  • In this article, we consider a vectorial linear connection which is determined by three fixed vector fields. Classifying these vectorial connections, we obtain a new type of generalized statistical manifolds which allow non-zero torsion.

  • This study presents an experimental study of the structural behavior for steel plate-concrete column-to-steel girder connections. Experiments were carried out to investigate the moment-rotation characteristics, failure behavior and ultimate moment capacity of these connections. The results of this experimental study involving three welded moment-resisting connections subjected to cyclic loading are presented. The specimens were fabricated at full scale to evaluate their hysteretic behavior. A description of the test specimens, the details of the joint, the test system and the testing methods are described. The test results showed that the structural behavior of these composite connections was influenced by the connection details.

  • Structural analysis and design of steel frames is usually conducted under the assumption that beam-to-column connections are either fixed or pinned. In reality, each connection possesses a certain rotational stiffness. In this study, structural analysis program is developed, which takes into account the nonlinear behavior of framed structures including flexibility of semi-rigid connections and member geometric nonlinearity. Effective semi-rigid connections for a 6-story unbraced steel frame are suggested and the effect of flexible connections on the behavior of the structure are studied.

  • This paper presents the findings of an investigation carried out to determine the most appropriate connections, in terms of rotational stiffness, to use for the optimum design of cold-formed Zed section sleeve joint purlin system. Experiments and parametric studies were conducted to investigate the effects of geometric variables on the behavior of the sleeve-purlin and cleat-purlin connections of the sleeve joint purlin system. The variables considered were purlin size and thickness, sleeve size, thickness, length and bolt position. The test results were used to verify the empirical expressions, developed herein, employed to determine the rotational stiffness of connections. With the predicted connection stiffness, the most suitable sleeve-purlin and cleat-purlin connections can be selected so as to produce an optimum condition for the sleeve joint purlin system.

  • The seismic performance of six types of weak-axis steel moment connections was investigated through cyclic testing of six full-scale specimens. These weak-axis moment connections were the column-tree type, WUF-B type, FF-W type, WFP type, BFP-B type and DST type weak-axis connections. The testing results showed that each of these weak-axis connection types achieved excellent seismic performance, except the WFP and the WUF-B types. The WFP and WUF-B connections displayed poor seismic performance because a fracture appeared prematurely at the weld joint due to stress concentrations. The column-tree type connection showed the best seismic behavior such that the story drift ratio could reach 5%.

  • In this research, the self-centering effect in precast and prestressed reinforced concrete structures was investigated experimentally. The reinforced concrete beams and columns were precast and connected by post-tensioning tendons passing through the center of the beams as well as the panel zone of the connections. Three beam-to-interior-column connections were constructed to investigate parameters such as beam to column interfaces (steel on steel or plastic on plastic), energy dissipating devices (unbonded buckling restrained steel bars or steel angles) and the spacing of hoops in the panel zone. In addition to the self-centering effect, the shear strength in the panel zone of interior column connections was experimentally and theoretically evaluated, since the panel zone designed by current code provisions may not be conservative enough to resist the panel shear increased by the post-tensioning force.

  • We investigated quench characteristics of superconducting elements connected in series and parallel each other. The serial and parallel connections of superconducting elements causes a difficulty in simultaneous quench due to slight difference between their critical current densities. In other to induce simultaneous quench, we fabricated four type circuits; serially connected circuit before parallel connection, the circuit connected in parallel before serial connection, serially connected circuit before parallel connection with reactors, the circuit connected in Parallel before serial connection with reactors. We confirmed that the simultaneous quenches occurred in serial and parallel connections of superconducting elements using reactors. In addition, the power burden of superconducting elements was smaller than those of serial and parallel connections of superconducting elements without reactors.
