An Error Recovery Mechanism for Communications with Reliability in Sensor Network (센서 네트워크에서 신뢰성 있는 통신을 위한 에러 복구 기법)

  • In sensor network, the importance of transporting data with reliability is growing gradually to support communications. Data flow from sink to nodes needs reliability for the control or management, that is very sensitive and intolerable, however relatively, data flow from nodes to sink is tolerable. In this paper, with emphasis of the data flow from sink to nodes, we proposed the mechanism that establishes confidence interval for transport. Establishing confidence interval hop-by-hop, not end to end, if errors happen or there's missing data, this mechanism recovers them with selective acknowledgement using fixed window. In addition, this mechanism supports traffic congestion control depending on the buffer condition. Through the simulation, we showed that this mechanism has an excellent performance for error recovery in sensor network.

A Study on the Travel Behavior of Urban Employees in Texas, U.S.A. (미국 텍사스주 도시근로자의 통행행태 연구)

  • Traffic congestion has become severe in large metropolitan areas by the travel behavior of employees as the low rate of vehicle occupancy and the high rate of Private auto using. In order to relieve traffic congestion, central and local government plan to implement diverse transportation demand management strategies. The governments want to know what employment types and locations in different metropolitan areas lead to the highest rate of vehicle occupancy and Private auto use. This study suggest that in large metropolitan areas, the employment locations of urban and suburban as well as the employment type of service show low vehicle occupancy. In medium metropolitan sizes. low vehicle occupancies are observed in service employment as well as in the employment locations of CBD. CBD fringe. In small metropolitan areas, a low rate of vehicle occupancy exists in service employment as well as in the employment locations of urban and suburban areas. A high rate of auto use shows not only in basic employment but also in the employment locations of CBD and CBD fringe.

Acceptability of a Freeway Travel Reservation Strategy (고속도로 통행 예약제의 수용성 분석)

  • The objective of this study is to propose a new strategy, called "freeway travel reservation strategy", to mitigate freeway traffic congestion by using advanced traffic technologies and traffic demand management policies, and to analyze its acceptability. Motorist surveys were carried out to accomplish the acceptability analysis. As a result, 73% of respondents agreed with the proposed strategy, and an increase in the inconvenience for using freeway during the major Korean Holidays, in the age, in the number of family members, and in household income resulted in higher acceptability. Additionally, married or female respondents tended to have higher acceptability. Such results can be practical for developing policies to successfully operate the proposed strategy in the future.

  • The real-time traffic information is considered to be the system to alleviate traffic congestion. An effective traffic information will help drivers make efficient travel decision, and network performance will be improved. To make efficient strategy of providing information, the analyst should quantify reduced congestion by the media traffic informations. Many other route diversion models considered only media-informations as information sources and ignored the impact of on-site informations such as visible delays and average speeds, which affect drivers' route diversion decision in practice. In those models, the effect of on-site informations could be treated to be the effect of media informations, and the effects of media informations would be over-estimated. The proposed model including the impact of on-site information can estimate the effect of media-informations. The results are expected to be applied to the analysis of traffic management policy such as ITS.

  • Data dissemination schemes for wireless sensor networks, where sinks and event targets might be mobile, has been one of the active research fields. For doing that, stationary nodes gathered data on behalf of mobile sinks and the relayed data in previous studies. their schemes, however, lead to frequent query flooding and report congestion problems over sink moving. We propose a data dissemination protocol to solve both the query flooding and the report congestion problem. Our scheme improves the two shortcomings through sink location management. Finally, we prove effectiveness of our protocol through computer simulations.

  • Intelligent transport services on smart roads tend to have a problem at the stage of benefit-cost analysis that can not secure economic feasibility of the new services which increase early investment cost on building its infrastructure. It is expected that the number of road accidents, 'Incident/Accident', will decline through various safety services using intelligent safety facilities, intelligent transport management and so on, and that traffic congestion will also decrease. The effect of traffic congestion reduction could be the benefit by safety improvement, however current investment-analysis process in Korea does not appropriate it as a benefit. This study estimated road blocking time with 'Incident/Accident' classification and highway accident data of past three years. It also developed a generalized model by a regression analysis with a microscopical simulation. Furthermore, it suggested necessary units on quantitative analysis in order to make the developed model applicable to investment evaluation. As a result of applying the developed model to Smart-Highway Project, it showed that total safety improvement benefit is about 139 billion dollars over 30 years when it is supposed that accident decreasing rate by smart safety facilities is 10%.

  • Traffic congestion occurs from drivers' human factors such as driver reaction time, reckless lane change, and inexperienced driving. When Automated Vehicles are introduced, human factors are excluded, resulting in increased average vehicle speed, stabilizing traffic flow, and increasing road capacity. This study analyzed traffic flow changes through traffic volume-speed-density plots, and increased road capacity due to Automated Vehicles. As a result of the analysis, when rate of automated vehicles gests higher, the traffic flow became stable. Additionally, it was analyzed that when all vehicles were automated, the road capacity increased by about 120 %. It is expected that there will be a positive expectation in terms of traffic congestion and traffic demand management due to the introduction of Automated Vehicles.

An Adaptive RIO buffer management scheme for QoS guarantee of Assured Service in Differentiated Services (DiffServ 방식의 Assured Service에서 QoS 보장을 위한 Adaptive RIO 방식의 제안)

  • In this paper, we proposed an Adaptive RIO scheme to solve the problem of RIO scheme that occurs when admission control is performed for QoS guarantee of Assured Service in Differentiated Services. To prevent an early random drop of the admitted In-profile packet, proposed Adaptive RIO scheme updates parameters of RIO scheme every time interval according to the estimated numbers of maximum packet arrivals of In-profile traffic and total traffic during the next time interval. The numbers of maximum packet arrivals during the next time interval are estimated based on the buffer size determined by the network topology and the ratio of bandwidth allocated to each subclass. We found from simulation results that, compared with RIO scheme, proposed Adaptive RIO scheme can improve performance of the throughput for In-profile traffic when admission control is performed or congestion occurs.

  • In this paper, we design the r-Sensor protocol for reliable data transmission in the Intelligent Home Service based on the wireless sensor network environment. The r-Sensor protocol improve the reliability of data transmission and node fairness using simple routing algorithm, congestion control, and loss recovery method that minimize the load of relay node. Reposed routing algorithm find out upstream and downstream nodes using the Network Management packet. Meanwhile, loss recovery algorithm uses the Aggregated-Nack. To apply supposed algorithm, the IHS-AMR(Intelligent Home Service - Automatic Meter Reader) and sensor node are designed and implemented in hardware. The IHS-AMR provides remote metering service and also offers home safety service by internetworking with sensor network, mobile phone network and internet.

  • Adaptive Cyclic Packet Dropping algorithm (ACPD), and Non-adaptive Cyclic Packet Dropping algorithm (NCPD) are applying stricter drop precedence than that of RIO algorithm. Especially, the ACPD algorithm drops adaptively packets for the congestion control, as predicting traffic pattern between each cycle. Therefore the ACPD algorithm makes up for the drawback of RIO algorithm and minimizes the wastes of the bandwidth being capable of predicting in the NCPD algorithm. And we executed a simulation and analyzed the throughput and packet drop rate based on Sending Priority changing dynamically depending on network traffic. In this algorithm, applying strict drop precedence policy, we get better performance on priority levels. The results show that the proposed algorithms may provide more efficient and stricter drop precedence policy as compared to RIO independent of traffic load. The ACPD algorithm can provide better performance on priority levels and keep stricter drop policy than RIO and the NCPD algorithm.
