This study investigates a new method of using a concrete disk to calculate stress intensity factor (SIF) for mixed mode cases. The results indicate that the disk method is more accurate than three point bending test (TPB) in obtaining correct SIF values for mixed mode fracture propagation. Stress intensity factors $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$ are calculated using a center notched disk subjected to splitting load. The notch angle is calculated by finite element (FEM). Fracture toughness $K_\textsc{k}$ of the concrete is obtained from the load intensities at the initiation of crack propagation. According to the finite element analysis(FEA) and disk test, the results show that mode I and mixed mode cracks propagate toward the directions of crack face and loading point, respectively. The results from FEA with maximum stress theory compare well with the experimental date. Unlike TPB method where an accurate fracture toughness value is difficult to obtain due to the irregular shape of load deflection curve and delayed final crack propagation (following slow stable cracking). fracture toughness value is easily measured in the disk test from the crack initial load. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that disk method is more advantageous than TPB method in analyzing combined mode fracture problems.

It is difficult to obtain accurate fracture toughness values by RILEM committees proposed three point bend test(TPB) because the shape of load-deflection curve is irregular and final crack propagation occurs after some slow stable cracking. However, for disk test, fracture toughness is easily obtained from crack initial load. We examined the cracked high strength concrete disk and the experimental results were compared with the results by finite element analysis(FEA). Also we compared experimental fracture locus with theoretical fracture locus.
This article deals with the frequency analysis of viscoelastic sandwich disk with graphene nano-platelets (GPLs) reinforced viscoelastic concrete (GPLRVC) face sheets and honeycomb core. The honeycomb core is made of aluminum due to its low weight and high stiffness. The rule of the mixture and modified Halpin-Tsai model are engaged to provide the effective material constant of the concrete. By employing Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of the structure are derived and solved with the aid of the Generalize Differential Quadrature Method (GDQM). In this paper, viscoelastic properties are modeled according to Kelvin-Voigt viscoelasticity. The deflection as the function of time can be solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical method. Afterward, a parametric study is carried out to investigate the effects of the outer to inner radius ratio, hexagonal core angle, thickness to length ratio of the concrete, the weight fraction of GPLs into concrete, and the thickness of honeycomb core to inner radius ratio on the frequency of the viscoelastic sandwich disk with honeycomb core and FG-GPLRVC face sheet.

In this work, a depth-by-depth evaluation on the deterioration of concrete is suggested by utilizing disk shaped concrete specimens. Dynamic elastic modulus of cylindrical concrete was measured using a free-free resonance column method and compared with dynamic elastic modulus of disk-shaped concrete measured by impulse excitation technique(IET) and impact resonance(IR). According to the results of the experiment, both IET and IR methods showed a smaller difference in dynamic elastic modulus with smaller deviation in data when thickness of the disk specimen was increased. This trend was more evident from dynamic elastic modulus measured by IR method compared to that measured by IET. Variation in data was also smaller with the IR result. To increase the accuracy of the data, it is recommended to use the IR method for disk specimen with a diameter of 100mm and a thickness of 25mm.

Purpose of this paper is to determine the appropriate size of a center notched disk specimen for mode I fracture toughness $K_{IC}$. For this purpose, mode I test results with various sizes of center notched disk were compared with the RILEM three-point-bend test ones. Compressive strength of concrete used in this paper was 44.9 MPa. Diameters of 200, 300, 400 mm, thickness of 75, 100, 125 mm, and notch length ratios an of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 were used for the mode I disk test. Also, diameter of 300mm thickness of 100mm, and notch length ratios a/R of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 were used for the mixed mode disk test. Mixed mode stress intensity factors were investigated by changing notch angles for the disk specimen. Stress intensity factors of a center notched disk were calculated with the various methods for comparison. From the test results, mode I fracture toughness calculated from the disk specimen with diameter of 300 mm, thickness of Inn and notch length ratio a/R of 0.5 was very similar to the RILEM three-point-bend test ones. And it is verified that stress intensity factors for mixed mode can be easily calculated with the disk specimen.

The objective of this work was finding out the most advisable testing conditions for an effective and robust characterization of the tensile strength (TS) of concrete disks. The independent variables were the loading geometry, the angle subtended by the contact area, disk diameter and thickness, maximum aggregate size, and the sample compression strength (CS). The effect of the independent variables was studied in a three groups of experiments using a factorial design with two levels and four factors. The likeliest location where failure beginning was calculated using the equations that account for the stress-strain field developed within the disk. The theoretical outcome shows that for failure beginning at the geometric center of the sample, it is necessary for the contact angle in the loading setup to be larger than or equal to a threshold value. Nevertheless, the measured indirect tensile strength must be adjusted to get a close estimate of the uniaxial TS of the material. The correction depends on the loading geometry, and we got their mathematical expression and cross-validated them with the reported in the literature. The experimental results show that a loading geometry with a curved contact area, uniform load distribution over the contact area, loads projected parallel to one another within the disk, and a contact angle bigger of $12^{\circ}$ is the most advisable and robust setup for implementation of BT on concrete disks. This work provides a description of the BT carries on concrete disks and put forward a characterization technique to study costly samples of cement based material that have been enabled to display new and improved properties with nanomaterials.
It is difficult to obtain accurate fracture toughness values using three point bending test(TPB) proposed by RILEM committees because the shape of load-deflection curve is irregular and final crack propagation occurs after some slow stable cracking. However, fracture toughness is easily obtained from crack initiation load in the disk test. In this paper, the fracture properties of high strength concrete disks with center-crack was investigated. For this purpose, the experimental results were compared with the results by finite element analysis(FEA). And the experimental fracture locus was compared with theoretical fracture locus. Also, the results of fracture properties for the degree of concrete strength are presented. It is concluded from this study that results from FEA with maximum stress theory were compared well with the results from experiment. And the degree of concrete strength was contributed to the crack initiation load and fracture toughness, but was not contributed to the failure angle. Also, The discrepancy of fracture locus between the maximum stress theory and the experiment for concrete is considered to depend upon a large energy requirement for inducing the mixed-mode and sliding mode fractures.
PURPOSES : The objective of this study was to develop an impact resonance (IR) test procedure for thin disk-shaped specimens in order to determine the ${\mid}E^*{\mid}$ and phase angle values of various asphalt mixtures. METHODS : An IR test procedure was developed for evaluating thin disk-shaped specimens, in order to determine the dynamic modulus (${\mid}E^*{\mid}$) of various asphalt mixtures. The IR test method that was developed to determine the elastic modulus values of Portland cement concrete was evaluated, which method uses axisymmetric flexural vibration proposed by Leming et al. (1996). The IR tests were performed on three different mixtures of New York with varying nominal maximum aggregate sizes (NY9.5, NY19, and NY25) at six different temperatures ($10-60^{\circ}C$). The ${\mid}E^*{\mid}$ values obtained from the IR tests were compared with those determined by the commonly used AASHTO T342-11 test. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : The IR test method was employed to determine the ${\mid}E^*{\mid}$ values of thin-disk-shaped specimens of various asphalt mixtures. It was found that the IR test method when used with thin disk-like specimens is a simple, practical, and cheap tool for determining the ${\mid}E^*{\mid}$ values of field cores. Further, it was found the ${\mid}E^*{\mid}$ values obtained from the IR tests using thin disk-like specimens were almost similar to those obtained using the AASHTO T342-11 test.

Fracture toughness is a material property for crack initiation and propagation in fracture mechanics. For mode I fracture toughness measurement in concrete, RILEM committees 89-FMT proposed three-point bend tests based on the two-parameter fracture model. But, there is no proposed test method as a standard for mixed mode test for now. And RILEM three-point bend test procedure is complicate. Therefore, in this study, brazilian disks of various size were designed as the concrete with a similar specified concrete strength and maximum size of coarse aggregate($G_{max}$) were respectively 20mm and 40mm. And mode I fracture toughness of brazilian disks was compared with that of RILEM three-point bend test. As a result, it was suggested appropriate size(thickness, diameter) and notch length ratio of brazilan disk on the $G_{max}$. And it was verified that stress intensity factors for mixed mode can be easily calculated with the disk specimen. Stress intensity factors of a concrete brazilian disk were evaluated with finite element analysis and five terms approximation for comparison.

A new approach for measuring the specific fracture energy of concrete denoted modified disk-shaped compact tension (MDCT) test is presented. The procedure is based on previous ideas regarding the use of compact tension specimens for studying the fracture behavior of concrete but implies significant modifications of the specimen morphology in order to avoid premature failures (such as the breakage of concrete around the pulling load holes). The manufacturing and test performance is improved and simplified, enhancing the reliability of the material characterization. MDCT specimens are particularly suitable when fracture properties of already casted concrete structures are required. To evaluate the applicability of the MDCT test to estimate the size-independent specific fracture energy of concrete ($G_F$),the interaction between the fracture process zone of concrete andthe boundary of theMDCTspecimens at the end of the test is properly analyzed. Further, the experimental results of $G_F$ obtained by MDCT tests for normal- and high-strength self-compacting concrete mixes are compared with those obtained using the well-established three-point bending test. The procedure proposed furnishes promising results, and the $G_F$ values obtained are reliable enough for the specimen size range studied in this work.
