  • This study aims to better estimate the amount of time spent for child care and to understand the characteristics of time spent for child care among employed and non-employed mothers with children under age 6 by taking concurrent activities into account. To assess time spent for child care, I differentiate child care activities into three types: primary activity without concurrent activities, primary activity with concurrent activities, and secondary activity with concurrent activities. The Major results of this study are as follows: First, employed mothers spent 145 minutes less than non-employed mothers in the total amount of time spent for child care during weekdays and this difference diminished to 62 minutes on weekends. Specifically there were differences in all types of time spent for child care among employed and non-employed mothers during weekdays, while the difference was only significant in the average amount of primary time spent for child care without concurrent activities on weekends. Second, there was no difference in the average ratio of time spent for child care with concurrent activities among employed and non-employed mothers during weekdays. By contrast, the average ratio of time spent for child care with concurrent activities of employed mothers was 5% higher than non-employed mothers on weekends. Lastly, the highest concurrent activity with child care activities was leisure followed by housework. This means that child care, leisure, and housework are somewhat related to each other among mothers.

  • Concurrent construction offers considerable improvement for shorten the project duration of its production process. Therefore, standardized concurrent construction is widely applied in building construction projects. However, resources planning for standardized concurrent construction project is manually developed by construction manager. This practice is not effective since it is time-consuming and error-prone for managers to identify all project-specific information, distinguish different activity-resource types, interpret these types and analyze how they affect resource allocated on an ad hoc basis. Therefore, this research investigates the opportunity for leveraging activity modeling to enable automated resource planning for standardized concurrent construction during project development, with identifying the characteristics of construction activities under standardized concurrent planning and determining the activity-resources types that affects resource planning. Both will function as a basis for modeling these construction activities in a computer-interpretable manner and for automation in resource planning.

  • Aspirin and prednisolone have been used alone or in combination in the treatment of rheumatic diseases. We have investigated the significance of the difference of the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities between single and concurrent administration of aspirin and prednisolone in rats by using carrageenan as a phlogistic agent and brewer's yeast as a fever inducing agent. When prednisolone (9mg/kg) and aspirin (24mg/kg) were administered orally alone or in combination, both of the concurrent and single adminstration inhibited highly significantly the swelling of rat paw and the concurrent adminstraiton of aspirin and prednisolone showed the significantly higher inhibitory effects than aspirin single adminstration did, whereas there were not any significant differences between the prednisolone single adminstration and combined adminstration. The combined drug of aspirin and prednisolone marketed in Korea contains 148mg of aspirin and 1.15mg of prednisolone in a tablet. Therefore, we examined the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities of aspirin (150mg/kg), prednisolone (1mg/kg) and their combination. In anti-inflammatory effects, both of the concurrent and single administration inhibited higly significantly the swelling of rat paw, and the concurrent adminstration exhibited the significantly higher inhibitory effects than aspirin or prednisolon alone did. In antipyretic effects both of the concurrent and the single adminstration reduced significantly the brewer's yeast-induced fever. The effect of concurrent administration was greater than that of prednisolone single adminstration, whereas the effect of aspirin single adminstration was similar to that of combination. The results suggest that the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects are intensified by the concurrent adminstration of aspirin and prednisolone, but the antipyretic effects of enough doses of aspirin (150mg/kg) is comparable to that of the combination preparation.

  • The authors investigated drug interaction of ibuprofen and prednisolone in antiinflammatory and antipyretic activities. We have found significant differences of the antiinflammatory and antipyretic activities between single and concurrent administration of ibuprofen and prednisolone, using Sprague-Dawley Strain rats, carrageenin as a phlogistic agent and brewer's yeast as a fever inducing agent. 1) Ibuprofen(20mg/kg) was administered to the rats orally and resulted in significant reduction of (31.70 %) the swelling of rat paw induced by carrageenin, 2) prednisolone (9mg/kg) showed significant reduction of (45.76%) the swelling, 3) concurrent administration of ibuprofen (20mg/kg) and prednisolone (9mg/kg) also reduced (57.40%) the swelling. In ibuprofen (125mg/kg) administration, the inhibition rate of edema was 39.32% and in prednisolone (1mg/kg) administration, the rate was 39.04%. In concurrent administration of ibuprofen (125mg/kg) and prednisolone (1mg/kg), the inhibition rate of edema was 63.09%. Concurrent administration of ibuprofen and prednisolone showed more anti-inflammatory effects than single administration of ibuprofen and prednisolone respectively. Prednisolone itself did not show antipyretic effect, but concurrent administration of ibuprofen and prednisolone showed more antipyretic effects than ibuprofen single administratron.

  • Although several research efforts have been directed to fast-tracking to reduce the total delivery time, few researches have been studied on concurrent engineering in construction projects. The focus of fast-tracking is primarily on overlapping independent activity pairs. In comparison, the focus of concurrent engineering is on overlapping dependent activity pairs. Dependent activities are much harder to overlap successfully. This paper presents a simulation-based Concurrent Engineering methodology to optimize the overall duration of a set of design activities in a project by modelling key factors that determine the duration of individual activities and overlap between dependent activities. This methodology involves determining how much to overlap activities, how to decide which activities to overlap and the corresponding cost and time tradeoffs using a discrete event model solution. This simulation model, therefore, can be used as a reference on decision-making to define optimum point between time and cost.

  • The engineering process including design, analysis/evaluation and manufacturing activities is becoming one of the key issues to embody a concurrent engineering concept. This paper proposes a framework to integrated the complicated engineering design and manufacturing processes under the concurrent engineering environment. The framework offers the following facilities: (1) to represent the complicated engineering process (2) to coordinate design activities and execute the process in a distributed environment (3) to support a communication among the related engineers. The engineering processes is depicted using process flow graphs that consist in tasks and the corresponding input and output data. The engineering activities in the defined processes can be executed in a distributed environment through process controller of the framework. Engineers can communicate to suggest their opinions and to exchange product information in the framework. We have conformed the CORBA standard to integrate various distributed engineering the and communicate among them, and used a Java to support the platform independent environment on the Internet. Since the proposed framework an be a formal approach to integrate the engineering processes by providing formalism, parallelism, reusability, and flexibility, it can be effectively applied to embody the concurrent engineering concept in a distributed environment.

  • Banhasasim-tang(半夏瀉心湯), oriental medicine, has been used for the treatment of the gastric diseases and cimetidine, H2-receptor blocker, has been also used as the gastric ulcer remedy but has some side action. Therefore the concurrent administration of these two drugs may increase antiulcer activities and also decrease cimetidine's side action more than administrating one by one. In order to investigate antiulcer activities, some experiments were conducted. The concurrent administration of Banhasasim-tang extract(BS) and cimetidine(CM) given intraperitoneally (CM 50mg/kg + BS 300mg/kg and CM 50mg/kg + BS 500 mg/kg), significantly inhibited Shay, aspirin and indomethacin ulcers in rats.

  • Concurrent construction (or overlapping) is an alternative project delivery process to reduce time-tomarket such that the owner can get higher profits; the increased profits due to shortened project duration would exceed the loss of profits from the increased cost, if any. For more effective concurrent construction, a new conceptual framework for concurrent construction planning is suggested. With multiple work methods available in each activity, the performance of overlapping between two activities in terms of cost is affected by the compatibility between work methods selected and the benefit to the project owner is determined by internal rate of return (RoR). The impact of the compatibility between work methods and the conceptual framework are explained by a hypothetical case study.
