  • Fatigue crack in most rails take place by rolling contact between wheel and rail in railway industry. Therefore, it is critical to understand the rolling contact phenomena, especially for the three-dimensional situation. In this paper the steady-state rolling contact problem of KTX wheel and rail (UIC60) has been studied with three-dimensional finite element analysis. The variation of contact pressure and contact stresses on rolling contact surface were obtained using the finite element method. The three-dimensional distribution of contact stresses on the contact surface are investigated. Results show that the distribution of shear stress and contact stress (von Mises) on the contact surface varies rapidly as a result of the variation of stick-slip region. The contact stress at the leading edge is greater than at the trailing edge because of stick and slip phenomena.

  • In this paper, we investigate contact characteristic of wheel-rail interface for rolling stock using the finite element method. Contact stress distribution due to the rail mounting slope is obtained in order to reduce the contact stress. Stress analysis of the rail, firstly, is performed one subjected to elliptical pressure based on Hertz theory. Secondly, we perform stress analysis of the rail subjected to contact stress obtained by this study. Results for the maximum shear stress, its location and the principal shear stress distribution are compared.

  • Various type of rotary unions are widely used to provide fluids between rotating parts. To prevent fluid leakage, most of the rotary unions adopt mechanical seals which is highly reliable but too expensive and complicate. In this paper, a simple lip seal system made of PTFE is adopted in designing of a compact rotary union. Using MARC, the behavior characteristics of lip seal are investigated for seal mounting process, and obtained variations of contact pressure distribution and contact width with interferences and fluid pressures. The results showed that contact width are increased with interference and pressure. The maximum contact pressure are also increased up to a certain interference and pressure, however, then decreased. The numerical methods and results can be applied in designing and performance improvement of lip seal adopted rotary union, and further extensive studies are required.

  • Brakes are one of the important safety parts in cars. The requirements of brakes in performance, in comfort, and working lifetime are high. This paper presents the static analysis on the stress and temperature of a automotive drum brake. The particular interest is the distribution of the contact pressure between brake lining and drum. The problems to be solved are the effects of friction coefficient, actuation force, temperature, and brake component's stiffness. The contact problem includes friction, and is solved using the ABAQUS.

  • The inside contact characteristics in abrasive belt drives were investigated analytically and experimentally for (1) driver pulley contact wheel and (2) driven pulley contact wheel. The concentrated contact forces in the grinding zone divided the entire belt-pulley contact are by three distinct areas and the tangential friction forces in the active areas caused the normal forces to change, which resulted in the different belt force distribution compared with those of the ordinary flat belt drives. The experimental results for the normal pressure (belt tension) distribution were in good agreement with the theoretical results.

  • We spend about 40% of lifte time on a bed and seek how such amount of time is spent comfort. Bed comfort has been pursuited. The pressure distributions on a bed by body pressure has been considered as one of the most important factors of bed comfort. This study is to quantify the subjective assessment by the body pressure distribution and develop the objective evaluation method of bed comfort. A new measurement system for body pressure on a bed was developed in this study. The thin film pressure sensor (FSR: Force Sensing Resistor) of an elastomer-type was used to prevent the distortion of contact pressure. The pressure distribution is measured by FSR and displayed on the monitor by color-coded contour patterns. Some of the bed test results were described. And the relations between body pressure distribution and bed comfort were evaluated.

  • The purpose of this study is to show pressure distribution of the bearing girder in large vessel engine and to consider finite elements analysis using the pressure distribution. Various kinds of the exciting forces act on a bearing girder. And at the same time, it is necessary to consider the contact between a crankshaft and a bearing girder because a bearing girder supports a crankshaft. However it is to need the computer resource with much time if we apply the contact element to a complex solid model and perform a repeated analysis. Thus we have accomplished a contact analysis in the simplistic finite element model of the bearing girder. After that we take a pressure distribution, and apply this to actual finite element model and accomplish finite element analysis. The result of stresses and strains has been produced using superposition method. The concept of superposition method is to find the resultant deflection of several loads acting on a member as the sum of contributions of individual loads. The results were compared with measured results and were verified to be accurate. Resulting analyzed strain favorably coincides with measured strain. The experiment result justifies this paper method.

  • Pressure distributions of the soft tissue are valuable for understanding and diagnosing the disease characteristics due to the mechanical loading. Our system measures dynamic pressure distributions in real-time under the general PC environment, and analyzes various foot disorders. Main features of the developed system are as follows: (1) With the resistive pressure sensor matrix of 40${\times}$40 cells, the data is sent to the PC with the maximum sampling rate of 40 frames/sec. (2) For each frame, contact area, pressure and force are analyzed by graphic forms. Thus, various biomechanical parameters are easily determined at specific areas of interests. (3) A certain stance phase can be chosen for the analysis from the continuous walking, and the detailed biomechanical analysis can be done according to an arbitrary line dividing anterior/posterior or medial/lateral plantar areas. (4) The center of pressure (COP) is calculated and traced from the pressure distribution data, and thus the movement of the COP is monitored in detail. A few experiments revealed that our system successfully measured the dynamic plantar distribution during normal walking.
