The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of concept mapping strategies on the learner's achievement and their attitude change in science learning. The subject was 159 male students in a middle school in Seoul. Three experimental groups were instructed with different kinds of teaching methods about the unit of photosynthesis and digestive organs. Group I was instructed with traditional teaching method, GroupII was instructed with guided concept mapping strategy, GroupIII was instructed with student-centered concept mapping strategy. The major findings of this study are as follows. 1. Student-centered concept mapping strategy was observed effective at 0.05 significance level in achievement and retention. 2. Only student-centered concept mapping strategy changed students' attitude toward science learning positively. 3. It was observed that there was very significant correlation between the learning ability and science achievement (p<0.01). 4. Student-centered concept mapping strategy was found effective in upper learning-ability group, and guided concept mapping strategy in middle learning-ability group(p < 0.05). 5. Student-centered concept mapping strategy was effective to the groups of upper and middle learning-ability in changing students' attitude toward science learning(p < 0.05).
This study selected 113 gifted underachievers and 128 gifted achievers from 17 elementary schools to examine gifted children's personal characteristics(self-concept, locus of control, and learning habits) that have an effect on underachievement. Self-concept(general self-concept and academic self-concept), locus of control, and learning habits(endurance, learning strategy, and learning motivation) variables were analyzed to determine gifted underachievers' personal characteristics. (1) Comparison of personal characteristics of gifted achievers with gifted underachievers indicated gifted underachievers had low self-concept, external locus to control, and problems in learning habits. (2) The sub factors of habits of learning motivation and learning strategy had the greatest effect on underachievement of gifted children.

In this study, a concept learning strategy emphasizing social consensus during discussion (SCS) was developed. The instructional effects of this strategy were compared with those of cognitive conflict strategy (CCS) and traditional instruction in the aspects of students' achievement, conceptions, communication apprehension, perceptions of science learning environment, and perceptions of small group discussion. There were no significant differences in the scores of an achievement test. For the students of low communication competency, however, the scores of the CCS group were significantly higher than those of the traditional group. The adjusted mean of the SCS group was higher than those of the other groups in a conceptions test. The social consensus strategy was also found to be more effective in learning concept for those who were more competent in communicating. No significant differences were found in the communication apprehension. The scores of three groups did not differ significantly in the subcategories of 'personal relevance' and 'students' negotiation' of the test of the perceptions of science learning environment. However, the students in the SCS group scored higher in 'participation'. The students in the SCS group perceived small group discussions more positively.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the intercorrelations among various motivational patterns and learning strategies and to examine the differences in motivation and strategy usage in terms of students' science achievement level, gender, and grade. A questionnaire on achievement goal, self-efficacy, self-concept of ability, expectancy, value, causal attributions, and learning strategies was administered to 360 junior high/high school students (178 males, 182 females). Students who adopted performance-oriented goal tended not to be task oriented. Task-oriented students had high levels of self-efficacy, high self-concept of ability, and expectancies for future performance in science. They also valued science and attributed thier failures to the lack of effort. However, performance-oriented students evaluated their ability negatively, did not value science, and attributed thier failures to uncontrollable causes. With respect to learning strategy, task-oriented students tended to use deep-level strategy, whereas performance-oriented students tended to use surface-level strategy and not to use deep-level strategy. High-achieving students, boys, and junior high school students were more task-oriented, evaluated their ability more positively, and valued science more than low-achieving students, girls, and high school students, respectively. High-achieving students and boys also used deep-level strategy more than each of their counterparts. However, no significant difference in learning strategy was found between junior high school students and high school students. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of physics learning through the teaching-learning strategy of phased context in introductory physics classes. The participants in the study included 35 university freshmen. The teaching-learning strategy of phased context were developed by idealizing, extending and comparing contexts which were then applied in introductory physics classes : six hour classes about straight line motion, two-dimensional motion and Newton's laws of motion. The effects of the physics learning were then analyzed by the FCI (Force Concept Inventory) and MPEX (Maryland Survey on Physics Expectation) questionnaires. The results showed that the teaching-learning strategy of phased context helped change the force concept and did not change the belief about physics learning. Finally, based on the results of the study, we discuss possible educational implications for phased context in introductory physics classes.
The purposes of this study were grasping the degree of students' understanding for course contents through the concept mapping strategy as meaningful learning in science and measuring the effect for change of conception and changing the misconception. The results of the study were as follows: 1. Before the lesson, only 10.7% of students had scientific conception of molecular motion. Other students had various kinds of misconceptions. 2. The extent of concept formation after lesson through the using concept mapping strategy was tested. As a result, compared with the controlled group, the experimental group showed higher extent of sound concept formation (statistical significance level 0.05). 3. The differences between the experimental group and the control group were analyzed into quantitative and qualitative points of view. The results of the comparison showed that the maps of the students were well configured in the categories of the relationship, the hierarchy and the examples; while students showed lower abilities in the category of the cross-links. 4. The student's attitudes to ward concept mapping was positive. Most of the students answered that teaching strategy of concept mapping benefits them in meaningful learning outcomes.
The concept field is defined as the schema of all equivalent definitions of a mathematics concept. Concept system is defined as the schema of a group concept network where there are mathematics relations. Proposition field is defined as the schema of all equivalent proposition sets. Proposition system is defined as a schema of proposition sets where one mathematics proposition at least is "derived" from the other proposition. CPFS structure that consists of concept field, concept system proposition field, proposition system describes more precisely mathematics cognitive structure, and reveals the unique psychological phenomena and laws in mathematics learning.

This study investigates the effect of play-based software education instruction strategy for improving computational thinking as a method of software education. The play-based instruction strategy is a teaching-learning strategy in which the presented code is navigated through play, and the functions are revised and newly reconstructed. We designed an education program with the play-based instruction strategy and applied the program to elementary students. In order to verify the effectiveness of the research, we examined the competence of computing thinking concept and computing thinking practice. As a result, the computing thinking concept and computational thinking practice were that the proposed teaching-learning model is higher than the direct teaching method.

Many organizations have had deep interests in studies concerning leadership and in academic areas, in not only management but also psychology. Until now, leadership has been accentuated by managers or team leaders especially. Recently, however, the concept of self-leadership directing one's own activities through self-control or self-management is being focused on practices and in academia. This study is to investigate the influence between self-leadership strategies and learning performance in IT classes mediated by attitude of attendance focused on the social science students in a university. Research results can give us direction of task-taking attitudes in firms or learning attitudes in teaching organizations and implications to human resource managers who are in charge of improving learning performance or productivity.

In this study, the effects of reciprocal peer questioning (RPQ) strategy upon students' concept learning were investigated. Ninety-two seventh graders at a co-ed middle school were assigned to control, reciprocal peer tutoring (RPT), and RPQ groups. The students were taught about 'three states of matter' and 'motion of molecules' for 12 class hours. Regardless of students' prior science achievement level, the RPQ group showed the highest scores among the three groups in the test of conceptual understanding, and the RPT group performed better than the control group. For high-level students, the scores of the RPQ group were significantly higher than those of the other groups in the test of the concept application, and those of the RPT group were higher than those of the control group. For low-level students, the scores of the RPT and RPQ groups in the concept application test were significantly higher than those of the control group, while those of the RPT and RPQ groups were not significantly different. These results indicated that verbal interaction by reciprocal tutoring helped students to understand chemical concept learning, and that using self-generated questions was more effective. Therefore, RPQ strategy is suggested to become one of the useful instructional methods to facilitate verbal interaction and concept learning in middle school science instructions.
