한국의 지역개발과 댐건설 (Regional Development And Dam Construction in Korea)

  • Because of differences in thoughts and ideology, our country, Korea has been deprived of national unity for some thirty years of time and tide. To achieve peaceful unification, the cultivation of national strength is of paramount importance. This national strength is also essential if Korea is to take rightful place in the international societies and to have the confidence of these societies. However, national strength can never be achieved in a short time. The fundamental elements in economic development that are directly conducive to the cultivation of national strength can be said to lie in -a stable political system, -exertion of powerful leadership, -cultivation of a spirit of diligence, self-help and cooperation, -modernization of human brain power, and -establishment of a scientific and well planned economic policy and strong enforcement of this policy. Our country, Korea, has attained brilliant economic development in the past 15 years under the strong leadership of president Park Chung Hee. However, there are still many problems to be solved. A few of them are: -housing and home problems, -increasing demand for employment, -increasing demand for staple food and -the need to improve international balance of payment. Solution of the above mentioned problems requires step by step scientific development of each sector and region of our contry. As a spearhead project in regional development, the Saemaul Campaign or new village movement can be cited. The campaign is now spreading throughout the country like a grass fire. However, such campaigns need considerable encouragement and support and the means for the desired development must be provided if the regional and sectoral development program is to sucdceed. The construction of large multipurpose dams in major river basin plays significant role in all aspects of national, regional and sectoral development. It ensures that the water resource, for which there is no substitute, is retained and utilized for irrigation of agricultural areas, production of power for industry, provision of water for domestic and industrial uses and control of river water. Water is the very essence of life and we must conserve and utilize what we have for the betterment of our peoples and their heir. The regional and social impact of construction of a large dam is enormous. It is intended to, and does, dras tically improve the "without-project" socio-economic conditions. A good example of this is the Soyanggang multipurpose dam. This project will significantly contribute to our national strength by utilizing the stored water for the benefit of human life and relief of flood and drought damages. Annual average precipitation in Korea is 1160mm, a comparatively abundant amount. The catchment areas of the Han River, Keum River, and Youngsan River are $62,755\textrm{km}^2$, accounting for 64% of the national total. Approximately 62% of the national population inhabits in this area, and 67% of the national gross product comes from the area. The annual population growth rate of the country is currently estimated at 1.7%, and every year the population growth in urban area increases at a rising rate. The population of Seoul, Pusan, and Taegu, the three major cities in Korea, is equal to one third of our national total. According to the census conducted on October 1, 1975, the population in the urban areas has increased by 384,000, whereas that in rural areas has decreased by 59,000,000 in the past five years. The composition of population between urban and rural areas varied from 41%~59% in 1959 to 48%~52% in 1975. To mitigate this treand towards concentration of population in urban areas, employment opportunities must be provided in regional and rural areas. However, heavy and chemical industries, which mitigate production and employment problems at the same time, must have abundant water and energy. Also increase in staple food production cannot be attained without water. At this point in time, when water demand is rapidly growing, it is essential for the country to provide as much a reservoir capacity as possible to capture the monsoon rainfall, which concentarated in the rainy seaon from June to Septesmber, and conserve the water for year round use. The floods, which at one time we called "the devil" have now become a source of immense benefit to Korea. Let me explain the topographic condition in Korea. In northern and eastern areas we have high mountains and rugged country. Our rivers originate in these mountains and flow in a general southerly or westerly direction throught ancient plains. These plains were formed by progressive deposition of sediments from the mountains and provide our country with large areas of fertile land, emminently suited to settlement and irrigated agricultural development. It is, therefore, quite natural that these areas should become the polar point for our regional development program. Hower, we are fortunate in that we have an additional area or areas, which can be used for agricultural production and settlement of our peoples, particularly those peoples who may be displaced by the formation of our reservoirs. I am speaking of the tidelands along the western and southern coasts. The other day the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery informed the public of a tideland reclamation of which 400,000 hectares will be used for growing rice as part of our national food self-sufficiency programme. Now, again, we arrive at the need for water, as without it we cannot realize this ambitious programme. And again we need those dams to provide it. As I mentioned before, dams not only provide us with essential water for agriculture, domestic and industrial use, but provide us with electrical energy, as it is generally extremely economical to use the water being release for the former purposes to drive turbines and generators. At the present time we have 13 hydro-electric power plants with an installed capacity of 711,000 kilowatts equal to 16% of our national total. There are about 110 potential dams ites in the country, which could yield about 2,300,000 kilowatts of hydro-electric power. There are about 54 sites suitable for pumped storage which could produce a further 38,600,000 kilowatts of power. All available if we carefully develop our water resources. To summarize, water resource development is essential to the regional development program and the welfare of our people, it must proceed hand-in-hand with other aspects of regional development such as land impovement, high way extension, development of our forests, erosion control, and develop ment of heavy and chemical industries. Through the successful implementation of such an integrated regional development program, we can look forward to a period of national strength, and due recognition of our country by the worlds societies.

Probiotics를 양식넙치에 투여시 Streptococcus iniae에 대한 면역반응 및 병저항성 (Dietary Administration of Probiotics, Bacillus sp. IS-2, Enhance the Innate Immune Response and Disease Resistance of Paralichthys olivaceus against Streptococcus iniae)

  • 본 연구는 양식 넙치 Paralichthys olivaceus 사료 내 생균제 첨가가 넙치의 성장, 면역반응 및 병저항성에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. 실험사료는 넙치용 배합사료(조단백질 52%, 조지방 11%, 조섬유 3%, 조회분 14%, 인 2.7%, 칼슘 1.5%, Suhyup Co., Korea)에 Bacillus sp. IS-2를 첨가하여 $10^3$, $10^5$, $10^7$ CFU/kg의 실험사료를 제작하였다. 2주간의 예비사육 후, 평균무게 $210{\pm}13g$인 실험어를 1,000 L 원형수조에 실험구 당 70마리씩 무작위로 배치하여 실험사료를 1일 2회 어체 중의 2%씩 12주 동안 공급하였다. 성장도 조사 결과 모든 실험구에서는 일반사료를 투여한 대조구에 비해 높은 성장률을 나타내었으며 $10^5$ CFU/kg 실험구에서는 대조구에 비해 약 13% 정도 높은 성장률을 나타내었다. 혈액분석 결과에는 glucose를 제외한 GOT, GPT, 단백질, 총콜레스테롤 등에서 실험구간 유의적인 차이를 나타내지 않아 생균제로 인한 간독성이나 어체 내 문제가 발생하지 않은 것으로 사료된다. Glucose인 경우 실험 종료 시점에서 증가되는 변화를 확인 할 수 있었는데 이는 수온, 수질에 의한 일시적인 현상이라 사료된다. Respiratory burst activity (NBT assay)에 있어서는 실험사료를 공급한 실험구가 대조구에 비해 높은 값을 확인할 수 있었으며 특히 $10^5$ CFU/kg 실험구와 $10^7$ CFU/kg 실험구에서 유의적으로 높은 값을 확인하였다. 혈청의 lysozyme 및 백혈구 활성에 있어서도 실험사료를 투여한 실험구에서 대조구에 비해 높은 활성을 확인 하였다. 공격실험 결과, Streptococcus inae를 접종한지 5일째부터 폐사가 시작되어 7일째 일반사료를 투여한 대조구에서는 100% 폐사율을 보인 반면, $10^3$ CFU/kg 실험구에서는 73%의 폐사율을 $10^5$ CFU/kg 실험구에서는 53%의 폐사율을 나타냈으며, $10^7$ CFU/kg 실험구에서는 45%의 폐사율을 보여 대조구에 비해 많게는 55% 이상의 높은 생존율을 나타내었다. 사료 내 첨가한 Bacillus sp. IS-2의 장내 생존 확인을 위해 실험이 종료 된 후 모든 실험구와 대조구 실험어의 장을 분리하여 배양 된 균체를 DNA를 분리 한 후에 제작 된 ditection primer를 이용한 PCR 결과 일반사료를 투여한 대조구를 제외한 모든 실험구에서 1,465 bp의 PCR product를 확인 할 수 있었다. 상기 결과를 토대로 양식넙치 사료 내 Bacillus sp. IS-2의 첨가는 양식넙치의 성장 및 면역증강, S. iniae에 대한 병정항성에 좋은 효과를 나타내어 사료첨가제로써의 이용 가능성이 클 것이라 사료된다.

In Vitro 과산화지질에 미치는 glutathione 고함유 효모 Saccharomyces cerevisiae FF-8의 항산화효과 (The Antioxidative Activity of Glutathione-Enriched Extract from Saccharomyces cerevisiae FF-8 in In Vitro Model System)

  • 항산화물질인 glutathione (${\gamma}$-L-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine) 고함유 효모 Saccharomyces cerevisiae FF-8에서 생산된 glutathione을 함유한 세포 추출액의 항산화 활성을 in vitro 과산화지질 실험계인 DPPH($a,{\;}\acute{a}-diphenyl-\beta-picrylhydrazyl$)법, linoleic acid를 이용한 ferric thiocyanate법과 TBA법 및 microsome 생체막 지질 과산화물 생성정도의 TBARS법으로 측정하였다. YM 최적 배지에서 생산된 glutathione 농도는 $204\mug/ml$로 YM 기본배지에서 생산된 glutathione 농도 $74\mug/ml$보다 2.76배 증가하였다. 본 실험에서는 YM 기본배지와 최적배지에서 S. cerevisiae FF-8이 생산하는 glutathione 함량에 따른 항산화 활성을 비교하였다. DPPH 측정법에서는 짙은 자색의 탈색되는 정도로 나타내는 전자 공여능이 glutathione 함량이 높은 최적 생산배지에서 S. cerevisiae FF-8가 생산하는 glutathione고함유 세포 추출액에서 대조구인 $ 0.05\%BHT $와 비슷한 수준으로 항산화 활성이 높게 나타났다. 각 조직 microsome을 이용한 생체막 지질 과산화 억제정도는 최적 생산배지에서 전체적으로 높게 나타났으며, 간장 $60.98\%$, 신장 $56.43\%$, 심장 $52.91\%$, 뇌 $52.13\%$, 고환$45.57\%$ 및 비장 $42.95\%$순으로 나타났다 Linoleic acid 산화 실험계를 이용한 ferric thiocyanate법에서는 최적 생산배지가 반응 7일째까지 대조구에 비해 강한 항산화 활성을 보였으며, TBA법에서는 반응 5일째까지 최적 생산배지가 YM 배지보다는 높은 항산화 활성을 나타내었다 이상의 결과에서 Saccharomyces cerevisiae FF-8 균주가 glutathione을 생산하는 최적배지 조건에서 생산된 glutathione 고함유 세포 추출액은 in vitro 항산화 실험계인 DPPH radical scavenging activity, ferric thiocyanate and TBARS 측정에서 항산화 활성을 나타내는 생리활성 성분을 지닌 것으로 나타나 천연 항산화제로서의 사용 가능성을 시사하였다.

남강유역 간흡충감염의 역학적 조사연구 (Epidemiological Studios on Clonorchis sinensis Infection along the Nam-river in Gyeongnam Province, Korea)

  • An epidemiological study on Clonorchis sinensis infection along the Nam-river (total length ; 186km) flowing in Gyeongsang-nam-do, southern part of Korea, was carried out. Formalin-ether concentration technique and Stoll's egg counting method were employed to figure out the prevalence of C. sinensis infection. For the detection of cercariae from Parafossarulus sp., the snail host of C. sinensis, each snail was placed in aerated tap water, and examined for expelled cercariae. For observing the metacercariae the fresh water fish favorably eaten in raw conditions wore prepared by means of pressing the muscles between two slide glasses and/or by digesting them with artificial gastric juice. The fresh water fish were fed to the rabbits to get the worms and to identify the morphology of adult C. sinensis. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Overall Prevalence of C. sinensis infection was 38.75 from 5,291 examinees; 44.15 (1,408 out of 3,196) in male and 30.4% (637 out of 2,095) in female. 2. The prevalence rates were 42.0% at the upper stream, 41.2% around the vicinity of Jinyanglake, 34.2% at Jinju city, 34.2% at middle stream and 40.3% at down stream regions, respectively. 3. By age, the highest positive rate (53.4∼54.3%) was observed in 30 to 59 years of age. In this age group, the rate in males was 59.7∼62.2%, and in females 42.2∼44.4%, In the age group of less than 19 years it was 7.5∼20.9%. 4. By social strata, the positive rate was 16.5% in the primary school children, 22.6% in school students, 46.2% in teachers and local officers and 49.6% in the general inhabitants. 5. The quantitative examinations with the stool collected from clonorchiasis cases revealed that the light infection (less than 4,000/EPG) was 53.6%, moderate infection (4,001∼10,000 /EPG) 30.3% and heavy infection (more than 10,001/EPG) 16.1%, respectively. More than half of total cases examined were light infection, and 73.2% of female examinees were lightly infected with this cuke. 6. The average value of EPG was 4,963 (male, 6,057; female, 2,557 and the highest value was obtained from the age group of 30 to 59 years (5,240∼6,454). 7. The prevalence of Metagonimus yokogawai infection in humans was 5.5%, and 89.8% of metagonimiasis cases wore double-infected arith C. sinensis. The highest prevalence rate was observed in Jinju city (11.2%). 8. Total of 5,005 Parafossarulus sp., the snail intermediate host of C. sinensis, were examined for the detection of cercariae. The cercarial expulsion rate was 0.34%, and the snails collected in Jin-yang-lake side and in the down stream expelled mainly the cercariae of C, sinensis. 9. About 788 cercariaejday (range: 127∼1,503) were expelled daily from a snail naturally infected with C. sinensis. The snails which released more than 1,000 cercariae/day were 30.8% out of total collected. A snail uniquely released 5,840 cercariae/day in this study. 10. The other trematode cercariae besides C. sinensis were also detected, and the rates out of total snails were the cercariae of Losogenes liberum 6.71%, Cyathocotyle orientalis 0.26%, Notocotylus attenuatus 2.52% and Mucobucaris 0.54%, 11. Ten out of 18 species of fresh water fish caught along the river harbored the metacercariae of C, sinensis. The highest rate of metacercarial infection in fish was detected in Pseudorasbora larva (85.9%). The fish mainly eaten by the inhabitants along the Nam-river, and the metacercarial infection rates were: Zacco platypus 8.0%, Hemibarbus sp. 18.2∼26.7%, Gnathepcgcn sp. 37.5%, Ischikauia steenackeri 42.9% and Pseudogobio esocinus 16.7%. 12. Out of 36 P. larva, the number of metacercariae were about 109 (ranEe; 18∼446) per fish and 27 per gram of flesh. The fish caught in spring harbored the highest number of metacercariae. As indicated above, the prevalence of C. sinensis infection in the inhabitants residing around the Nam-river was relatively high. The farther toward the upper stream areas, the higher was the positive rate of C. sinensis infection, and most of clonorchiasis cases were lightly infected. The snail hosts of C. sinensis distributed all around the Nam-river. Several species of freshwater fish were infected with the metacercariae of C. sinensis and the infection rates were relatively high. To prevent C. sinensis infection in the endemic areas, the effective health education system is suggested as a control measure, although mass treatment is also expected to be useful, using chemotherapeutic agents such as "praziquantel", a recently developed anthelminthic for C. sinensis inftraction.

체외순환시 혈액학적 상황에 대한 고용량 Transamine의 유익한 효과 (Beneficial Effects of High-Dose Transamine on Hematologic Aspects in Cardiopulmonary Bypass)

  • 연구배경 : 본 연구의 목적은 체외순환전 투여한 고용량 transamine이 술후 출혈 및 수혈을 포함한 여러 가지 혈액학적 상황에 미치는 임상적 효과를 자체적으로 조사함에 있다. 재료 및 방법 : 본 연구는 무작위로 선택한 40명의 성인 개심술 환자들을 대상으로 시행되었다. 대상환자들을 두 그룹으로 나누었는데, Transmine 군(T-군, n=20)은 체외순환전 및 동안 고용량(10 g) transamine을 투여한 환자군 이고 Placebo 군(P-군, n=20)은 일정량의 생리식염수를 투여한 환자군이다. 결과 : \circled1 체외순환 동안 섬유소원의 농도 및 혈소판수는 P-군이 T-군 보다 의미있게 낮았다 (p<0.01). \circled2 체외순환 동안 D-dimer는 P-군의 경우 20명 중 18명에서 검출되었으나 T-군에서는 전혀 검출되지 않아 양군간 유의한 차이가 있었다( p<0.0001). \circled3 체외순환 종료시 기준치에 대한 섬유소원의 농도 및 혈소판수의 백분률이 T-군에서는 70.2$\pm$3.9%, 72.4$\pm$4.5%인데 비해 P-군에서는 54.5$\pm$4.0%, 64.3$\pm$2.9%로서 T-군이 P-군 보다 의미있게 더 높았다( p<0.01). \circled4 술후 PT 및 aPTT의 실측치가 T-군에서는 14.0$\pm$0.0초 및 27.6$\pm$0.1초였고 P-군에서는 16.4$\pm$0.0, 30.1$\pm$0.1초로서 T-군이 P-군보다 의미있게 더 낮았다( p<0.05). \circled5 시간대별 술후 출혈량과 술후 전혈 혹은 혈액제재의 튜여량 모두 T-군이 P-군에 비하여 유의하게 적었다( p<0.01). \circled6 양군 모두에서 뇌색전증, 심근경색, 폐색전증등과 같은 과응고 반응에 기인하는 합병증은 관찰되지 않았다. 결론 : 이상의 결과로 미루어 술전 고용량 transamine 투여는 체외순환 동안 섬유소 용해계의 활성을 억제해 주고 혈액제제 투여량을 감소시켜 주었으며 고용량투여에 의한 합병증도 나타나지 않았기 때문에 transamin은 술후 출혈을 줄이기 위한 안전하고 효과적인 약물인 것으로 사료되었다.

겨우살이(Viscum album)와 칡뿌리(Pueraria radix) 추출물의 NF-κB활성 억제 및 항산화 효과 (Downregulatory Effect of Extracts from Mistletoe (Viscum album) and Pueraria Root (Pueraria radix) on Cellular NF-κB Activation and heir Antioxidant Activity)

  • 다양한 생리활성을 지닌 천연물 겨우살이와 칡뿌리 추출물의 인체피부조직세포에서 NF-$textsc{k}$B촬성에 대한조절효과와 이들 추출물의 지질 과산화물 생성 억제 및 라디칼 소거활성, reducing power와 관련된 항산화적 활성을 조사하였다. 본 실험 에 사용한 모든 시료들은 세포독성을 보이지 않는 수준에서 NF-$textsc{k}$B 활성 을 억 제 했다. 칡뿌리 추출물은 0.5 mg 농도에서 35%로 vitamin C 10 mM(8.8 mg,53%)과 함께 유의적인 NF-$textsc{k}$B활성 억제효과를 보였다(p<0.05).또한 칡뿌리 추출물은 겨우살이 추출물보다 상대적으로 더 높은 NF-$textsc{k}$B활성 억제 효과를 보였다. 겨우살이 추출물의 NF-$textsc{k}$B활성 억제 효과는 10%로 낮았지 만,지질 과산화물에 대한 항산화 효과는 5 mg 이상의 농도에서 63% 이상으로 칡뿌리 추출물보다 높았다. 겨우살이와 칡뿌리 추출물은 동일 농도 10 mg에서 vitamin C의 항산화 효과, 48%보다 각각 유의적으로 높은 56%와 75%의 항산화 활성을 보였다. 라디칼 소거활성에 대하여 칡뿌리 추출물이 겨우살이 추출물보다 동일농도에서 더 강한 소거활성을 나타냈다. 잘 알려진 항산화제 vitamin C와 비교해 볼 때, DPPH test에서 이 두 추출물은 vitamin C만큼 강한 라디칼 소거활성을 보이지는 않았다. 그러나 NO test에서 칡 뿌리 추출물의 SCn은 88 Ug으로 vitamin C($SC_{50}$/, 77 $\mu$g)만큼 강한 항산화 활성을 보였다(p<0.05). 칡뿌리 추출물의 항산화 활성은 reducing power측정 에서도 겨우살이 추출물보다 높게 나타났으나, vitamin C의 환원력보다는 매우 낮은 활성을 보였다. 본 연구의 전체 결과를 통해서, 강한 라디칼 소거활성을 지닌 칡뿌리 추출물과 상대적으로 높은 지질 과산화 억제 효과를 보인 겨우살이 추출물은 천연 항산화제로 제안될 수 있는 것으로 판단되었다. 또한 vitamin C와 칡뿌리 추출물의 결과처럼 천연 추출물의 인체피부조직세포에서 NF-$textsc{k}$B활성 조절 효과의 일부는 이들 천연 추출물이 지닌 라디칼 소거활성 또는reducing power의 항산화 활성의 역할에 의한 것으로 제안되었다.

Controlled Atmosphere (CA) 환경설정 해제 후 저온저장이 '후지' 과실의 품질에 미치는 영향 (Fruit Quality Characteristics of 'Fuji' Apple Fruits in Response to Air Storage after CA Storage)

  • 본 연구는 '후지' 과실을 대상으로 저온저장(온도: $0{\pm}1^{\circ}C$)을 1개월 처리한 후 CA 저장(CA 저장 조건: $O_2$ $2.5{\pm}0.5$%, $CO_2$ $1.5{\pm}0.5$%, 온도: $0{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) 4개월 + 저온저장 3개월(CA 4M + Air 3M), CA 저장 5개월 + 저온저장 2개월(CA 5M + Air 2M), CA 저장 6개월 + 저온저장 1개월(CA 6M + Air 1M)로 처리하였고, CA 저장은 수확 후 즉시 처리한 다음 저장기간에 따라 과실 내부갈변증상과 과실품질에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 과실의 내부갈변 증상은 일반 CA 저장에서는 저장 4개월 후에 17.1%로 시작하여 저장 7개월 후에는 30.2%로 매우 높은 발생을 보였다. 그러나 CA 4M + Air 3M 처리구와 CA 5M + Air 2M 처리구는 과실 내부갈변증상이 전혀 나타나지 않았다. 각 처리별 호흡량의 변화는 저장 6개월까지는 차이가 없었고, 저장 7개월 후에는 CA 4M + Air 3M 처리구와 CA 5M + Air 2M 처리구가 낮은 호흡량을 보였다. 에틸렌 및 내생 에틸렌 발생량은 일반 CA 저장에서는 가장 낮았고, CA 환경해제기간이 빠를수록 다소 높은 발생량을 보였다. 과실품질에서 처리별 경도와 산 함량의 변화를 보면 일반 CA 저장에 비하여 CA 저장 4, 5, 6개월 후 저온저장처리간에는 차이가 없었다. 따라서 과실의 저장력 향상을 위하여 지속적인 CA 저장을 하기보다는 CA 저장 5개월 후에 환경설정을 해제하고 저온저장을 유지하여도 과실품질을 유지할 수 있었다.

  • Engineers have developed new instruments that aid in diagnosis and therapy Ultrasonic imaging has provided a nondamaging method of imaging internal organs. A complex transducer emits ultrasonic waves at many angles and reconstructs a map of internal anatomy and also velocities of blood in vessels. Fast computed tomography permits reconstruction of the 3-dimensional anatomy and perfusion of the heart at 20-Hz rates. Positron emission tomography uses certain isotopes that produce positrons that react with electrons to simultaneously emit two gamma rays in opposite directions. It locates the region of origin by using a ring of discrete scintillation detectors, each in electronic coincidence with an opposing detector. In magnetic resonance imaging, the patient is placed in a very strong magnetic field. The precessing of the hydrogen atoms is perturbed by an interrogating field to yield two-dimensional images of soft tissue having exceptional clarity. As an alternative to radiology image processing, film archiving, and retrieval, picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) are being implemented. Images from computed radiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, and ultrasound are digitized, transmitted, and stored in computers for retrieval at distributed work stations. In electrical impedance tomography, electrodes are placed around the thorax. 50-kHz current is injected between two electrodes and voltages are measured on all other electrodes. A computer processes the data to yield an image of the resistivity of a 2-dimensional slice of the thorax. During fetal monitoring, a corkscrew electrode is screwed into the fetal scalp to measure the fetal electrocardiogram. Correlations with uterine contractions yield information on the status of the fetus during delivery To measure cardiac output by thermodilution, cold saline is injected into the right atrium. A thermistor in the right pulmonary artery yields temperature measurements, from which we can calculate cardiac output. In impedance cardiography, we measure the changes in electrical impedance as the heart ejects blood into the arteries. Motion artifacts are large, so signal averaging is useful during monitoring. An intraarterial blood gas monitoring system permits monitoring in real time. Light is sent down optical fibers inserted into the radial artery, where it is absorbed by dyes, which reemit the light at a different wavelength. The emitted light travels up optical fibers where an external instrument determines O2, CO2, and pH. Therapeutic devices include the electrosurgical unit. A high-frequency electric arc is drawn between the knife and the tissue. The arc cuts and the heat coagulates, thus preventing blood loss. Hyperthermia has demonstrated antitumor effects in patients in whom all conventional modes of therapy have failed. Methods of raising tumor temperature include focused ultrasound, radio-frequency power through needles, or microwaves. When the heart stops pumping, we use the defibrillator to restore normal pumping. A brief, high-current pulse through the heart synchronizes all cardiac fibers to restore normal rhythm. When the cardiac rhythm is too slow, we implant the cardiac pacemaker. An electrode within the heart stimulates the cardiac muscle to contract at the normal rate. When the cardiac valves are narrowed or leak, we implant an artificial valve. Silicone rubber and Teflon are used for biocompatibility. Artificial hearts powered by pneumatic hoses have been implanted in humans. However, the quality of life gradually degrades, and death ensues. When kidney stones develop, lithotripsy is used. A spark creates a pressure wave, which is focused on the stone and fragments it. The pieces pass out normally. When kidneys fail, the blood is cleansed during hemodialysis. Urea passes through a porous membrane to a dialysate bath to lower its concentration in the blood. The blind are able to read by scanning the Optacon with their fingertips. A camera scans letters and converts them to an array of vibrating pins. The deaf are able to hear using a cochlear implant. A microphone detects sound and divides it into frequency bands. 22 electrodes within the cochlea stimulate the acoustic the acoustic nerve to provide sound patterns. For those who have lost muscle function in the limbs, researchers are implanting electrodes to stimulate the muscle. Sensors in the legs and arms feed back signals to a computer that coordinates the stimulators to provide limb motion. For those with high spinal cord injury, a puff and sip switch can control a computer and permit the disabled person operate the computer and communicate with the outside world.

패화석 및 이탄 처리가 수박 연작지 토양의 특성에 미치는 영향 (Impacts of Oyster Shell and Peat Treatments on Soil Properties in Continuous Watermelon Cropping Greenhouse Plots)

  • 단일작물 연작지에서는 일반적으로 토양의 물리 화학적 특성에 많은 문제점을 가지고 있다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 수박연작지 토양을 선정하여 관행구, 시비관리구, 시비관리 및 패화석 또는 이탄을 처리한 후 토양의 특성변화를 조사하고, 수박의 품질과 관련된 당도 및 과중량의 변화를 조사하였다. 토양 pH는 시비관리-패화석 1.5 t $ha^{-1}$ 처리구에서 약간 증가하는 경향이 있었으나, 모든 다른 처리구에서는 변하지 않거나 약간 감소하였다. 토양유기물함량은 예상되었던 바와 같이 모든 이탄 처리구에서 증가하였고, 패화석 처리구에서는 지속적으로 감소하였다. 토양 중 치환성 양이온 $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$의 농도는 시비관리구 및 시비관리-이탄 처리구에서 감소하였으나, $Ca^{2+}$의 농도만은 시비관리-패화석 처리구에서 약간 증가하였다. 또한 토양 중 수용성 음이온 $NO_3^-$, $Cl^-$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$, ${PO_4}^{3-}$의 농도는 모든 처리구에서 지속적으로 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 그러므로 이러한 양이온과 음이온의 농도 감소로 인하여 관행구를 제외한 모든 처리구에 전기전도도(EC)의 감소로 나타났으며, 이러한 결과는 시비관리, 시비관리-패화석, 시비관리-이탄 처리가 토양조건을 양호한 상태로 변화 시킬 수 있다는 근거를 제공하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 처리는 수박의 품질에는 뚜렷한 영향을 주지 않았다.

녹용약침(鹿茸藥鍼)이 CIA 모델 생쥐의 염증인자 생성억제에 미치는 영향 (The Ability of Cervus Elaphus Sibiricus Herbal Acupuncture to Inhibit the Generation of Inflammatory Enzymes on Collagen-induced Arthritis Mice)

  • Backgrounds : Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA) is known as the chronic inflammatory diseasethat induces persistent inflammation in the joint cavity. The destruction of cartilage occurs as the result of bones destoyed by pannus, several influential cytokines induced by the synovial capsulitis, varieties of proteinases, $O_2$ radicals, and the secondary degenerative changes of articular cartilage. The type 2 collagen-induced arthritis model is used in recent experimental research on rheumatoid arthritis. Cervus elaphus sibiricus (Nockyong) has the effect of relieving pain by nourishing the muscles, joints, and bones. It is also known to be efficacious in promoting and enhancing the immune system. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Cervus elaphus sibiricus herbal acupuncture to inhibit the generation of proinflammatory enzyme on type 2 collagen-induced arthritis. I investigated the inhibition of mRNA transcription of MIF(macrophage migration inhibitory factor), $TNF-{\alpha}$(Tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$) and MMP-9 (matrix metalloproteinase-9) of Cervus elaphus sibiricus herbal acupuncture using an in vitro test. Also investigated was the inhibition of differentiation of Th 1 cells and activation of cytokines(MIF, $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6, MMP-9), which are known to cause initial RA ,and are also related to the morphology of the synovial membranes of the joint capsule, by an in vivo test, using CIA(collagen induced arthritis) model mice. Materials & methods : The laboratory animals used in this experiment were 4 week-old DBA female mice, weighing approximately 20 grams, and adjusted to the laboratory environment. The experiment was divided into the normal group(NOR)-no treated group, control group(CON)-CIA induced group, and sample group(SAM)-Cervus elaphus sibiricus herbal acupuncture treated group. RA was induced in the mice via injection of $50{\mu}{\ell}$ C II mixed CFA. The Cervus elaphus sibiricus herbal acupuncture solution was applied on $GB_{35}$(陽陵泉) for 26 days from the 3rd day of RA inducement. The concentration of the solution was determined via a MTT assay. To research the effect on the expression of MIF, $TNF-{\alpha}$ and MMP-9 mRNA, RT-PCR was performed on synovial membrane cells from the knee joint of CIA mice. C II induced RA knee joint's histo-chemical synovial membrane was observed using a specimen model via the Hematoxilin and Eosin dying technique. Results : The expression of mRNA of RA-related cytokines such as MIF, $TNF-{\alpha}$, and MMP-9 dosedependently decreased in the cell from the synovial membranes of the joint, which is treated with Cervus elaphus sibiricus herbal acupuncture solution. In mice treated with Cervus elaphus sibiricusherbal acupuncture, the damage of synovial membranes of the joint was lessened, and differentiation of Th 1 cells was suppressed. The activation of RA-related cytokines such as MIF was suppressed, and the generation of $TNF-{\alpha}$ and MMP-9 showed a statistically significant decreas. Conclusions : It is speculated that Cervus elaphus sibiricus herbal acupuncture has the therapeutic effect of palliating the damage of the tissue impaired by RA by inhibition of the initial RA progression and by regulating excessive differentiation of Th 1 cell as it suppresses the generation of RA-related cytokines during the highest stage of RA by acting on pro-inflammatory enzymes.
