  • Noise from air-conditioner system installed in the ceiling of a classroom was evaluated to investigate the sound quality of air-conditioning noise. Harmonics of air-conditioning noise were removed and the sound pressure levels of the frequency bands from $250{\sim}630Hz$ were changed to control sound quality. Evaluation for refreshing sensation was conducted using a paired comparison method and the results showed that noise without harmonics were preferred to noise with harmonics. The noises which have larger level increases to the unchanged noise at $250{\sim}630Hz$ were evaluated better in both of the noises with and without harmonics. Results of multiple regression analysis on psychoacoustic parameters and subjective preferences showed sharpness as a major affecting factor in describing the refreshing aspect of air-conditioning sound.

  • The growth promotion of a Taxus brevifolia cell suspension culture was investigated using conditioning factors. The conditioning factors produced and secreted from cultured cells usually stimulate cell division and the production of secondary metabolites. Therefore, the effective incubation time for the optimal secretion of conditioning factors was firstly determined for the promotion of cell growth. Conditioned media obtained by cultivating for 2 and 5 days showed the promotion of initial cell growth during the early cell growth period. However, the positive effect of the conditioning factors on the initial cell growth did not continue because of the depletion of the medium nutrients. Accordingly, the addition of a carbon source to the conditioned medium prolonged the positive effect on the cell growth. The addition of sucrose to the conditioned medium resulted in the maximum cell density being reached 4 days earlier compared to the control group and an increased substrate yield.

  • The present study was conducted to estimate the effect on fouling reduction in tubes of the condenser. It shows in detail how to calculate the fouling factor from the experimental results of refrigeration systems with or without the automatic cleaning system using sponge balls and to predict the variation of the factor with time. It also represents how to calculate the temperature and pressure decrease of the refrigerant vapor in the condenser and the load decrease of the compressor in the refrigeration system by fouling reduction.

  • A geometrically asymmetric trapezoidal fin is analyzed using the one-dimensional analytic method. Heat loss and thermal resistance are represented as a function of the fin base thickness, base height, fm shape factor, inside fluid convection characteristic number, convection characteristic numbers ratio, fm length and ambient convection characteristic number. The relationship between the fin base height and the shape factor for equal amounts of heat loss is presented. One of the results shows that the variations of the fm base thickness and the inside fluid convection characteristic number give no effect on the thermal resistance.

  • The present experimental study investigates the impact of porous fins on the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in plate-fin heat exchangers. Systematic experiments have been carried out in a simplified model of a plate-porous fin heat exchanger at a controlled test environment. Comparison of performance between the porous fins and the conventional louvered fins has been made. The experimental results indicate that friction and heat transfer rate are significantly affected by permeability as well as porosity of the porous fin. The porous fins used in the present study show a similar air-side performance to the louvered fin. The correlations of friction and modified j-factor are also given for the design of the plate-porous fin heat exchanger.

  • The characteristics of flow and heat transfer in the heat exchanger of heat pipes with fins have been studied numerically for cooling enhancement of electronic components of KTX (Korea Train eXpress). Numerical analysis and methodology have been conformed by comparing the experimental results for inlined array of heat pipes. The staggered arrangement of heat pipes has been proposed in order to achieve heat transfer enhancement. As results, the geometry change to the staggered array is conformed to increase the heat transfer of the system accompanied by an increase of pressure drop. The current results of friction factor and Colburn j factor are presented in terms of Reynolds number and staggered distance, and are expected to use for design and manufacture of such a system.

  • Heat transfer and pressure drop on the air side of a plate-louvered fin heat exchanger with new shape of louver fin have been investigated experimentally. Water is employed inside the flat tube to transfer heat with air for convenience. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a plate-louvered heat exchanger. The effect of air flow rate, water flow rate and water temperature on pressure drop as well as heat transfer in air side are studied in detail. The present results showed a good agreement qualitatively with the previous results in general. Based on the experimental data, f-factor and j -factor correlations of the present louvered-fin are suggested. It is also found that heat transfer could be enhanced with new shape of louver fin, compared with the conventional louvered-fin, while the f-factor remains unchanged.

  • Theoritical Study is performed on heat transfer and fluid flow induced by square-ribbed roughness elements in a concentric annulus. The fluid properties were assumed to be constant, and the radius($r_m$) of the maximum speed point was found by using the principle of equation of Leung and Labib. The Nusselt number and friction factor as a function of the Reynolds number($R_e=10^4$, $5{\times}10^4$, $7{\times}10^4$, $10^5$) in artifical roughness $S/{\epsilon}=5,10,20,30$, $P/{\epsilon}=2,5,8$ and prandtl number = 0.72 have been discussed. In this study, it has been found that the Nusselt number and friction factor of rough wall are larger than those of smooth ones.

  • To optimize a heating and cooling system, we need an exact solution lot radiant heat transfer in any form of room or building. This paper describes the solution method of view factor by the area weighted average and graphical method to calculate the radiant heat exchange or daylighting level in any form of room or building. This study shows that the area weighted average and graphical methods have many points of merits(calculation speed, correctness and calculation capability in an arbitrary form of room shapes etc.) compared with existing methods
