  • In this paper we derive an integral formula on an (n + 3)-dimensional, compact, minimal contact three CR-submanifold M of (p-1) contact three CR-dimension immersed in a unit (4m+3)-sphere $S^{4m+3}$. Using this integral formula, we give a sufficient condition concerning the scalar curvature of M in order that such a submanifold M is to be a generalized Clifford torus.

  • The ant colony optimization (ACO) is a probabilistic Meta-heuristic algorithm which has been developed in recent years. Originally ACO was used for solving the well-known Traveling Salesperson Problem. More recently, ACO has been used to solve many difficult problems. In this paper, we develop an ant colony optimization method to solve the maximum independent set problem, which is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we suggest a new method for local information of ACO. Parameters of the ACO algorithm are tuned by evolutionary operations which have been used in forecasting and time series analysis. To show the performance of the ACO algorithm, the set of instances from discrete mathematics and computer science (DIMACS)benchmark graphs are tested, and computational results are compared with a previously developed ACO algorithm and other heuristic algorithms.

  • In this paper we study (n + 1)-dimensional compact contact CR-submanifolds of (n - 1) contact CR-dimension immersed in an odd-dimensional unit sphere $S^{2m+1}$. Especially we provide necessary conditions in order for such a sub manifold to be the generalized Clifford surface $$S^{2n_1+1}(((2n_1+1)/(n+1))^{\frac{1}{2}})\;{\times}\;S^{2n_2+1}(((2n_2+1)/(n+1)^{\frac{1}{2}})$$ for some portion (n1, n2) of (n - 1)/2 in terms with sectional curvature.

  • This paper studies fracture initiation direction of two parallel non-coplanar cracks of equal length. Using the dislocation pile-up modelling, singular integral equations for two parallel cracks subjected to mixed-mode loading are derived and the crack-tip field including singular and non-singular terms is obtained. The kinking angle is determined by using the maximum hoop stress criterion, or the ${\sigma}_{\theta}$-criterion. Results are presented for simple uniaxial tension and biaxial loading. The biaxiality ratio has a noticeable influence on crack growth direction. For the case of biaxial tension, when neglecting the T-stress the crack branching angle is overestimated for small crack inclination angles relative to the largest applied principal stress direction, and underestimated for large crack inclination angles.

  • In this paper, a methodology to simulate the whole-building behaviour of the tall building under fire is developed by the author using a 3-D nonlinear finite element method. The mechanical and thermal material nonlinearities of the structural members, such as the structural steel members, concrete slabs and reinforcing bars were included in the model. In order to closely simulate the real condition under the conventional fire incident, in the simulation, the fire temperature was applied on level 9, 10 and 11. Then, a numerical investigation on the whole-building response of the building in fire was made. The temperature distribution of the floor slabs, steel beams and columns were predicted. In addition, the behaviours of the structural members under fire such as beam force, column force and deflections were also investigated.

  • We use an idea of linear representations of the symmetric group to reduce the number of communication rounds in the verification protocol, proposed in Crypto 2005 by Peng et al., of a shuffling. We assume Paillier encryption scheme with which we can apply some known zero-knowledge proofs following the same line of approaches of Peng et al. Incidence matrices of 1-subsets and 2-subsets of a finite set is intensively used for the implementation, and the idea of $\lambda$-designs is employed for the improvement of the computational complexity.

  • In this study the k-fold pseudo-Cauchy's method of order k+3 is proposed from the classical Cauchy's method defined by an iteration $x_{n+1}=x_n-{\frac{f^{\prime}(x_n)}{f^{{\prime}{\prime}}(x_n)}}{\cdot}(1-{\sqrt{1-2f(x_n)f^{{\prime}{\prime}}(x_n)/f^{\prime}(x_n)^2}})$. The convergence behavior of the asymptotic error constant is investigated near the corresponding simple zero. A root-finding algorithm with the k-fold pseudo-Cauchy's method is described and computational examples have successfully confirmed the current analysis.

  • The data for the present paper was a part of a large research project conducted to assess preservice teachers' knowledge related to fractions and place value at a southwestern public university in 2007. The study utilized convenience sampling, consisting of 150 elementary preservice teachers who were enrolled in a mathematics methods course before their student teaching. The results demonstrated preservice teachers' knowledge of teaching comparison, addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions was insufficient even though these should be basic knowledge. Teacher preparation programs should emphasize profound knowledge for teaching fractions using representations.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the Problem Centered Instruction(PCI) and the Explanatory Instruction(El). Two classes of third grade children(69 children) were sampled from an elementary school in Chung-Buk and given a treatment. The results of this study as follows: (1) There was no significant difference between the PCI group and the El group. This means that the PCI doesn't decrease the computational ability, even though the ordinary calculation methods are not taught in the PCI group. (2) The PCI group got scores significantly higher than the El group on application problems. It may be interpreted that the PCI is more effective than the El in problem solving.

  • The complex variable reproducing kernel particle method (CVRKPM) and the FEM are coupled in this paper to analyze the two-dimensional potential problems. The coupled method not only conveniently imposes the essential boundary conditions, but also exploits the advantages of the individual methods while avoiding their disadvantages, resulting in improved computational efficiency. A hybrid approximation function is applied to combine the CVRKPM with the FEM. Formulations of the coupled method are presented in detail. Three numerical examples of the two-dimensional potential problems are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method.
