  • After allergic contact dermatitis elicitated by Dinitrochlorobenzene(DNCB) treatment, ICR female mice administered Yunkyopaedocksangamibang(YPGM) extract were observed to investigate the effect of YPGM on allergic contact dermatitis. This study investigated that contact hypersensitivity assay, abdominal skin morphologic changes including mast cells. At contact hypersensitivity assay, the right ear swelling in YPGM group were probability decreased than DNCB group. At observation of abdominal skin morphologic change, the infiltration of lymphocyte, lymphocyte insertion to epithelium, enlarged capillary, angiogenesis, and damages of epithelium as cytoplasmic vacuolation and enlarge of inter cellular space in YPGM were diminished than DNCB group. The number of mast cell was increased both DNCB and YPGM group. The shape of mast cell in DNCB group was mainly appeared degranulated type, but granulated type in YPGM group. The number of serotonin positive cell was increased both DNCB and YPGM group. The shape of serotonin positive cell in DNCB group was mainly appeared degranulated type, but granulated type in YPGM group. As results indicated that the YPGM extract administration work on the mitigation of skin damages in mouse with allergic contact dermatitis.

  • Wogonin (5,7-dihydroxy-8-methoxyflavone) is a down-regulator of cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, contributing to anti-inflammatory activity in vivo. For further characterization of modulatory activity on ploinflammatory gene expression in vivo, the effect of wogonin was examined in this experiment using animal models of skin inflammation. By topical application, wogonin inhibited an edematic response as well as ploinflammatory gene expression against contact dermatitis In mice. Wogonin inhibited ear edema ($19.4-22.6\%$) at doses of $50-200\;{\mu}g$/ear and down-regulated interleukin-$1{\beta}$ induction ($23.1\%$) at $200{\mu}g$/ear in phenol-induced simple irritation. Wogonin ($2{\times}50-2{\times}200{\mu}g$/ear) also inhibited edematic response ($51.2-43.9\%$) and down-regulated ploinflammatory gene expression of cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin-$1{\beta}$, interferon-$\gamma$, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and inducible nitric oxide synthase with some different sensitivity against picryl chloride-induced delayed hypersensitivity reaction. All these results clearly demonstrate that wogonin is a down-regulator of ploinflammatory gene expression in animal models of skin inflammation. Therefore, wogonin may have potential for a new anti-inflammatory agent against skin inflammation.

  • Antiseptics are substances that kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms when applied to living tissue. They must be effective against microoranisms but must also retain their activity in presence of body fluids without being harmful locally or systemically. Among many antiseptics. $Betadine^{(R)}$ has been widely used because of its low toxicity and high germicidal efficacy. We reported 2 cases of allergic contact dermatitis to $Betadine^{(R)}$ in surgical patients. They had eczematous eruption along the $Betadine^{(R)}$ applying sites. Patch tests with $Betadine^{(R)}$ confirmed the diagnosis.

  • Objective : To study the effect of the Insamyangyoung-tang(ISYT) extract on the skin barrier function, the skin pH, skin humidity and transepidermal water loss(TEWL) were measured and histological changes were observed in DNCB(2,4-dinitrochloro-benzen)-induced contact dermatitis(CD) hairless mice. Methods : The male hairless mice were divided into three groups. Each group consisted of 15 mice. The normal group which had acetone- olive oil applied. The control group which had intentionally induced CD by DNCB and it was fed normal saline orally. The ISYT group which had intentionally induced CD by DNCB and it was fed ISYT extract orally for 7 days. The three groups were checked 24h, 48h and 72h later after inducing CD, and the skin pH, skin humidity and TEWL were observed. Tissue samples were taken, and damage to the epithelial cell was observed. Statistical analysis was performed by using one way-ANOVA: significance was set at p values less than 5% (p<0.05). Results : ISYTextract efficiently maintained the pH balance, it kept the skin humidity at a normal level, and it inhibited TEWL of the DNCB-induced CD hairless mouse. The damage to the epithelium was decreased and the regeneration power of the skin was increased in the ISYT group. Conclusion : Insamyangyoung-tang has a good effect on the skin barrier function of DNCB induced contact dermatitis hairless mice.
