  • In this paper, the nonlinear structural analysis for the composite structure of the spent nuclear fuel disposal container and the 50cm thick bentonite buffer is carried out to predict the collapse of the container while the sudden rock movement of 10cm is applied on the composite structure. This sudden rock movement is anticipated by the earthquake etc. at a deep underground. Horizontal symmetric rock movement is assumed in this structural analysis. Elastoplastic material model is adopted. Drucker-Prager yield criterion is used for the material yield prediction of the bentonite buffer and von-Mises yield criterion is used for the material yield prediction of the container(cast iron insert, copper outer shell and lid and bottom). Analysis results show that even though very large deformations occur beyond the yield point in the bentonite buffer, the container structure still endures elastic small strains and stresses below the yield strength. Hence, the 50cm thick bentonite buffer can protect the container safely against the 10cm sudden rock movement by earthquake etc.. Analysis results also show that bending deformations occur in the container structure due to the shear deformation of the bentonite buffer. The elastoplastic nonlinear structural analysis for the composite structure of the container and the bentonite buffer is performed using the finite element analysis code, NISA.

  • As the rapid increase of the container trade, most of the container terminals strive to improve the container handling productivity. Therefore, they consider to find efficient operating strategies and to introduce new container handling facilities. In terms of equipment, there are a variety of types of quay cranes. Single-lift crane operates only one container regardless of size and twin-lift crane operates two 20' containers or one 40' container simultaneously. Tandem crane, recently introduced, can operate four 20' containers or two 40' containers simultaneously. In this paper, we propose the mathematical model and the solution procedure of the ship loading scheduling problem for the tandem crane.

  • Flap type wave-maker, wave absorber, motion measuring equipment and related instruments were newly installed at Ship Experimental Towing Tank, Ship Research Station, KIMM. The model tests in regular head and following waves were successfully carried out and the motion and wave loads in regular and long crested irregular waves were calculated for a container ship model which was adopted as the hull form for the comparative calculations of the ITTC Seakeeping Committee. The results of model tests show good agreement with calculated results and the latter are generally in good agreement with the results of the comparative calculations.

  • Container volume is a very important factor in accurate evaluation of port performance, and accurate prediction of effective port development and operation strategies is essential. However, it is difficult to improve the accuracy of container volume prediction due to rapid changes in the marine industry. To solve this problem, it is necessary to analyze the impact on port performance using the Internet of Things (IoT) and apply it to improve the competitiveness and efficiency of Busan Port. Therefore, this study aims to develop a prediction model for predicting the future container volume of Busan Port, and through this, focuses on improving port productivity and making improved decision-making by port management agencies. In order to predict port container volume, this study introduced the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) technique of a machine learning model. XGBoost stands out of its higher accuracy, faster learning and prediction than other algorithms, preventing overfitting, along with providing Feature Importance. Especially, XGBoost can be used directly for regression predictive modelling, which helps improve the accuracy of the volume prediction model presented in previous studies. Through this, this study can accurately and reliably predict container volume by the proposed method with a 4.3% MAPE (Mean absolute percentage error) value, highlighting its high forecasting accuracy. It is believed that the accuracy of Busan container volume can be increased through the methodology presented in this study.

  • Recently, very large container ships are emerging as shipment of containers is expected to rapidly increase near future. A possibility of roll resonant motion in a seaway is expected to noticeably increase for large container ships of which capacity ranges 8,000 to 15,000 TEU due to relatively wide breadth and shallow draft comparing to conventional container ships. In this paper, a design and performance evaluation of a fin stabilizer for a 9,000 TEU container ship is carried out. The weak opposed control concept is adopted for the design. Time domain simulations and model tests are performed for performance evaluation. The design prediction, the model tests and the simulations show generally good agreements.

  • The purpose of present study is to find an appropriate hull shape of a container ship which can operate along the coast and through canals. A 200TEU class container ship is designed with dimensional modifications of an existing 140TEU container ship which is a domestic coastwise vessel. For the fore-body shape including bulbous bow. additional modification is done by changing the sectional area curve and frameline shape using the data of series resistance test. The model tests are performed in the towing tank to measure total resistance sinkage and trim of the model. And a finite-difference method based on MAC method is utilized to analyze the flow field around the ships in deep and restricted water. From the result of model test and numerical analysis, the resistance characteristics of the designed hull form are predicted.

  • This paper presents an efficient finite analysis model and a simulation-based reliability analysis method for stowage device system failure of a container crane with respect to lateral load. A quasi-static analysis model is introduced to simulate the nonlinear resistance characteristics and failure of tie-down and stowage pin, which are the main structural stowage devices of a crane. As a reliability analysis method, a subset simulation method is applied considering the uncertainties of later load and mechanical characteristic parameters of stowage devices. An efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is applied to sample random variables. Analysis result shows that the proposed model is able to estimate the probability of failure of crane system effectively which cannot be calculated practically by crude Monte Carlo simulation method.

  • To improve the ship operation in automated container terminals, it is important to schedule different types of handling equipment to operate synchronously. For example, a vehicle with container receiving and lifting capabilities is used to transport containers from a storage yard to a vessel and vice versa, while a triple quay crane (QC) can handle up to three 40-ft containers simultaneously. This paper discusses the manner in which vehicles should be assigned to containers to support such multi-lifts of QCs by using information about the locations and times of deliveries. A mixed-integer programming model is introduced to optimally assign delivery tasks to vehicles. This model considers the constraint imposed by the limited buffer space under each QC. A procedure for converting buffer-space constraints into time window constraints and a heuristic algorithmfor overcoming the excessive computational time required for solving the mathematical model are suggested. A numerical experiment is conducted to compare the objective values and computational times of the heuristic algorithm with those of the optimizing method to evaluate the performance of the heuristic algorithm.

  • In this paper, we focuses on the development of Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy modeling in a nonlinear container crane system. A T-S fuzzy model is characterized by fuzzy "if-then" rules which represent the locally input-output relationship whose consequence part is described by a state space equation as subsystem. The T-S fuzzy model in container cranes first obtains a few number of linear models according to operation conditions and blends these conditions using fuzzy membership functions. Parameters of the membership functions are adjusted by a RCGA to have same dynamic characteristics with nonlinear system of a container crane. Simulations are given to illustrate the performance of T-S fuzzy model.
