  • PURPOSES : This purpose of this study is to analyze the effect to autogenous shrinkage of the top-layer material of a two-lift concrete pavement mixing both silica fume and polymer powder. METHODS : The bottom-layer of a two-lift concrete pavement was paved with original portland cement (OPC) with a 20~23 cm thickness. Additionally, the top-layer which is directly exposed to the environment and vehicles was paved with a high-performance concrete (HPC) with a 7~10 cm thickness. These types of pavements can achieve a long service life by reducing joint damage and increasing the abrasion and scaling resistance. In order to integrate the different bottom and top layer materials, autogenous shrinkage tests were performed in this study according to the mixing ratio of silica fume and polymer powder, which are the admixture of the top-layer material. RESULTS : Autogenous shrinkage decreased when polymer powder was used in the mix. Contrary to this, autogenous shrinkage tended to rise with increasing silica fume content. However, the effects were not significant when small amounts of polymer powder were used (3% and 11%). CONCLUSIONS : The durability and compressive strength increase when silica fume is used in the mix. The flexural strength considerably increases and autogenous shrinkage of concrete decreases when polymer powder is used in the mix. As seen from above, the proper use of these materials improves not only durability, but also autogenous shrinkage, leading to better shrinkage crack control in the concrete.

  • The LMC method of construction which have application to the road bridge is being considered the least relative importance about the watertight performance, because it focused on the durability of concrete. However, The LMC which is being expanded scope of application to the method of construction has grown importance about the watertight performance on the usability and maintenance side as well as durability. In this study, The latex concrete of two types which are different from mingled-ratio of the latex made a comparison to the compressive strength, watertight performance, dynamic wheel load resistance performance and confirmed what it has resistibility about chemical action through the chemical resistance test. The initial strength and watertight performance showed that were tendency the downward at 14 days. However, The long-term strength after 28 days showed that it has firm performance. In consequence, The initial curing of latex concrete is required to scrupulous care and attention at the site application. As a chemical resistance test result, The specimen that is steeped in sulphuric acid solution of 2% discovered the delamination phenomenon. However, it was confirmed that delamination phenomenon don't have an effect on the compressive strength. Moreover, As a dynamic wheel load resistance test result, The latex concrete was concluded to confirming the durability and running stability, because it had hardly any thickness reduction of latex concrete surface about dynamic wheel load and rarely found crack and delamination.

  • Recently, the antiwashout underwater concrete has been increasingly used for underwater structure such as high strength massive concrete structures. However, Concrete has poor quality ad durability due to dilution with separating cementitious material. In this study, specimens were made with antiwashout underwater concrete replaced with mineral admixtures to improve their properties and were placed in air, water, and salt water. To estimation the chloride ion permeation in concrete, ASTM C 1202 Test was performed. The experimental results demonstrate that the increase of the admixtures improved the properties of antiwashout underwater concrete.

  • The study was performed for the purpose of obtaining the fundamental data to improve the durability of concrete structures due to de-icing salts. To assume the degree of concrete deterioration, soluble chloride content in concrete, the depth of carbonation and compressive strength of core specimens were measured. The porgress of corrosion of concrete bridge was electrochemically monitored. The results show that the concrete structure was deteriorated and reinforced steel in concrete was corroded due to de-icing salts.

  • In recent years, concrete construction have become larger and higher and are demanding high performance concrete with lower heat to prevent thermal cracking, far greater workability, high strength and durability. Application of low heat portland(Type IV) cement for the high performance concrete is the best solution to satisfied those requirements. Here are explained the basic properties of fresh concrete as well as hardened concrete of high performance concrete using low that portland cement.

  • This study explored physical properties of a hardened cement and a concrete specimen using a high performance cement type solidification consisting of a weathered granite soil and a yellow soil mainly. Also the development of high performance cement type solidification was purposed for an intensity improvement and a long-term durability. As the experimental results, a mortar used by the weathered granite soil shows positive result, however using the yellow soil as a mortar Shows less positive result at the compressive strength. Also the dynamic modulus of elasticity measurement result, the concrete specimens used by the weathered granite and the yellow soil reached above 90%, so it seems to have the durability of freezing and thawing.

  • This study presents the effect of incorporating metakaolin (MK) on the mechanical and durability properties of high strength concrete for a constant water/binder ratio of 0.3.MK mixtures with cement replacement of 5, 10 and 15 % were designed for target strength and slump of 90 MPa and $100{\pm}25mm$. From the results, it was observed that 10 % replacement level was the optimum level in terms of compressive strength. Beyond 10 %replacement levels, the strength was decreased but remained higher than the control mixture. Compressive strength of 106 MPa was achieved at 10 % replacement. Splitting tensile strength and elastic modulus values have also followed the same trend. In durability tests MK concretes have exhibited high resistance compared to control and the resistance increases as the MK percentage increases. This investigation has shown that the local MK has the potential to produce high strength and high performance concretes.

  • Corrosion is one of the primary reasons why structures have limited durability. The present investigation is carried out to study the behavior of RC (Reinforced Concrete) structural members subjected to corrosion. Experimental investigations were carried out on National Bureau of Standard (NBS), RC beam specimens made of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) concrete. Load versus deflection behaviour was studied for different levels of corrosion i.e., 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%. It is observed that for every percentage increase in corrosion level, there is about 1.6% decrease in load carrying capacity. Also as the amount of corrosion increases there is a reduction in bond stress.

  • Recently, the construction of road, subway, railroad, and microtunnel for electricity supplement have been increased because of increasement of traffic in urban area, increasement of industrial transportation, and the network between cities in Korea. The deterioration of tunnel structure may occur by various internal and external factors and particularly, tunnel structures tend to contact with either underground water or harmful ions. Therefore, leakage sometimes occurred through the cracks and joints of concrete lining. The leakage in tunnel may affect the durability of concrete lining. In this study, to evaluate the durability and deterioration of concrete lining in tunnel structures, we were performed the various experiments for compressive strength. Compressive strength obtained from nondestructive inspection and compressive strength test varies according to the concrete lining conditions.

  • Ever since man learnt to build homes and cities around 10,000 years ago, clay materials has undoubtedly been one of the most widely-used construction materials in the world. However, the clay has poor strength, water resistance and durability, thus being limitedly used as calcined clay after being calcined. Pozzolan materials is to improve the strength and the durability of concrete as a result of the pozzolanic reaction. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyzes ingredient about clay mineral about Chung-buk area 10 places and to examine the application of clay minerals for the concrete admixtures.
