use instrumental help to continue task engagement, and teachers' learning-focused goal orientation is an important variable of instrumental help-seeking behavior.

  • As various changes in education in general and learning environment in particular have promoted different needs and expectations for learning at both personal and social levels, the roles that schools and school teachers typically have with respect to their students are being challenged. Especially with the recent, rapid progress of the artificial intelligence(AI) field, AI could serve beyond the way in which it has been used. Based on a review of some of the related literature and the current development of AI, a view on utilizing AI to be a collaborative, complementary partner with an human mathematics teacher in the classroom in order to support both students and teachers will be discussed.

Exploration of Changes in TIMSS Science Achievement and Educational Context Variables of Cohort Groups with Grade Change (학년 변화에 따른 코호트 집단의 TIMSS 과학 성취도 및 교육맥락변인의 변화 탐색)

  • The TIMSS assessment is conducted every four years, and Korean fourth grade cohort in TIMSS 2011 participated in TIMSS 2015 again as eighth graders, which produced the first achievement data of the cohort group of elementary and middle schools. In this study, in order to investigate the causes of the decline in Korean students' science achievement with grade changes from the fourth to the eighth grade, we analyzed educational context variables such as characteristics of students, teachers, and classroom instructions of the top 5 achievement countries participated in both TIMSS 2011 and TIMSS 2015. According to the results, students' sense of school belonging increased, whereas students' positive attitudes toward science teaching decreased with the grade change from the fourth to the eighth. As for the teacher characteristics, the teacher's professional development activity increased, and the teacher's confidence in science teaching showed similar tendency to the international average. Regarding classroom instruction characteristics, the frequency of inquiry-related science activities was highest at the fourth grade, and lower than the international average at the eighth grade. Based the results, we suggested implications for science teaching and learning as well as further studies including development of differentiated strategy by the school level to improve students' achievement, the necessity of converting into more student-engaging science classes, and the necessity of in-depth study on the teacher related educational contextual variables.

An Investigation of Elementary School Teachers' Knowledge of Fraction Lessons through Classroom Video Analysis (수업 동영상 분석(CVA) 기법을 활용한 분수 수업에 관한 초등 교사의 지식 탐색)

  • Since the importance of teacher knowledge in teaching mathematics has been emphasized, there have been many studies exploring the nature or characteristics of such knowledge. However, there has been lack of research on the tools of investigating teacher knowledge. Given this background, this study explored teachers' knowledge of fraction lessons using classroom video analysis. The analyses of this study showed that knowledge of teaching methods was activated better than that of student thinking or mathematical content. Knowledge of fraction operation was activated better than that of fraction concept. The degree by which teacher knowledge was activated depended on the characteristics of the video clips used in the study. This paper raised some issues about teachers' knowledge of fraction lessons and suggested classroom video analysis as an alternative tool to measure teacher knowledge in the Korean context.
