This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element analysis methodology for a quantitative evaluation of confinement in concrete-filled box-shaped unstiffened steel columns. The confinement effects of concrete in non-circular sections can be assessed in terms of maximum average lateral pressure. A brief review of a previous method adopted for the same purpose is also presented. The previous method is based on a two-dimensional finite element analysis method involving a concrete-steel interaction model. In both the present and previous methods, average lateral pressure on concrete is computed by means of the interaction forces present at the concrete-steel interface. Subsequently, the strength enhancement of confined concrete is empirically related to the maximum average lateral pressure. The results of the former and latter methods are then compared. It is found that the results of both methods are compatible in terms of confined concrete strengths, although the interaction model yields a somewhat overestimated estimation of confinement than those of the present method when relatively high strength concrete is used. Furthermore, the confinement in rectangular-shaped sections is investigated and the reliability of previously adopted simplifications in such cases is discussed.
Extensive research has been conducted on the basic mechanical property and structural applications of engineered cementitious composites (ECC). Despite the high tensile ductility and high toughness of ECC, transverse steel reinforcement is still necessary to confine ECC for high performance. However, limited research has examined performance of ECC confined with practical amount of transverse reinforcement. This paper presents the results of axial compression tests on 14 square ECC columns and 4 conventional concrete columns (used as control specimens) with transverse reinforcement. The test variables were spacing, configuration (square ties or square and diamond shape ties), and yield strength of stirrups. The test showed that ECC columns confined with steel stirrup had good compressive ductility, and the stirrup spacing had the greatest effect on the compressive performance. The self-confinement effect of ECC results in a more uniform but slower expansion of the whole column compared with CC ones. The test results are then compared against the predictions from a number of existing models for conventional confined concrete. It is indicated that these models fail to predict the axial strains at peak axial stress and the trend of the stress-strain curve of steel stirrups-confined ECC with sufficient accuracy. Several new equations are then proposed for the compressive properties of steel-confined ECC based on test results and potential approaches for future studies are proposed.

Lateral pressure by tied reinforcement greatly enhances the maximum strength and ductility of columns under concentric loading. The lateral confinement effects will be improves ductility of high-strength concrete. The major purpose of this paper is to study on the improvements of maximum strength and strain at the point of tied high-strength concrete columns subject to axial loads. For this purpose, this study collected the other analytical results and the experimental data that has been performed by a lot of worldwide researchers and also analyzed it statistically. As the result, the theoretical equation for predict maximum strength and strain at the point was proposed. It is based on calculation of lateral confinement pressure generate from tensile that develop in transverse reinforcement.
The objective of this study is to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete columns confined by lateral ties. This test was carried on the twelve reinforced concrete columns subjected to lateral and constant axial loads. The main experimental variables are concrete strength, the configuration of lateral ties, and the amount of lateral ties. Test results indicated that the steel configuration in column sections plays an important role in column behavior, and a proper configuration of lateral ties can obtain more ductile by the reduction of the space of lateral ties. Also, this experiment show that the utlization of high-strength concrete in columns properly designed on ACI Code takes less ductile. Therefore, we can conclude that the design of high-strength concrete columns under high axial loads requires more lateral ties than ACI Code.

This study estimates the performance of steel spirals according to the compressive strength of the concrete. A total of 24 confined concrete cylinders ($150{\times}300mm$) were cast and tested under monotonic concentric compression. The main test parameters were the yield strength of spiral reinforcements and the compressive strength of the concrete. To effectively evaluate the confinement effect according to the yield strength of steel spirals, the external diameter of steel spirals was designed to be same as the diameter of specimen. The experimental results indicated that the performance of confinement of steel spirals increased as the yield strength of spiral reinforcement increased and the compressive strength of the concrete decreased. Furthermore, existing analytical models were used for predicting the stress versus axial strain relationships of specimens tested in this study. It can be concluded that the accuracy of the analytical models deteriorated as the yield strength of steel spirals and the compressive strength of the concrete increased.

In order to predict the behavior of column confined with spirals, the accurate estimation of confining stress by spiral is very important, Thus a number of models have been proposed for calculating the confining stress by spiral. However, in these equations, it was not considered the effects of the difference of mechanical characteristics related to the application of high strength concrete and spiral in structures. In this study, a model equation for calculation of the confining stress by spiral was proposed based on the test results investigated here. The proposed equation included the effects of concrete strength, spacing and yield strength of spirals

This study is to performed to find the optimum mix proportion of the high strength and self compacting concrete for the above-ground LNG storage tank construction and field application. If LNG storage tank wall thicknesscan be reduced, the construction cost and quality can be improved by using self-compacting high strength concrete with compressive strength 60~80 MPa. For this purpose, low heat cement (Type IV) and class F fly ash are used in concrete mix to control hydration heat, flowability, and viscosity. Mix design variables of unit water, fly ash replacement ratio, water-binder ratio, and fine aggregate ratio are selected and tested for material properties and manufacturing cost of the concrete. Also, fly ash replacement ratio is considered using confined water ratio test. The test results showed that the optimum mix proportion of the self-compacting high strength concrete characteristics are as follows. 1) In case of the concrete with specified compressive strength of 60 MPa, the optimum mix proportion is fly ash replacement ratio of 20% and water- binder ratio of 27~30%. 2) In case of the concrete with the strength of 80 MPa, the optimum mix proportion is fly ash replacement ratio of 10% and water-binder ratio 25%. But unit water and fine aggregate ratio are 165 $kg/m^3$ and $51{\pm}2%$, respectively, regardless of the traget concrete compressive strength range. Also, test results showed that concrete manufacturing cost of 60 MPa and 80 MPa concrete require additional costs of 14~22% and 33%, respectively, compared to the manufacturing cost of 40 MPa concrete. Therefore, application of the self-compacting high strength concrete has proven to be economical in the perspective of the material cost, quality control, and site management.
As the common cast-in-place construction works fails to meet the enormous construction demand under rapid economic growth, the development of prefabricated structure instead becomes increasingly promising in China. For the prefabricated structure, its load carrying connection joint play a key role in maintaining the structural integrity. Therefore, a novel end plate bolt connecting joint between fully prefabricated pre-stressed concrete beam and high-strength reinforcement-confined concrete column was proposed. Under action of low cycle repeated horizontal loadings, comparative tests are conducted on 6 prefabricated pre-stressed intermediate joint specimens and 1 cast-in-place joint specimen to obtain the specimen failure modes, hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, ductility factor, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity and other seismic indicators, and the seismic characteristics of the new-type prefabricated beam-column connecting joint are determined. The test results show that all the specimens for end plate bolt connecting joint between fully prefabricated pre-stressed concrete beam and high-strength reinforcement-confined concrete column have realized the design objectives of strong column weak beam. The hysteretic curves for specimens are good, indicating desirable ductility and energy dissipation capacity and seismic performances, and the research results provide theoretical basis and technical support for the promotion and application of prefabricated assembly frames in the earthquake zone.

The objective of this paper is to analyse the high-strength concrete columns subjected to reversed cyclic and axial loads by using nonlinear analysis model and compare the experimental results with analysis. The analytical parameters are the compressive strength of concrete, spacing of lateral reinforcement and lateral reinforcement ratio. In this study, the proposed analytical model takes ito account the influence of confined concrete, tension stiffening and strain hardening of steel. The high-strength concrete columns are used to model fiber section element. The analysis results are shown comparatively good prediction on envelope curve, accumulative dissipated energy, deformability and so on.
