  • The methods for estimating in-situ hydraulic conductivity ($k_{hp}$) and coefficient of consolidation ($c_{hp}$) in the horizontal direction from piezocone penetration and dissipation test results have been investigated using test results at two sites in Saga, Japan. At the two sites the laboratory values of hydraulic conductivity ($k_v$) and coefficient of consolidation ($c_v$) in the vertical direction are also available. Comparing $k_{hp}$ with $k_v$ and $c_{hp}$ with $k_v$ values, suitable methods for estimating $k_{hp}$ and $c_{hp}$ values are recommended. For the two sites, where $k_{hp}{\approx}k_v$ and $c_{hp}{\approx}2c_v$. It is suggested that the estimated values of $k_{hp}$ and $c_{hp}$ can be used in engineering design.

  • This paper is results of experimental research on the effect of application of similarity related to permeability of soil on the consolidation behavior as centrifuge modeling of consolidation is performed with the centrifuge model facility. In this research, the permeability of soil was controlled by changing the viscosity of porewater as the mixed water with glycerin was used during the centrifuge model experiments. The effect of drainage path on consolidation was investigated by installing the vertical drains. A serise of centrifuge model tests with conditions of single vertical and radial horizontal drainage were carried out. Kaolinite and Jumunjin standard sand were used as soft clay and surcharges respectively during tests. For testing condition of single vertical drainage considering similarity of permeability, it was found that consolidation with mixed porewater with glycerin was delayed in comparisons sons with test results with water only. For conditions of horizontal drainage with vertical drains, a low permeability by changing the viscosity of pore water resulted in delayed degree of consolidation at an initial stage of consolidation. But, it predicted not much differences in settlement as long as the consolidation time was sufficiently long enough to finish consolidation. Consequently, it was found that similarity in permeability should be considered to be critical for the case of centrifuge model experiments related to consolidation with long drainage path.

  • Geotextile tube technology has been perceived as an economical solution for liquid sludge treatment, and analyzing its consolidation behavior is necessary to be able to evaluate the dewatering capabilities of large geotextile tubes filled with contaminated soil, tailings, sewage sludge, and so on. The objectives of this study are to present a method that can adequately convey the consolidation behavior of geotextile tubes filled with sewage sludge, and to investigate the effects of various geotextile tube consolidation parameters. In this study, variable coefficients of consolidation are utilized to analyze the consolidation process of geotextile tubes filled with sewage sludge. The consolidation solution was verified by comparing the measured and predicted data from a hanging bag test conducted in the literature. After verifying the proposed solution, the consolidation parameters of a geotextile tube composed of a woven polypropylene outer layer and a non-woven polypropylene layer filled sewage sludge were obtained. Using the obtained parameters, the consolidation behavior of a large-scale composite geotextiles tube was predicted.

  • Evaluation of permeability and coefficient of consolidation of clayey sand is critical to analyze ground stability or environmental problems such as diffusion and dispersion in groundwater flow. Permeability tests using a flexible wall permeameter were performed to derive the coefficient of consolidation and permeability of reconstituted soil samples with various mixing ratios of kaolin clays and two different types of sands, Jumunjin sand and Ottawa sand. The test results indicated that coefficient of consolidation and permeability in log scale have linear relationships with clay contents in low clay mixing ratio. It is also recognized that coefficient of consolidation and permeability of sand and clay mixture are also dependent on the soil structure.

  • This study presented a new method for evaluating the coefficient of consolidation by using inflection point method which was based on the fact that time factor, T corresponding to the inflection point of a semi-logarithmic plot of a time curve is fixed and equals to T = 0.405 at 70.03% consolidation. In the proposed method, as the next load increment is applied as soon as the inflection point is confirmed, the time required to identify the inflection point can be shortened. Thus, the coefficient of consolidation may be easily evaluated. The time required to complete the testing using this rapid consolidation method could be as low as 0.5~9 hours compared with 1 or 2 weeks in the case of the conventional consolidation test. For this study, we designed settlement equipment for normalization of test samples. In test results, the factors of consolidation agreed with undisturbed samples results.

  • Centrifuge test was conducted to simulate the effects of consolidation settlement of capped contaminated marine sediment. A fluorescent dye was used to monitor the movement of pore water through the cap layer. Dye tracer study clearly showed the consolidation induced advective transport of contaminants. Thus, the capping layer must be appropriately designed to reduce the effects of consolidation induced advective transport. The results from the centrifuge test were compared to predictions made by the Primary consolidation, Secondary compression, and Desiccation of Dredged Fill (PSDDF) computer program, which can qualitatively estimate the consolidation settlement of capped marine sediment. Although PSDDF approximated closely the secondary compression in the centrifuge test (i.e., compare data points from 18 to 25 prototype years), the maximum deviation between centrifuge test result and PSDDF prediction was 20 % about prototype time 6 years. Thus, designers should utilize PSDDF consolidation settlement results with caution.

  • The most popular consolidation tester is a standard consolidatiion tester, which performs consolidation using the step load weight. However this apparatus is used to obtain only the vertical consolidation coefficient. Therefore the purpose of this study is to develope the horizontal consolidation cell for a horizaontal consolidation coefficient. Various size of tests have been peroformed to investigate the effect of scale effect. From the test results, it has turned out that this horizontal consolidation cell has a good function for a horizontal consolidation coefficient.

  • In order to analyze effects of strain rate on consolidation characteristics of Busan clay, a series of constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation tests with different strain rate and incremental loading tests (ILT) were performed. From experimental test results on Busan clay, it was found that the preconsolidation pressure was dependent on the corresponding strain rate occurring during consolidation process. Also, consolidation curves normalized with respect to preconsolidation pressure gave a unique stress-strain curve. Coefficient of consolidation and permeability estimated from CRS test had a tendency to converge to a certain value at normally consolidated range regardless of strain rate. An increase in excess pore pressure was observed after the end of loading without change of total stress on the incremental loading test, which phenomenon is called Mandel-Cryer effect. It was also found that rapid generation of excess pore pressure took place due to collapse of soil structure as effective stress approached to preconsolidation pressure.

  • In this research, the ground with smeared zone was reconstructed using the large consolidation test apparatus. And the reconstituted kaolinite samples at different locations were retrieved for the oedometer test. From the oedometer test results the permeability- void ratio-effective stress behavior was investigated. Based on the experimental analysis, spatial differences of permeability according to the drainage distance by both smear and radial drainage consolidation reduced as the consolidation proceeds and eventually disappeared in normally consolidated region. And the spatial variation of permeability by radial drainage consolidation showed larger differences in smaller extent than the spatial variation of permeability by smear.

  • In this study, it was to investigate the possibility to use the converts slag, by product in producing steel as a substitute material with sand that is used fur a civil construction materials, in developing techniques to use converts slag to improve soft clay ground. To do this, it was investigated the physical and mechanical properties of the converts slag as a civil construction material. For this, cylindrical cell consolidation with a single vertical drains and large scale soil box test were performed. Through large scale soil box test, the applicability of the converts slag to the present vertical drain techniques which is dependent on sand and plastic drains was studied. As a result of that, it was found that the shape of inserted drains was maintained after completing a consolidation process of a soft clay with slag drains. In addition, we could find that the slag drains showed the similar results with sand drains in soft clay by analyzing the effect of acceleration of consolidation.
