  • Applying rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT), the properties of resonant diffraction gratings under conical light incidence is investigated. The mode vectors pertinent to resonant diffraction under conical mounting vary less with incident angle than those associated with diffraction gratings in classical mounting. Furthermore, as the evanescent diffracted waves drive the leaky modes responsible for the resonance effects, the conical mounting imbues diffraction gratings with larger angular tolerance than their classical counterparts. Based on these concepts, the angular-spectral and wavelength-spectral performance of resonant diffraction gratings in conical and classical mounts by numerical calculations with spectra found for conical incidence are quantified. These results will be useful in various applications demanding resonant diffraction gratings that are efficient and physically sparse.

  • Natural frequency behavior of graphene platelets reinforced composite (GPL-RC) joined truncated conical-cylindrical- conical shells resting on Winkler-type elastic foundation is presented in this paper for the first time. The rule of mixture and the modified Halpin-Tsai approach are applied to achieve the mechanical properties of the structure. Four different graphene platelets patterns are considered along the thickness of the structure such as GPLA, GPLO, GPLX, GPLUD. Finite element procedure according to Rayleigh-Ritz formulation has been used to solve 2D-axisymmetric elasticity equations. Application of 2D axisymmetric elasticity theory allows thickness stretching unlike simple shell theories, and this gives more accurate results, especially for thick shells. An efficient parametric investigation is also presented to show the effects of various geometric variables, three different boundary conditions, stiffness of elastic foundation, dispersion pattern and weight fraction of GPLs nanofillers on the natural frequencies of the joined shell. Results show that GPLO and BC3 provide the most rigidity that cause the most natural frequencies among different BCs and GPL patterns. Also, by increasing the weigh fraction of nanofillers, the natural frequencies will increase up to 200%.

  • Objectives. The standardization of connection between fixture and abutment has not been defined. The success of dental implants was not always depends on connection. However, the connection mechanism is one of the most important things for dental implant treatment success. Most implant systems are very comparable in their design and engineering. They share many common characteristics and have similar strengths and weaknesses. Their significant weaknesses are connection, microgap and the resulting micromovement allowing bacterial contamination and bone loss. In the present study, we investigated the clinical performance of Ankylos implant (conical connection implant) Patients and Methods. The clinical performance of conical connection implant was studied under well-controlled clinical conditions. A total of 133 conical connection implants were placed in 50 patients from April 2005 to March 2006. The mean follow-up loading period of implants which was considered successful was 220$\pm$29 days. We recorded the age, sex, installation site, reason of edentulous region, bone density of installation site, diameter and length of dental implants and periods from installation to uncovering surgery using patients medical chart. Results Four Ankylos implants were lost during pre-loading period. 129 implants provided excellent clinical performance during 220$\pm$29 days on an average. The short-term success rate of this conical connection implant system was 96.99%.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for evaluation of varying stiffness coefficients of tailored conical shells (TCS). Furthermore, a comparison between buckling loads of these shells under axial load with the different fiber path is performed. A circular truncated conical shell subjected to axial compression is taken into account. Three different theoretical path containing geodesic path, constant curvature path and constant angle path has been considered to describe the angle variation along the cone length, along cone generator of a conical shell are offered. In the TCS with the arbitrary fiber path, the thickness and the ply orientation are assumed to be functions of the shell coordinates and influencing stiffness coefficients of the structure. The stiffness coefficients and the buckling loads of shells are calculated basing on classical shells theory (CST) and using finite-element analysis (FEA) software. The obtained results for TCS with arbitrary fiber path, thickness and ply orientation are derived as functions of shell longitudinal coordinate and influencing stiffness coefficients of structures. Furthermore, the buckling loads based on fiber path and ply orientation at the start of tailored fiber get to be different. The extent of difference for tailored fiber with start angle lower than 20 degrees is not significant. The results in this paper show that using tailored fiber placement could be applied for producing conical shells in order to have greater buckling strengths and lower weight. This work demonstrates the use of fiber path definitions for calculated stiffness coefficients and buckling loads of conical shells.

  • Intracavitary brachytherapy combined hypertermin for utero-conical cancer seems to be a promising method for salvage treatments in persistent tumors and inoperable or previously irradiated cervical recurrences. In order to heat the vaginal apex and uterus, powerfull conical antennas which are suitable for afterloading cervical applicator have been designed for use in conjuction with intracavitary radiation therapy. The antennas were constructed with conical conductive material to feed line and the effective lenght were designed proportional to microwave length, Power deposition profiles of 2450 MHz of conical antennas were studied in both phantom models and muscle tissue and compared to those of commonly used dipole antenna. Improvement of the heating pattern was found in both phantom and muscle tissue. The heating pattern produced by the conical antenna resembles an ellipsoid and then the temperature distribution in depth was extended to $2\~3\;cm$ from the effective antenna axis.

  • In this study, the durability of conical pick cutter was compared and analyzed by pre- and post-test visual inspection, measurement of weight loss and wear volume through field test on two types of conical pick cutters applied to rotary drum cutter. In the visual inspection, it was found that only 9 inserts were lost in the slim type conical pick cutter. This result show that the thickness of the head cover surrounding a insert was important to maintain the insert during excavation. The weight loss and wear volume of the heavy type conical pick cutter were less than half that of the slim type. From these results, it can be confirmed that heavy type is more useful than slim type in hard rock. It should be noted that, when determining the wear loss of the conical pick cutter, the mutual comparison of the weight measurement and the wear volume measurement results may be different due to the unit weight of the material and the spalling caused by excavation.

  • This paper presents the comparison analysis of a Journal and thrust FDB (fluid dynamic bearing) and a conical FDB in a HDD spindle motor. The Reynolds equation is appropriately transformed to describe journal, thrust and conical bearing. Finite element method is applied to analyze the FDB by satisfying the continuity of mass and pressure at the interface between the hearings. The pressure field of the bearings is numerically approximated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition. The load and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and the velocity gradient along the fluid film. The flying height of the spindle motor is measured to verify the proposed analytical result. This research shows that the conical bearing generates bigger load capacity and less friction torque than the journal and thrust bearing in a HDD spindle motor.

  • A two-arm microstrip spiral antenna with a circular aperture on the ground plane that generates a circularly polarized conical beam is presented in this paper. We obtained circularly polarized conical beam by using two spirals that are excited in-phase from the microstrip feed lines. The main beam directions of the conical beam from the broadside are approximately 40$^{\circ}$ in the range from 5 GHz to 6.5 GHz, and 58$^{\circ}$ from 9 GHz to 11 GHz. Since the proposed antenna has omni-directional conical beam pattern, it is suitable for use in mobile communication systems.

  • It is desirable that the guard robot should be small-sized and light-weighted to increase its portability. In addition, it should be able to overcome a relatively high obstacle to cope with different situations. The jumping robot can reach a higher place more rapidly than other locomotion methods. This research proposes the jumping mechanism based on the conical spring for a small robot. Both the clutch mechanism and conical spring are incorporated into the jumping mechanism. In the clutch mechanism, the spring can be immediately compressed and released by one actuator with the planetary gear train and one-way clutch. The robot equipped with the jumping mechanism can overcome the obstacles which are higher than its height. In this paper, the characteristic of the conical spring for the jumping robot is determined and the small-sized, lightweight jumping mechanism is developed. The validity of the jumping mechanism was verified by various experiments. It is shown that the robot using this mechanism can provide good mobility in the rough terrain.

  • This describes the formulation for the free vibration of joined conical-cylindrical shells with uniform thickness using the transfer of influence coefficient. This method was developed based on successive transmission of dynamic influence coefficients, which were defined as the relationships between the displacement and the force vectors at arbitrary nodal circles of the system. The two edges of the shell having arbitrary boundary conditions are supported by several elastic springs with meridional/axial, circumferential, radial and rotational stiffness, respectively. The governing equations of vibration of a conical shell, including a cylindrical shell, are written as a coupled set of first order differential equations by using the transfer matrix of the shell. Once the transfer matrix of a single component has been determined, the entire structure matrix is obtained by the product of each component matrix and the joining matrix. The natural frequencies and the modes of vibration were calculated numerically for joined conical-cylindrical shells. The validity of the present method is demonstrated through simple numerical examples, and through comparison with the results of previous researchers.
