  • A new testing equipment is designed to investigate the characteristics of the drainage fabric which is used in the tunnel drain system. The equipment is possible to model the loading as well as boundary conditions of the shotcrete precisely and it follows the general guideline of ASTM D4716 so that the interface between shotcrete and concrete lining retains the real situation in the tunnel site. Using the real loading conditions and surface irregularities, the flow rate and its capacity of the regular fabric has been estimated. A composite drainage fabric having geogrid inside was also used to investigate the flow rate and its efficiency. The advantages of the composite fabric compared with the regular one have been demonstrated using the experimental data and brief outline of the future work is finally proposed.

  • In case the overburden of a tunnel is too low to adopt NATM, cut and cover method generally can be chosen as alternative. However, in tunneling some area with very low or no overburden between two mountains, the cut and cover method requires additional construction of a couple of tunnel portals and the maintenance of portal slopes until backfilling is completed. As a solution for this problem, increasing the tunnel overburden by raising the ground level can be effective. This paper presents the case study for tunneling at C240 site in Taiwan High Speed Railway(THSR) in which soil-cement filling method was used for pre-banking before tunnel excavation. Cement content of filling material was $2\~4\%$ and thickness of filling a round was $130\~250\;mm$. The stability evaluation for the soil-cement slope and concrete lining of low cover tunnel was conducted by numerical analysis.

  • Shear wave velocity, one of major elastic constants in the dynamic design for civil structures, is conventionally measured from downhole, crosshole or sonic logging tests. SASW (Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves) method, which overcomes the disadvantage of the in-hole tests, can evaluate subsurface stiffness nondestructively and nonintrusively through measuring surface waves on surface. In this paper, principles of the SASW method are briefly described and the results of various field tests, conducted to investigate the applicability of the method, are summarized. The SASW method was successfully applied in evaluating the effects of dynamic compaction at Inchon international airport site, applied in evaluating the integrity of the lining and sidewall at a testing tunnel located in Mabukri, and applied in detecting thickness of a concrete retaining wall. The results of field tests and the nondestructive and economical characteristics of the method show the promising future of the SASW method in civil engineering projects.

  • Artificial neural networks are efficient computing techniques that are widely used to solve complex problems in many fields. In this study, in order to predict tunnel-induced ground movements, Tunnel Behavior Prediction System (TBPS) was developed by using these artificial neural networks model, based on a Held instrumentation database (i.e. crown settlement, convergence, axial force of rock bolt, compressive and shear stress of shotcrete, stress of concrete lining etc.) obtained from 193 location data of 31 different tunnel sites where works are completed. The study and test of the network were performed by Back Propagation Algorithm which is known as a systematic technique for studying the multi-layer artificial neural network. The tunnel behaviors predicted by TBPS were compared with monitored data in the tunnel sites and numerical analysis results. This study showed that the values obtained from TBPS were within allowable limits. It is concluded that this system can effectively estimate the tunnel ground movements and can also be used f3r tunneling feasibility study, and basic and detailed design and construction of tunnel.

  • In this study, research was performed to establish the measurement and frequency of analysis for maintenance monitoring by investigation of tunnel maintenance monitoring system in the tunnel which was installed in the Seoul metro line 5, 7 and 8, using that the domestic and foreign application case, results of analyzed maintenance monitoring in the domestic tunnel and legal safety management standard of the facility. The results of the monitoring management about analysis frequency to the present are considered that the problem about measuring frequency does not occur. According to the analysis results of the maintenance monitoring which are located on the 5, 6th subway line, they are analyzed that the stress of concrete lining and reinforced bar are converged gradually after 45 months. Therefore Monitoring of measurement and analysis frequency is conduct more often within about 4 years after the measuring instrument installation. Four years later, slowing the frequency of measurement is considered reasonable.

  • The main objective of this paper is finding the influence factors and their degree of importance to steel liner's safety by investigating and evaluating the buckling incidents of steel tunnel liner under external water pressure. The study was based on the detailed investigation to the design conditions and incident shapes at 2m diameter waterway tunnel with a partially buckled internal steel liner and concrete backfilled lining as the raw water transmission pipe line of regional water supply project. Appropriate buckling theory capable of applying this incident points was selected by referring the existing literature and compared with the results of investigation. Also, hydrogeological characteristics of this site on buckling pressure was evaluated. The result of this study was shown that both the hydrogeological characteristics of upper geologic layers and proper tunnel construction are important factors on buckling at steel liner, and hydraulic gradient level should be decided according to the hydrogeological characteristics. This incident case analysis on steel liner of pressurized waterway tunnel was expected to provide more information for realizing the problems and improvements at each design, construction and maintenance stages.

  • Recently, due to urban development and expansion, construction plans have been increasing adjacent to existing tunnel structures such as subways, roads, and large pipelines. Structural plans adjacent to existing tunnels have different effects on tunnel stability depending on the construction method, degree of proximity, and location of new structures. In particular, the pressure water tunnel shows a very large difference from other road tunnels and railway tunnels in geotechnical characteristics and operation characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to review the safety zone due to adjacent construction in consideration of the geotechnical characteristics of the water tunnel and the new sturure construction method. In this study, the existing tunnel safety zone standards were investigated. A stability evaluation performed numerical analysis considering the deterioration of concrete lining in operation and the characteristics of water tunnel. In addition, the impact of vibration caused by pile construction and blasting excavation of new structures was reviewed. Based on this, a pressure water tunnel safety zone was proposed in consideration of adjacent construction.

  • This study has reviewed the applicability of displacement measurement by using a digital vision technique based on typical photogrammetric methods. In this study, a series of experimental measurements have been performed in order to improve the accuracy of digital vision measurement by establishing criteria of factors of various vision measurements. It is found that the digital vision measurement tends to show higher accuracy as the image size(resolution) and the focal length become larger and the distance to an object becomes closer. It is also observed that measurement error decreases with processing as many images as possible in various angles. Applicability on high-resolution displacement measurement is proved by applying the digital vision measurement developed in this study to a large scale loading test of concrete lining.

  • When constructing a subsea tunnel in discontinuous rock mass, fluid flow in joints has a great influence on the behavior of the tunnel so that hydro-mechanical coupled analysis should be performed for the stability estimation. In practice, relaxed rock load is generally used for the design of tunnel concrete lining. In a continuum analysis, a method based on the distribution of local safety factor around a tunnel was proposed for the estimation of a potential relaxed zone. However, in the case of discontinuous rock mass in which joints are developed, the whole stability of tunnels depends on the behavior of the joints. In this study, therefore, a method is proposed for the estimation of a potential relaxed zone occurred by the excavation of a tunnel in discontinuous rock mass. The suggested method is validated by sensitivity analysis and the comparison with the results of continuum analysis.

  • This paper studied the cause of the deterioration of the four 3-Arch tunnels built in mid-1990. The common deteriorations of the four 3-Arch tunnels were longitudinal cracks, leakage and efflorescence at the same parts of lining concrete. Three fourths of 3-Arch tunnels, there was high percentage longitudinal cracks and a quarter was low frequency about longitudinal cracks. So the material reviewed to find out the differences between two groups in construction process and analysis was conducted such as non-destructive testing, precise visual survey and safety evaluation of one tunnel which had bad ground condition As the result, the tunnels were safety condition and the primary deterioration occurred during the construction process, namely, problems arrangement of rebar and the effects of the blast at middle tunnel.
