Direct volume rendering (DVR) is an important 3D visualization method for medical images as it depicts the full volumetric data. However, because DVR renders the whole volume, regions of interests (ROIs) such as a tumor that are embedded within the volume maybe occluded from view. Thus, conventional 2D cross-sectional views are still widely used, while the advantages of the DVR are often neglected. In this study, we propose a new visualization algorithm where we augment the 2D slice of interest (SOI) from an image volume with volumetric information derived from the DVR of the same volume. Our occlusion-based DVR augmentation for SOI (ODAS) uses the occlusion information derived from the voxels in front of the SOI to calculate a depth parameter that controls the amount of DVR visibility which is used to provide 3D spatial cues while not impairing the visibility of the SOI. We outline the capabilities of our ODAS and through a variety of computer tomography (CT) medical image examples, compare it to a conventional fusion of the SOI and the clipped DVR.

In this paper attenuation effect on the measurement and the tomography of nonlinear parameter is discussed. We perform computer simulation with the method using harmonic components and the method using secondary wave components, and then estimate attenuation effect through the results and compare two measurement techniques. According to simulation result the attenuation effect is more intensive as large n and \ulcorner, and the degree of the attenuation effect is represented as error functions. In the aspect of measuremnet techniques, the method using secondary wave components is more insensitive to attenuation effect than the method using harmonic compnents. We obtain the same result in the nonlinear tomography, and show that the attenuation compensive filter is required because the whole tomogram is affected by frequency dependent attenuation(or nonlinear attenuation)

Bubble behaviors in a circular tube have been analyzed numerically and experimentally by a three-dimensional tomography method, Initially, a multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART) which showed better results for previous studies of numerical simulations has been performed to confirm the accuracy of the three-dimensional reconstruction for the two-phase flow using a computer-synthesized phantom, Then, bubble behaviors have been investigated experimentally by the three-dimensional MART method using real projected data captured simultaneously by a laser and three CCD cameras for three angles of view, Also, the transient reconstructions have been attempted to analyze the real-time oxygen-bubble movements in water by the interval of 1/30 second.
In electrical impedance tomography (EIT), we use boundary current and voltage measurements to provide the information about the cross-sectional distribution of electrical impedance or resistivity One of the major problems in EIT has been the inaccessibility of internal voltage or current data in finding the internal impedance values. We propose a new image reconstruction method using internal current density data measured by NMR. We obtained a two-dimensional current density distribution within a phantom by processing the real and imaginary MR images from a 4.7T NMR machine. We implemented a resistivity image reconstruction algorithm using the finite element method and sensitivity matrix. We presented computer simulation results of the image reconstruction algorithm and furture direction of the research.

In electrical impedance tomography (EIT), the internal resistivity distribution of the unknown object is computed using the boundary voltage data induced by different current patterns using various reconstruction algorithms. This paper presents a new image reconstruction algorithm based on the genetic algorithm (GA) via a two-step approach for the solution of the EIT inverse problem, in particular for the reconstruction of "static" images. The computer simulation for the 32 channels synthetic data shows that the spatial resolution of reconstructed images in the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the modified Newton-Raphson algorithm at the expense of an increased computational burden.rden.

Estimating the phase boundary in two-phase flow is crucial for designing and optimizing industrial processes. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a promising technique for imaging phase distribution in such flows. This paper proposes using a cuckoo search (CS) optimization algorithm to estimate the phase boundary with EIT. The boundary is parameterized using the Fourier series, and the coefficients are determined by the CS algorithm. The CS algorithm iteratively seeks the phase boundary configuration by minimizing a cost function. Computer simulations and phantom experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in estimating phase boundaries in two-phase flow.

Bubble behaviors in two-phase flows have been analyzed by tomography methods such as an algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) and a multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART). Initially, a bubbly flow and an annular flow have been investigated by cross-sectional view using computer synthesized phantoms. Two tomography methods have been compared to obtain more accurate results of the two-phase flows. Then, reconstruction of three-dimensional density distributions of phantoms with two and three bubbles have been accomplished by the MART method which provided the better results for the two-dimensional reconstructions accurately to analyze the bubble behaviors in the two-phase flow.
Human influence on soil formation has dramatically increased as the development of human civilization and industry. Increase of anthropogenic soils induced research of those soils; classification, chemical and physical characteristics and plant growth of anthropogenic soils. However there have been no reports on soil pore properties from the anthropogenic soils so far. Therefore the objectives of this study were to test computer tomography (CT) to characterize physical properties of an anthropogenic paddy field soil and to find differences between natural and anthropogenic paddy field soils. Soil samples of a natural paddy field were taken from Ansung, Gyeonggi-do (Ansung site), and samples of an anthropogenic paddy field were from Gumi in Gyeongsangnam-do (Gasan) where paddy fields were remodeled in 2011-2012. Samples were taken at three different depths and analyzed for routine physical properties and CT scans. CT scan provided 3 dimensional images to calculate pore size, length and tortuosity of soil pores. Fractal analysis was applied to quantify pore structure within soil images. The results of measured physical properties (bulk density, porosity) did not show differences across depths and sites, but hardness and water content had differences. These differences repeated within the results of pore morphology. Top soil samples from both sites had greater pore numbers and sizes than others. Fractal analyses showed that top soils had more heterogeneous pore structures than others. The bottom layer of the Gasan site showed more degradation of pore properties than ploughpan and bottom layers from the Ansung site. These results concluded that anthropogenic soils may have more degraded pore properties as depth increases. The remodeled paddy fields may need more fundamental remediation to improve physical conditions. This study suggests that pore analyses using CT can provide important information of physical conditions from anthropogenic soils.
The aim of this series of experiments was to examine the opportunity for application of X-ray computer tomography (CT) in cattle production. Firstly, tissue composition of M. longissimus dorsi (LD) cuts between the $11-13^{th}$ ribs (in Exp 1. between the $9-11^{th}$ ribs), was determined by CT and correlated with tissue composition of intact half carcasses prior to dissection and tissue separation. Altogether, 207 animals of different breeds and genders were used in the study. In Exp. 2 and 3, samples were taken from LD cuts, dissected and chemical composition of muscle homogenates was analysed by conventional procedures. Correlation coefficients were calculated among slaughter records, tissues in whole carcasses and tissue composition of rib samples. Results indicated that tissue composition of rib samples determined by CT closely correlated with tissue composition results by dissection of whole carcasses. The findings revealed that figures obtained by CT correlate well with the dissection results of entire carcasses (meat, bone, fat). Close three-way coefficients of correlation (r = 0.80-0.97) were calculated among rib eye area, volume of cut, pixel-sum of adipose tissue determined by CT and intramuscular fat or adipose tissue in entire carcasses. Estimation of tissue composition of carcasses using equations including only CT-data as independent variables proved to be less reliable in prediction of lean meat and bone in carcass ($R^2 = 0.51-0.86$) than for fat (($R^2 = 0.83-0.89$). However, when cold half carcass weight was also included in the equation, the coefficient of determination exceeded $R^2 = 0.90$. In Exp. 3 tissue composition of rib samples by CT were compared to the results of EUROP carcass classification. Findings revealed that CT analysis has higher predictive value in estimation of actual tissue composition of cattle carcasses than EUROP carcass classification.
Objective: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has emerged as an important optical imaging modality in non-invasive medical diagnostics. Hence, the aim of this study is to measure the similarity of the diagnosis by a traditional method using doctor's hand for feeling of pulse and by the non-contact/non-invasive pulse analyzing system using OCT on Chon(寸), Kwan(關), Chuk(尺). Method: Four korean medical doctors and the non-contact/non-invasive pulse analyzing system using OCT have measured the rapidity, the dimension, and the power of pulse waves of 25 volunteers. First, four korean medical doctors measured pulse waves of volunteers. During measuring, four doctors were separated from each other and so were volunteers. And then, the pulse waves of volunteers were measured by OCT. This was performed on the right Chon(寸), Kwan(關), Chuk(尺). Results: The study showed that the traditional method and the OCT based method had the 88% matches on the values of the slow and rapid pulse condition (遲數), 64% matches on the values of the small and big pulse condition(微細弱緩大[洪]), and 72% matches on the values of the weak and strong pulse condition(虛實). Conclusions: Based on the high similarities of the measurements of two approaches, we suggest that the OCT based pulse diagnosis method is useful for compensating the traditional method for the pulse diagnosis.
