Stud shear connectors are the most commonly used shear connectors: up to 22mm studs are usually used in steel-concrete composite structures. To expand the current design codes for stud connectors, large studs with a diameter of more than 25mm should be investigated. Through push-out tests on large stud shear connectors that transcend the limitation of current design codes, fatigue behavior was investigated and comparisons with design equations performed. The shear stiffness of the connectors in elastic range was evaluated through shear tests on 25mm, 27mm, and 30mm studs and compared with those from static tests. The fatigue behavior of large studs was discussed in terms of residual slip and load-slip curves. The initiation of fatigue cracks in the welding part could be detected through the history of displacement range. Test results showed that the design fatigue endurance of S-N curves in current design codes could be applied to large stud shear connector.

In steel-concrete composite beams, to improve the cracking resistance of the concrete slab in the hogging moment region, a new type of connector in the interface, named uplift-restricted and slip-permitted screw-type (URSP-S) connector has been proposed. This paper focuses on the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams with URSP-S connectors. A total of three beam specimens including a simply supported beam with URSP-S connectors and two continuous composite beams with different connectors arrangements were designed and tested. More specifically, one continuous composite beam was equipped with URSP-S connectors in negative moment region and traditional shear studs in other regions. For comparison, the other one was designed with only traditional shear studs. The failure modes, crack evolution process, ultimate capacities, strain responses at different locations as well as the interface slip of the three tested specimens were measured and evaluated in-depth. Based on the experimental study, the research findings indicate that the larger slip deformation is allowed while using URSP-S connectors. Meanwhile, the tensile stress reduces and the cracking resistance of the concrete slab improves accordingly. In addition, the overall stiffness and strength of the composite beam become slightly lower than those of the composite beam using traditional shear studs. Moreover, the arrangement suggestion of URSP-S connectors in the composite beam is discussed in this paper for its practical design and application.
In the case of seismic-resistant composite dual moment resisting and eccentrically braced frames, the current design practice is to avoid the disposition of shear connectors in the expected plastic zones, and consequently to consider a symmetric moment or shear plastic hinges, which occur only in the steel beam or link. Even without connectors, the real behaviour of the hinge may be different from the symmetric assumption, since the reinforced concrete slab is connected to the steel element close to the hinge locations, and also due to contact friction between the concrete slab and the steel element. The paper presents the results and conclusions of experimental tests on composite portal eccentrically braced frames and beam-to-column moment-resisting joints, carried out within the CEMSIG Research Centre of the Politehnica University of Timisoara, in order to check the validity of the assumption stated above. Reference steel and composite specimens with and without connectors in the plastic zones have been tested under monotonic and cyclic seismic type loading.
The interaction between steel tube and concrete core is the key issue for understanding the behavior of concrete-filled steel tube columns (CFTs). This study investigates the force transfer by natural bond or by mechanical shear connectors and the interaction between the steel tube and the concrete core under three types of loading. Two and three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models are developed to study the force transfer between steel tube and concrete core. The nonlinear finite element program ABAQUS is used. Material and geometric nonlinearities of concrete and steel are considered in the analysis. The damage plasticity model provided by ABAQUS is used to simulate the concrete material behavior. Comparisons between the finite element analyses and own experimental results are made to verify the finite element models. A good agreement is observed between the numerical and experimental results. Parametric studies using the numerical models are performed to investigate the effects of diameterto-thickness ratio, uniaxial compressive strength of concrete, length of shear connectors, and the tensile strength of shear connectors.
In this research the effect of high strength concrete (HSC) on shear capability of the channel shear connectors (CSC) in the steel concrete composite floor system was estimated experimentally and analytically. The push-out test was carried out for assessing the accurateness of the proposed model (nonlinear and finite element model) for the test specimens. A parametric analysis was conducted for predicting the shear capacity of the connectors (CSC) in the HSC. Eight push-out specimens of different sizes with different strength levels were tested under the monotonic loading system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) of Canada for analysing the loading abilities of the CSC in the HSC. Using the experimental tests results and verifying the finite element results with them, it was then confirmed by the extended parametric studies that the Canadian Design Code was less efficient for predicting the capacity of the CSC in the HSC. Hence, an alternative equation was formulated for predicting the shear capacity of these connectors during the inclusion of HSC for designing the codes.

Electric handbike can be easily detachable to various sizes of manual wheelchair and the elderly and people with disabilities can use them easily. Therefore, connectors used for coupling between the handbike and manual wheelchair must secure structural stability for occupant safety. However, related research is rare. The aim of this study is to find the connector with highly structural stability by comparing static and dynamic mechanical characteristics among three typical connectors(a snatch lock, a slide latch, and a fastener) by computational simulations. To perform static and dynamic simulation, we referred to durability test based on Korean Standards and then calculated mechanical stresses in connectors. The results showed that the snatch lock addressed the lowest von-mises stress under the same mechanical condition. Therefore when using the combination of a handbike and a wheelchair, we concluded that the snatch lock is considered as the structurally stable connector to structural stability and usability.

The use of steel-concrete composite members has been significantly increased as they have the advantages of the reduction of cross sectional areas, excellent ductility against earthquake loadings and a longer life span than typical steel frame members. The increased use of composite members requires an intensive study on the shear resistance evaluation of stud connectors in high strength concrete. However, the applicability of currently available standards is limited to composite members with normal and lightweight strength concrete. In this paper, push-out tests were performed on 24 specimens to investigate the structural behavior and shear resistance of stud connectors in high strength concrete. Test parameters include the existence of shear studs, height to diameter ratio of a shear stud, its diameter and concrete cover thickness. A shear resistance equation of stud connectors is proposed through a linear regression analysis based on the test results. Its accuracy is compared with those of existing shear resistance equations for studs in normal and lightweight concrete.
This paper studies shear and tensile behaviors of headed stud connectors in double skin composite (DSC) structure. Firstly, 11 push-out tests and 11 tensile tests were performed to investigate the ultimate shear and tensile behaviors of headed stud in DSC shear wall, respectively. The main parameters investigated in this test program were height and layout of headed stud connectors. The test results reported the representative failure modes of headed studs in DSC structures subjected to shear and tension. The shear-slip and tension-elongation behaviors of headed studs in DSC structures were also reported. Influences of different parameters on these shear-slip and tension-elongation behaviors of headed studs were discussed and analyzed. Analytical models were also developed to predict the ultimate shear and tensile resistances of headed stud connectors in DSC shear walls. The developed analytical model incorporated the influence of the dense layout of headed studs in DSC shear walls. The validations of analytical predictions against 22 test results confirmed the accuracy of developed analytical models.
To achieve a rational detail of the girder-abutment joints in composite integral bridges, and validate the performance of the joints with perfobond connectors, this paper proposes two innovative types of I-shaped steel girder-concrete abutment joints with perfobond connectors intended for the most of bearing capacity and the convenience of concrete pouring. The major difference between the two joints is the presence of the top flange inside the abutments. Two scaled models were investigated with tests and finite element method, and the damage mechanism was revealed. Results show that the joints meet design requirements no matter the top flange exists or not. Compared to the joint without top flange, the initial stiffness of the one with top flange is higher by 7%, and the strength is higher by 50%. The moment decreases linearly in both types of the joints. At design loads, perfobond connectors take about 70% and 50% of the external moment with and without top flange respectively, while at ultimate loads, perfobond connectors take 53% and 26% of the external moment respectively. The ultimate strengths of the reduced sections are suggested to be taken as the bending strengths of the joints.

In response to the sustainability requirements set in the EU Commission's "Green Deal" towards reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions, it is estimated that the structural design for deconstruction is going to contribute considerably to the sustainable development of the built environment. The demountability of multi-material structural systems basically depends on the shear connectors used in the structural system. This paper focuses on a type of demountable injected shear connector with an injected steel-reinforced resin (iSRR) which consists of spherical steel particles embedded in a resin. Its application to steel-to-concrete and steel-to-Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) decks is presented along with its benefits. In parallel, an overview of the experimental and numerical research on the evaluation of the mechanical properties of the demountable bolted connectors with iSRR is discussed. Last, detailed finite element (FE) models and a parametric study are performed to quantify the confinement level of the SRR material influenced by the oversized hole diameter.
