  • Large-scale urban concentration of population and vehicles due to economic growth in Korea has been causing serious urban transport problems. Although the collection of congestion pricing has been evaluated as the most effective transportation policy to alleviate traffic demand, its effectiveness is very limited as it was just executed around congested points or along main arterial roads. This study derived dynamic congestion zones with the average travel speed of 206 traffic analysis zones in Busan Metropolitan City to propose a dynamic congestion pricing collection system by employing Space-Time Cube Analysis and Emerging Hot Spot Analysis. As a result, dynamic hot spots were formed from 7h to 24h and particularly, traffic congestion was severely deteriorated from 18h to 20h around Seomyeon and Gwangbok-dong. Therefore, it is expected that the effect of dynamic congestion pricing will be maximized in managing traffic demand in the city center.

  • Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) is a standardized protocol by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for the Internet of things (IoT). IoT devices have limited computation power, memory, and connectivity capabilities. One of the significant problems in IoT networks is congestion control. The CoAP standard has an exponential backoff congestion control mechanism, which may not be adequate for all IoT applications. Each IoT application would have different characteristics, requiring a novel algorithm to handle congestion in the IoT network. Unnecessary retransmissions, and packet collisions, caused due to lossy links and higher packet error rates, lead to congestion in the IoT network. This paper presents an adaptive congestion control protocol for CoAP, Adaptive Congestion Control with a Backoff algorithm (ACCB). AACB is an extension to our earlier protocol AdCoCoA. The proposed algorithm estimates RTT, RTTVAR, and RTO using dynamic factors instead of fixed values. Also, the backoff mechanism has dynamic factors to estimate the RTO value on retransmissions. This dynamic adaptation helps to improve CoAP performance and reduce retransmissions. The results show ACCB has significantly higher goodput (49.5%, 436.5%, 312.7%), packet delivery ratio (10.1%, 56%, 23.3%), and transmission rate (37.7%, 265%, 175.3%); compare to CoAP, CoCoA+ and AdCoCoA respectively in linear scenario. The results show ACCB has significantly higher goodput (60.5%, 482%,202.1%), packet delivery ratio (7.6%, 60.6%, 26%), and transmission rate (40.9%, 284%, 146.45%); compare to CoAP, CoCoA+ and AdCoCoA respectively in random walk scenario. ACCB has similar retransmission index compare to CoAp, CoCoA+ and AdCoCoA respectively in both the scenarios.

  • In the wireless network, TCP performs poorly because it was originally designed for wired networks and does not take into consideration wireless characteristics such as mobility, high-loss probability, and hidden-terminal problems. In particular, in the wireless multi-hop networks, a large congestion window increases the probability of contention and packet losses, and TCP performance is degraded severely as a result. So, it is necessary to limit the TCP congestion window size in order keep the probability of contention loss in the system to a minimum. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for determining the maximum congestion window size based on the measured bandwidth and Round-Trip-Time (RTT). Using ns-2 simulation, we show that the proposed scheme reduces the probability of packet contention and improves TCP performance.

  • This paper describes a feedback-based congestion control algorithm to improve TCP performance over wireless network. In this paper, we adjust the packet marking probability at the router for Max-Min fair sharing of the bandwidth and full utilization of the link. Using the successive ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification), the proposed algorithm regulates the window size to avoid the congestion and sees the packet loss only due to the wireless link error. Based on the asymptotic analysis, it is shown that the proposed algorithm guarantees the QoS of the wireless TCP. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by simulations.

  • The issue of supporting TCP traffic over ATM networks is currently one of the most important issues in the field of data networks. One important part of this issue is congestion control. In general, congestion control uses method such as packet drop to relieve network resource when the network is congested so as to maintain high throughput and low delay. In addition, congestion control is required to ensure fair sharing of resources among all users during congestion. In this paper we propose a new congestion control method using WRED & per-VC accounting mechanism. This packet discard scheme is proposed with the goal to provide both good performance in terms of throughput and fairness in terms of bandwidth exploitation of the output link among all virtual circuits.

  • This paper presents a new method of Fuzzy Particle Swarm Optimization (FPSO)-based Congestion Management (CM) by optimal rescheduling of active powers of generators. In the proposed method, generators are selected based on their sensitivity to the congested line for efficient utilization. The task of optimally rescheduling the active powers of the participating generators to reduce congestion in the transmission line is attempted by FPSO, Fitness Distance Ratio PSO (FDR-PSO), and conventional PSO. The FPSO and FDR-PSO algorithms are tested on the IEEE 30-bus and Practical Indian 75-bus systems, after which the results are compared with conventional PSO to determine the effectiveness of CM. Compared with FDR-PSO and PSO, FPSO can better perform the optimal rescheduling of generators to relieve congestion in the transmission line.

  • An investigation is given to a behavioral analysis of automobile users applying congestion toll theory for the purpose of maintaining the efficiency of transportation system. A case study is performed for the city of Seoul, where modal split behavior of automobile user groups is analysed in various level of congestion toll. Automobile users are grouped with respect to their income levels and work shift times. Automobile user behavior is then explained against the field data. A Logit-type model is applied for modal split changes through the application of congestion toll. It is found in the case study that the users in the monthly income bracket of 1.0~1.5 million won is the most predictable group whose work travel time begins 7:00~9:00 a.m. It is also found in the study that 1,000~1,500 won of congestion toll whould reduce the auto use as much as 5%.

  • Congestion management is one of the most challenging aspects in the recently deregulated electricity markets. FACTS devices have been shown to be an efficient alternative to control the flow of power in lines, resulting in increased loadability, lower system loss and a reduced cost of production. In this paper, the application of a static series synchronous compensator (SSSC) for the purpose of congestion management of power systems has been studied. A sensitivity-based analysis method is utilized for effective determination of the SSSC location in an electricity market. The method is topology based and it is independent of the system operation point. A power injection p-model is developed for the SSSC in this study. Numerical results based on the modified IEEE 14 bus system with/without the SSSC demonstrate the feasibility as well as the effectiveness of the SSSC for congestion management in a network. The results obtained when using the SSSC to improve system transfer capability and congestion management is encouraging.

  • This paper presents a combination of optimization concept and congestion control for multicast communications to bring best benefit for the network. For different types of Internet services, there will be different utility functions and so there will be different ways to choose on how to control the congestion, especially for real time multicast traffic. Our proposed algorithm OMCC brings the first implementation experiment of utility-based Multicast Congestion Control. Simulation results show that OMCC brings better network performances in multicast session throughput while it still keeps a certain fairness of unicast and multicast sessions, and thus, provides better benefit for all network participants.
