  • A two dimensional finite element model was constructed to analyze the mechanical behavior of four unit fixed partial dentures (FPD) with a 2nd premolar abutment either employing a rigid or nonrigid connector and a 2nd molar abutment(Branemark implant, IMZ implants and natural tooth). Gap elements were used to model the clearance space of the nonrigid connectors and each components of implants. All FPDs with a implant abutment alter the patterns of stress distribution and displacement, but the magnitude of stress in the periodontium was not greater than that of the control. A FPD with rigid connectors induced the smaller stresses in the periodontium than a FPD with a nonrigid connector. A FPD with a Branemark implant exhibited the more desirable mechanical stress states as compared to the IMZ implants with IME or IMC.

  • Fire is one of the environmental parameters affecting the structure causing element internal forces to change, as well as reducing the strength of the materials. One of the common types of floors in tall steel structures is the steel concrete composite slab. Shear connectors are used in steel and concrete composite beam in various shapes also has played significant role in a burning fire event of building with a steel concrete composite beam. The current study has reviewed the effects of temperature raising on the angle connector behavior through the use of push out tests and monotonic static force. The results have shown (1) the ductility of the samples is acceptable based on EC4 standard; (2) temperature raising has reduced the stiffness; (3) the shear ductility increment; and (4) the shear capacity reduction. Also, the amount of angle shear connector resistance has been decreased from 18.5% to 41% at ambient temperature up to $850^{\circ}C$.

  • Contemporary design and construction of steel-concrete composite structures employs the use of prefabricated concrete elements and demountable shear connectors in order to reduce the construction time and costs and enable dismantling of elements for their potential reuse at the end of life of buildings. Bolted shear connector with mechanical coupler is presented in this paper. The connector is assembled from mechanical coupler and rebar anchor, embedded in concrete, and steel bolt, used for connecting steel to concrete members. The behaviour and ultimate resistance of bolted connector with mechanical coupler in wide and narrow members were analysed based on push-out tests and FE analyses conducted in Abaqus software, with focus on concrete edge breakout and bolt shear failure modes. The effect of concrete strength, concrete edge distance and diameter and strength of bolts on failure modes and shear resistance was analysed. It was demonstrated that premature failure by breakout of concrete edge occurs when connectors are located 100 mm or closer from the edge in low-strength and normal-strength reinforced concrete. Furthermore, the paper presents a relatively simple model for hand calculation of concrete edge breakout resistance when bolted connectors with mechanical coupler are used. The model is based on the modification of prediction model used for cast-in and post-installed anchors loaded parallel to the edge, by implementing equivalent influence length of connector with variable diameter. Good agreement with test and FE results was obtained, thus confirming the validity of the proposed method.

  • Stainless steel-concrete composite beam has become an attractive structural form for offshore bridges and iconic high-rise buildings, owing to the superior corrosion resistance and excellent ductility of stainless steel material. In a composite beam, stainless steel shear connectors play an important role by establishing the interconnection between stainless steel beam and concrete slab. To enable the best use of high strength stainless steel shear connectors in composite beams, high strength concrete is recommended. To date, the application of stainless steel shear connectors in composite beams is still very limited due to the lack of research and proper design recommendations. In this paper, a total of seven pushout specimens were tested to investigate the load-slip behaviour of stainless steel shear connectors. A thorough discussion has been made on the differences between stainless steel bolted connectors and welded studs, in terms of the failure modes, load-slip behaviour and ultimate shear resistance. In parallel with the experimental programme, a finite element model was developed in ABAQUS to simulate the behaviour of stainless steel shear connectors, with which the effects of shear connector strength, concrete strength and embedded connector height to diameter ratio (h/d) were evaluated. The obtained experimental and numerical results were analysed and compared with existing codes of practice, including AS/NZS 2327, EN 1994-1-1 and ANSI/AISC 360-16. The comparison results indicated that the current codes need to be improved for the design of high strength stainless steel shear connectors. On this basis, modified design approaches were proposed to predict the shear capacity of stainless steel bolted connectors and welded studs in the composite beams.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution of the natural teeth, the implant, the prosthesis and the supporting tissue according to the types of implant and connection modality in the five-unit fixed partial denture with a implant pier abutment. A Two dimensional stress analysis model was constructed to represent a mandible missing the first and second premolars and first molar. The model contained a canine and second molar as abutment teeth and implant pier abutments with and without stress-absorbing element. Finite element models were created and analyzed using software ANSYS 4.4A for IBM 32bit personal computer. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Implant group, compared to the natural teeth group, showed a maximum principal stress at the superior portion of implants and a stress concentration at :he neck and end portion. 2. Maximum principal stress and maximum Von Mises stress were always lower in the case of rigid connection than nonrigid connection. 3. A cylinder type implant with stress absorbing element and screw type implant were generally similar in the stress distribution pattern. 4. A screw type implant, compared to the cylinder type implant, showed a relatively higher stress concentration at both neck and end portion of it. 5. Load B cases showed higher stress concentration on the posterior abutments in the case of nonrigid connector than rigid connector. 6. A maximum displacement was always lower in the case of rigid connection than nonrigid connection. These results suggest that osseointegrated implant can be used as an intermediate abutment.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution developed in the supporting structures by mandibular distal extension removable partial dentures with 2 different direct retainer designs and with or without indirect retainer and abutment splinting. The examined direct retainers on the second bicuspid abutment tooth were Akers clasp and RPA clasp, the indirect retainer was located on the mesial fossa of the first bicuspid, and the first and second bicuspid were splinted in case of tooth splinting. Total 8 cases were compared and analyzed with 3-dimensional finite element method. 150N were applied vertically on the artificial teeth of the removable partial denture, and then stress distribution patterns were analyzed and compared. The results were as follows : 1. The forces transmitted to the abutment tooth were primarily from the occlusal rests. 2. The abutment tooth was displaced distally when the force was applied. The compressive stress was observed at the distal root surface of the abutment tooth and the tensile stress, at the mesial root surface. 3. The denture base was displaced posteriorly and inferiorly when the force was applied. At the more distal portion of the denture base, the greater displacement was observed. And the anterior portion of the major connector was displaced superiorly. 4. The occlusal rest placed on the distal part of the abutment tooth tended to tip the tooth more posteriorly than did one on the mesial part of that tooth. 5. Severe superior displacement was observed at the anterior portion of the major connector in case of removable partial dentures without indirect retainer. 6. In case of tooth-splinting, the stress was distributed through all the root surface of both abuments. In case of no tooth-splinting, the stress was concentrated on the distal root surface of the primary abutment.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution and the displacement happened to the abutment, the prosthesis, and the surrounding structure according to the location of the nonrigid connector, that is, the keyway in the distal of canine and the mesial of the implant in the three unit fixed partial denture. Two-dimensional finite element model ws constructed and analyzed for the stress distribution and the displacement using software ABAQUS(Ver 5.2 Hibbitt, Karisson & Sorenson, Inc., 1992). After finishing the finite element model, the distribution load of 15kg was applied simultaneously to the all cusp tips of the prosthesis and the concentration load of 10㎏ was applied respectively at the each cusp tip of the prosthesis. The following results were obtained : 1. The amount of displacement of the implant was greater in case of the non-rigid connection than the rigid connection, and the more favorable displacement was shown in case of the IKb than the IKa. 2. Without regard to the connection method, the stress represented at the surrounding bone was similar, and the more favorabel stress distribution was shown in case of IKb. 3. The maximum stress was concentrated at the fastening screw and the neck of implant in all experimental groups, and their stress magnitudes were in the order of IKb, IR, and IKa.
