  • The Korean society faces a new issue of accepting foreign workers. Foreign labors in construction industry reached about 400,000 recently. Thus they have become one of the essential resources to fill up insufficient labor supplies in construction industry. And it is important how to manage foreign labors efficiently. However there are few studies focused on this subject. Purpose of this study is to research productivity of foreign labors in the domestic construction site. So investigate the value of foreign labors. Also this study forecast elements effect on foreign labors productivity in the construction industry. And research what element is more important to improve productivity and what element is more difficult to manage. In the result, this study is expected to prospect effective method of foreign labor's management in the domestic construction industry, so contribute to utilize foreign labors more efficiently.

  • The Korean society, which faces a new issue of foreign labores, is actively conducing safety consciousness of foreign labors. Foreign labors of domestic industry reached about 360,000 recently. it has become the essential resources to fill up insufficient labor in construction industry. Although most foreign labors participate in safety education well and understand its object, some foreign labors have negative recognition of it. Some foreign labors well comprehend the importance of safety facilities but think those unnecessary. Based on these results, this research pointed out the need to review training manuals, the development of educational programs, improvement of educational facilities to improve safety education of construction, and finally to discussed these issues.

  • The intention of this study is to analyze safety consciousness of construction labors in Gawang-Ju region. According to Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency, the rate of disaster in construction industry is very high comparing with other fields. Most of all, the consciousness of construction labors is very important because accidents are caused from it mainly. For this reason, it is necessary to recognize safety consciousness of labors who directly work in construction field. For decreasing the rate of disaster in construction, I examined and analyzed safety consciousness of construction labors and then, groped improvement of safety activity. Finally, this study deducted improvement of safety activities and management.

  • The use of foreign labors was inevitable at the construction site in Korea. Most construction companies are being used them in the workplace due to the cheap labor, but their work ability are insufficient as much as Korean labors. In this paper is expected to confirm the foreign labors' employment conditions and study to analyze the changing of foreign labors' work ability.

  • Recently, many high-rise buildings have been constructed, and are under construction. And a high-rise building with more than 100 floors is under planning. From site logistics management point of view, it is very important to manage vertical transportation of resource (e.g., material, equipment and construction labors) in high-rise building construction. The higher the building is constructed, the more important it is to manage for vertical transportation of it. In case of labors, vertical movement needs longer time in high-rise building construction than in low-rise. This results in low productivity and work efficiency of the construction. Therefore, this study presents a process of a vertical movement plan for labors using discrete-event simulation. And then the process applies to MT 130 project, which is a virtual high-rise building construction project.

  • Wage is a very important issue not only for the workers' current living but also for the future laboring landscape. As of 2014, it is reported that about 290,000 workers suffer from delay in payment of wage. The construction industry is particularly labor-intensive, which implies that delay in payment of wage is a serious problem. Despite this fact, in terms of the delayed payment of wage most studies have been conducted on the improvement of a system to resolve delayed payment in exclusion of labor workers' awareness and thinking. Thus, the purpose of this study is to understand construction labor' awareness and analyze the effectiveness of the resolution step of the delayed payment of wage based on construction labors' awareness. In the research result, more than 30 percent of all construction labors and managers are never aware of the settlement procedure of the delayed payment, and it appears that the resolution step system needs to be greatly improved. In conclusion, it is expected that this study will be utilized as fundamental data for the settlement procedure of the delayed payment, and the influence of delayed payment on construction labors' safety behavior and productivity should be further studied in the future.

APPLICATION OF WIFI-BASED INDOOR LOCATION MONITORING SYSTEM FOR LABOR TRACKING IN CONSTRUCTION SITE - A CASE STUDY in Guangzhou MTR

  • Safety is a big issue in the construction sites. For safe and secure management, tracking locations of construction resources such as labors, materials, machineries, vehicles and so on is important. The materials, machineries and vehicles could be controlled by computer, whereas the movement of labors does not have fixed pattern. So, the location and movement of labors need to be monitored continuously for safety. In general, Global Positioning System(GPS) is an opt solution to obtain the location information in outside environments. But it cannot be used for indoor locations as it requires a clear Line-Of-Sight(LOS) to satellites Therefore, indoor location monitoring system could be a convenient alternative for environments such as tunnel and indoor building construction sites. This paper presents a case study to investigate feasibility of Wi-Fi based indoor location monitoring system in construction site. The system is developed by using fingerprint map of gathering Received Signal Strength Indication(RSSI) from each Access Point(AP). The signal information is gathered by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, which are attached on a helmet of labors to track their locations, and is sent to server computer. Experiments were conducted in a shield tunnel construction site at Guangzhou, China. This study consists of three phases as follows: First, we have a tracking test in entrance area of tunnel construction site. This experiment was performed to find the effective geometry of APs installation. The geometry of APs installation was changed for finding effective locations, and the experiment was performed using one and more tags. Second, APs were separated into two groups, and they were connected with LAN cable in tunnel construction site. The purpose of this experiment was to check the validity of group separating strategy. One group was installed around the entrance and the other one was installed inside the tunnel. Finally, we installed the system inner area of tunnel, boring machine area, and checked the performance with varying conditions (the presence of obstacles such as train, worker, and so on). Accuracy of this study was calculated from the data, which was collected at some known points. Experimental results showed that WiFi-based indoor location system has a level of accuracy of a few meters in tunnel construction site. From the results, it is inferred that the location tracking system can track the approximate location of labors in the construction site. It is able to alert the labors when they are closer to dangerous zones like poisonous region or cave-in..

A Study on the Pre-fabrication of Three-story Column Re-bars for Saving Construction Time of High-rise Buildings (초고층 건물 공기단축을 위한 기둥철근 3개층 선조립공법에 관한 연구)

  • A high-rise building construction in Korea has some problems in engineering, construction and management technologies although the high-rise building construction is recently booming. In addition, the lack of skilled construction labors is increasing, so the development for methods is needed to reduce the labors by prefabrication and mechanization. A re-bar work is one of very important works with regard to cost and schedule management in the high-rise building construction. Nevertheless, the re-bar work has some problems that it is needed many re-bars for joints linking and much time for lifting due to high-rise buildings, and it is difficult to level the skill of labors. So, in this study, the pre-fabrication of three-story height in column re-bars is proposed and the results of an implementation are analyzed and explored by a case study. As the results of case study, the pre-fabrication of three-story heights in column re-bars could reduce the cost in the re-bar work and accelerate the time in the structural frame work. In addition, the pre-fabrication of three-story height in column re-bars could solve the problems such as the waste of many re-bars for joints linking, and the lack of the skilled labors.

An Improvement Plan and Analysis on Employment Realities of Foreign Construction Workers under the Employment Permit System (고용허가제 도입에 따른 외국인근로자의 고용실태 분석 및 개선방안)

  • Recently there has been a trend of hiring more foreign labors in the Korean construction sites after the introduction of the government policy for foreign workers since 2007, called Employment Permit System(EPS). With the trend in the sites, the skilled and unskilled foreign workers would have become a main resource in the construction site workforce. This study aims to analyzing the effectiveness and the reality of working status for the foreign workforce. In doing so, both mail questionnaire survey and face to face interview with site managers and foreign labors in 38 apartment construction sites around Seoul region have been performed. The results of survey has been compared to the former research, which has been done for foreign labors hired under the old government policy, called Industrial Trainee System. This study found that there still exist many problems in reality of utilizing foreign workers in the sites, and proposed various recommendations for the effective use of foreign labors in the Korean construction industry.

  • Increasing wages and decreasing skilled labors are problems awaiting solution. The development of automatic technologies contributes to accelerating the one of construction automation. Thus, this study is to suggest the way to develop the automated building construction system base on one performed in Japan in order to solve urgent problems of construction industry in Korea. Therefore interviews and questionnaires were performed based on experts who work for the automated building construction system field and analyzed through analytic hierarchy process. In doing so, it was the most important factor to develop a branch of automatic, mechanical or machine technologies for the automated building construction system. Especially the study indicated the importance of the technologies to substitute skilled labors such as a robot. This research could contribute to developing the automated building construction which is very unique and suitable for construction industry in Korea.
