  • An image obtained from a low light environment results in a low-exposure problem caused by non-ideal camera settings, i.e. aperture size and shutter speed. Of particular note, the multiple color-filter aperture (MCA) system inherently suffers from low-exposure problems and performance degradation in its image classification and registration processes due to its finite size of the apertures. In this context, this paper presents a novel method for the color enhancement of low-exposure images and its application to color shift model-based MCA system for image refocusing. Although various histogram equalization (HE) approaches have been proposed, they tend to distort the color information of the processed image due to the range limits of the histogram. The proposed color enhancement algorithm enhances the global brightness by analyzing the basic cause of the low-exposure phenomenon, and then compensates for the contrast degradation artifacts by using an adaptive histogram specification. We also apply the proposed algorithm to the preprocessing step of the refocusing technique in the MCA system to enhance the color image. The experimental results confirm that the proposed method can enhance the contrast of any low-exposure color image acquired by a conventional camera, and is suitable for commercial low-cost, high-quality imaging devices, such as consumer-grade camcorders, real-time 3D reconstruction systems, digital, and computational cameras.

  • Raman spectra of a single layer graphene sheet placed in different gold substrates were obtained and are discussed in the context of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The gold substrates were composed of a combination of a thermally deposited gold film and a close-packed gold nanosphere layer. The SERS effects were negligible when the excitation wavelength was 514 nm, while the Raman signals were enhanced 3-to 50-fold when the excitation wavelength was 633 nm. The large SERS enhancement accompanied a spectral distortion with appearance of several unidentifiable peaks, as well as enhancement of a broadened D peak. These phenomena are interpreted as the local field enhancement in the nanostructure of the gold substrates. The difference in the enhancement factors among the various gold substrates is explained with a model in which the spatial distribution and polarization of the local field and the orientation of the inserted graphene sheet are considered important.

  • A Phonetic Tied-Mixture (PTM) model has been proposed as a way of efficient decoding in large vocabulary continuous speech recognition systems (LVCSR). It has been reported that PTM model shows better performance in decoding than triphones by sharing a set of mixture components among states of the same topological location[5]. In this paper we propose a Phonetic Tied-Mixture Syllable (PTMS) model which extends PTM technique up to syllables. The proposed PTMS model shows 13% enhancement in decoding speed than PTM. In spite of difference in context dependent modeling (PTM : cross-word context dependent modeling, PTMS : word-internal left-phone dependent modeling), the proposed model shows just less than 1% degradation in word accuracy than PTM with the same beam width. With a different beam width, it shows better word accuracy than in PTM at the same or higher speed.

  • The supercapacitors with extraordinarily high capability for energy storage are attracting growing attention for their potential applications in portable electronic equipments, hybrid vehicles, cellular devices, and so on. The nanostructuring of the electrode surface can provide large surface area and consequently easy diffusion of ions in the capacitors. In addition, compared to two-dimensional nanostructures, the three-dimensional (3D) nano-architecture is expected to lead to significant enhancement of mechanical and electrical properties such as capacitance per unit area of the electrode. Polyaniline (PANi) is known as promising electrode material for supercapacitors due to its desirable properties such as high electro activity, high doping level and environmental stability. In this context, we fabricated well-ordered 3D PANi nanostructures on 3D polystyrene (PS) nanospheres which was arrayed by layer-by-layer stacking method. The height of the PANi nanostructures could be controlled by the number of PS layers stacked. 3D PANi hollow nanospheres were also fabricated by dissolving inner PS nanospheres, which resulted in further enhancement of the surface area and capacitance of the electrode.

  • A new method for relative error continuous and discrete time model order reduction is proposed. The reduction technique is based on two recently developed methods, namely frequency domain balanced truncation within a frequency bound and inner-outer factorization techniques. The proposed method is of interest for practical model order reduction because in this context it shows to keep the accuracy of the approximation as high as possible without sacrificing the computational efficiency. Numerical results show the accuracy and efficiency enhancement of the method.

  • Majority of knowledge management(KM) studies in e-government have been confined to facilitate KM within an organization. But due to citizen-centric(citizen-driven) paradigm shift and advance of web 2.0 communication in recent years, KM between governments and citizen in e-government portals is becoming an important consideration. So a series of studies on knowledge enhanced e-government portal get under way by considering that it is necessary to enhance knowledge of e-government portal and assuming it improves the usability of portal. While the topics of knowledge enhancement and e-government(portal) are widely discussed in their own domains there is a paucity of studies that address these constructs in a joint context. This paper aims to propose conceptual framework of knowledge enhanced e-government portal through structuralization of theoretical discussion with holistic approach. This framework presents an evolutional path of knowledge enhanced e-government portal that consists of three phases and it will be used for realizing the knowledge enhanced portal project as a basic reference model.

  • This paper presents the performance enhancement of automatic bilingual lexicon extraction by using refinement of pivot-context vectors under the standard pivot-based approach, which is very effective method for less-resource language pairs. In this paper, we gradually improve the performance through two different refinements of pivot-context vectors: One is to filter out unhelpful elements of the pivot-context vectors and to revise the values of the vectors through bidirectional translation probabilities estimated by Anymalign and another one is to remove non-noun elements from the original vectors. In this paper, experiments have been conducted on two different language pairs that are bi-directional Korean-Spanish and Korean-French, respectively. The experimental results have demonstrated that our method for high-frequency words shows at least 48.5% at the top 1 and up to 88.5% at the top 20 and for the low-frequency words at least 43.3% at the top 1 and up to 48.9% at the top 20.

  • Aerial objects are more challenging to segment than normal objects, which are usually smaller and have less textural detail. In the process of segmentation, target objects are easily omitted and misdetected, which is problematic. To alleviate these issues, we propose local aggregation feature pyramid networks (LAFPNs) and pyramid integrated context modules (PICMs) for aerial object segmentation. First, using an LAFPN, while strengthening the deep features, the extent to which low-level features interfere with high-level features is reduced, and numerous dense and small aerial targets are prevented from being mistakenly detected as a whole. Second, the PICM uses global information to guide local features, which enhances the network's comprehensive understanding of an entire image and reduces the missed detection of small aerial objects due to insufficient texture information. We evaluate our network with the MS COCO dataset using three categories: airplanes, birds, and kites. Compared with Mask R-CNN, our network achieves performance improvements of 1.7%, 4.9%, and 7.7% in terms of the AP metrics for the three categories. Without pretraining or any postprocessing, the segmentation performance of our network for aerial objects is superior to that of several recent methods based on classic algorithms.

  • Various biological molecules naturally existing in diversified species including fungi, bacteria, and bacteriophage have functionalities for DNA binding and processing. The biological molecules have been recently actively engineered for use in customized genome editing of mammalian cells as the molecule-encoding DNA sequence information and the underlying mechanisms how the molecules work are unveiled. Excitingly, multiple novel methods based on the newly constructed artificial molecular tools have enabled modifications of specific endogenous genetic elements in the genome context at efficiencies that are much higher than that of the conventional homologous recombination based methods. This minireview introduces the most recently spotlighted molecular genome engineering tools with their key features and ongoing modifications for better performance. Such ongoing efforts have mainly focused on the removal of the inherent DNA sequence recognition rigidity from the original molecular platforms, the addition of newly tailored targeting functions into the engineered molecules, and the enhancement of their targeting specificity. Effective targeted genome engineering of mammalian cells will enable not only sophisticated genetic studies in the context of the genome, but also widely-applicable universal therapeutics based on the pinpointing and correction of the disease-causing genetic elements within the genome in the near future.
