Current Status and Tasks of the Utilization of Computer Textbooks in Elementary Schools (초등학교 컴퓨터 교과서 활용 현황 및 과제)

  • Since the educational guideline on Information and Communication Technology(ICT) was announced, almost every school has taught about ICT during the discretionary classes. Although research on the computer curriculum and comparative studies on computer textbooks have been conducted, a study on the current status of the use of computer textbooks has not been carried out yet. On the basis of such needs, this study was conducted to investigate the current status of the use of computer textbooks in elementary schools(i.e. how teachers use computer textbooks in schools, and what teachers and students think about computer textbooks), and to suggest ideas to be considered in order to improve the quality of computer textbooks. The main finding of this study is that although most teachers use computer textbooks, the frequency of use is low and teachers use the textbook by revising or complementing its content. Also, most teachers respond negatively to some aspects of computer textbooks(i.e. level-based learning, reconstructional facility, systemicity, enhancement of exploring and creative ability, induction of interest, enhancement of self-directed learning, and assignments). In contrast with this result, students respond negatively only to the vocabularies used in computer textbooks. In addition, teachers showed significantly different responses according to their age and teaching experiences, and students demonstrated significantly different responses according to their gender and the frequency of the use of computer textbooks.

  • Gifted education has drawn much attention in education in recent years and gifted education in computers in elementary education has been emerged as well throughout the country. Now computer algorithm education is considered as a core subject in the area because computer algorithm is the essence of computer technology on which information society relies technically, and also it provides theoretical basis for problem solving using computers. And we observe that fostering learner's creativity is crucial in learning computer algorithms because problem solving requires creativity in general. In the paper, we discuss the procedure to foster learner's creative problem solving ability which would greatly help students learn computer algorithms, and then we discuss how we can make algorithmic ideas into reality. Furthermore, we note that an appropriate level education is necessary for better results for outstanding students in the program, and lastly we propose ideas to improve current gifted elementary education in computers. The content of the paper is largely originated from experiences of teaching gifted elementary students conducted by a local university and sponsored by its municipal government for six years.

  • This study is a basic step research for developing mathematics teacher education program using the potential power of explorative softwares for learning geometry. This study investigates the characteristics of the softwares and noteworthy points in its applying process. Analizing an impact of this softwares on the mathematics leaching and learning, this study presents the desirable direction for developing the teacher education program for mathematics teachers to be ableto teach successfully. Focusing on GSP as an to manage classrooms of the 21st century successfully. Focusing on GSP as an excellent explorative software used widely in the current mathematics classrooms, this study investigates the potential contents to be used in the teacher education program for mathematics teachers to get new kinds of experiences about the softwares and suggests implications for choosing contents and instructional methods of the program using the softwares.

  • With the rapid development in computer hardware and software in recent years, the contents and methods of teaching English have been altered greatly. The use of multimedia and the Internet as a means of language teaching is increasing as information technology accelerates. Using multimedia and the Internet in language teaching allows teachers to have more time to devote to interacting with their students. Above all, it arouses in students the motivation for learning and enables each student to study with the speed commensurate to his/her own ability. Both teachers and students can choose their own style that is most efficient for their classes. When students are efficiently stimulated through visual and auditory materials, they can be more easily motivated to utilize and develop creative techniques by using multimedia and the Internet. Thus, in the information age, it would be desirable to innovate the existing concepts of lineal education and allow more student-centered lessons to more readily expose students to contents and experiences according to their own demands.

  • The purpose of thesis is to design and implement an efficient Internet-Based courseware which facilitates the problem solving learning. This courseware was developed in order to provide important foundations of learning in open-education environment using WWW. The targeted level is elementary students, To do this, the definition of problem solving, its processes, and advantages or pitfalls of computer-based problem solving learning were examined, with the advantage of using WWW as an educational tool. The theme of implemented courseware was selected from SATIS which is relevant for the problem solving learning. The courseware has three main parts; learning activity module, teaching activity module, and learning tool module. The learning activity module controls courseware flows and was implemented in accordance with the problem-based teaming processes. It: can be proceeded either sequential way or random access by setting linker. The advantage of random accessing method is that it may facilitate student learning because each student can regulate their learning processes which correspond to their own experiences. The teaching activity module provides for teachers useful informations for helping student's learning and it also can be used as an assessment tool for student's achievements, The learning: tool module consists of conversational note, e-mail address, help, and search tool. It is linked with learning activity module and teaching activity module so that teachers and students can actively participate in teaching-learning processes.

  • With wide spread of smart devices, the use of children's smart devices were increased. We have performed an exploratory study about children's use of smart devices in the viewpoint of lives of children. The children was encouraged on the school centered learning by their parents. In this study, we wanted to explore the state of life of children's using of smart devices in the view of the children's life at the age of information society. The results show that there was a difference in children's using of smart devices between big and small city. This research shows that the students have the lack of the experiences of learning of desired usages and learning with devices. In the play with the non-electronic media, outside play was more than indoor play. Half of the answers at the amount of time to play the game and to watch the TV were "within an 1 hour". We know that the proportion of children's indoor play portion is more than outdoor play of it.

  • 3D TV was been able to see in the market in early in this year. Tablet PC such as ipad by Apple and Galaxytab by Samsung were introduced recently. Those are possible by developing H/W and S/W of computer technology. The needs of interactive contents in many areas including education and entertainment area are increasing rapidly according to the various information devices are or will be in the market. Fore the more, GoogleTV and AppleTV are compete each other to dominate the world market in advance recently. CookTV tries to dominate in the domestic market by upgrading the current system. Diverse information devices are in the market means various size of displayers are able to be shown in our life. As TV is fused to computer, the displayer is substituted to TV's screen and the trend of TV is became bigger. The evolved TV is able to replace the computer by connecting to the network and people want to do interactions with contents by using the bidirectional communication. Therefore, it is expected to changing the human lifestyle. It is natural that contents for all members of family are needed, since TV's screen become bigger. It is required that the contents should guarantees the accessability of information to the all of family members and the easy interaction with contents. Our goal of experiment are to analyse the influence of interaction with contents as the size of images and to analyse a learning effect of contents quantitatively by applying a statistical method. Users interacted with contents without any difficulty when they met a same dimension and shape of objects as ame dimension and shape objects in their experiences or learning, was confirmed. And the learning effect were analysed and explained by applying the correlation.

  • Web-based instructional system gives us the greatest potential for supporting face-to-face classroom instruction in many ways. With the help of the Web in high school setting, all of the participants including teachers can share many different experiences, active interactions, and even learning outcomes. In this paper, web-based instructional strategy based on constructivism for extending the geographical thought is suggested. The results from the formative assessment, as well as the statistical results from regression analysis concerning the learners' satisfaction, are also provided.

Interdisciplinary Knowledge for Teaching: A Model for Epistemic Support in Elementary Classrooms

  • Research and national standards, such as the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in the United States, promote the development and implementation of K-12 interdisciplinary curricula integrating the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science (STEM+CS). However, little research has explored how teachers provide epistemic support in interdisciplinary contexts or the factors that inform teachers' epistemic support in STEM+CS activities. The goal of this paper is to articulate how interdisciplinary instruction complicates epistemic knowledge and resources needed for teachers' instructional decision-making. Toward these ends, this paper builds upon existing models of teachers' instructional decision-making in individual STEM+CS disciplines to highlight specific challenges and opportunities of interdisciplinary approaches on classroom epistemic supports. First, we offer considerations as to how teachers can provide epistemic support for students to engage in disciplinary practices across mathematics, science, engineering, and computer science. We then support these considerations using examples from our studies in elementary classrooms using integrated STEM+CS curriculum materials. We focus on an elementary school context, as elementary teachers necessarily integrate disciplines as part of their teaching practice when enacting NGSS-aligned curricula. Further, we argue that as STEM+CS interdisciplinary curricula in the form of NGSS-aligned, project-based units become more prevalent in elementary settings, careful attention and support needs to be given to help teachers not only engage their students in disciplinary practices across STEM+CS disciplines, but also to understand why and how these disciplinary practices should be used. Implications include recommendations for the design of professional learning experiences and curriculum materials.

The Sequence Labeling Approach for Text Alignment of Plagiarism Detection

  • Plagiarism detection is increasingly exploiting text alignment. Text alignment involves extracting the plagiarism passages in a pair of the suspicious document and its source document. The heuristics have achieved excellent performance in text alignment. However, the further improvements of the heuristic methods mainly depends more on the experiences of experts, which makes the heuristics lack of the abilities for continuous improvements. To address this problem, machine learning maybe a proper way. Considering the position relations and the context of text segments pairs, we formalize the text alignment task as a problem of sequence labeling, improving the current methods at the model level. Especially, this paper proposes to use the probabilistic graphical model to tag the observed sequence of pairs of text segments. Hence we present the sequence labeling approach for text alignment in plagiarism detection based on Conditional Random Fields. The proposed approach is evaluated on the PAN@CLEF 2012 artificial high obfuscation plagiarism corpus and the simulated paraphrase plagiarism corpus, and compared with the methods achieved the best performance in PAN@CLEF 2012, 2013 and 2014. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the state of the art methods.
