  • Flow analysis and performa nce evaluation have been performed for a ventilation axial-flow fan with different positions of the motor. Two different positions of motor have been tested; one is in front of the impeller and the other is behind the impeller. Flow analyses are performed by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations through a finite-volume solver. Preliminary numerical calculations are carried out to test the performances of different turbulence models, i.e., SST model, k-$\omega$ model, and k-$\varepsilon$ model with and without using empirical wall function in the flow analysis. The validation of numerical analyses has been performed in comparison with the experimental data. The numerical results for the performance characteristics of the ventilation axial-flow fan with two different positions of the motor have been presented.

  • In this study, a fluid/structure coupled analysis system using computational fluid dynamics and computational structural dynamics has been developed. The unsteady flow fields are predicted using unstructured Euler code. Coupled time-integration method (CTIM) was applied to computer simulation of the flow-induced vibration phenomena. To investigate the interaction effect of shock motions, 2-DOF airfoil systems have been studied in the subsonic and transonic flow region. Also, aeroelastic analyses for the airfoil with an arbitrary object are performed to show the analysis capability and interference effects for the complex geometries. The present results show the flutter stabilities and characteristics of aeroelastic responses with moving shock effects.

  • PURPOSES : The computational fluid dynamics of flow and fine particles in a road were set to determine the insert flow and occurrence characteristics. METHODS : The road extension was 100 m with two lanes. A one-ton truck traveled a 50-m distance. After a noise barrier was installed on one side of the road, the flow and a collision analysis were tested. RESULTS : The flow that occurred was 5 m/s beside the vehicle, and fine particulate was $5.0{\times}10^2{\mu}g/m^3$ after 20 m from the exhaust vent. CONCLUSIONS : After a collision analysis of the fine particulate on the noise barrier to find the most suitable position of the filter panel in height, the bottom 1 m was the most optimum position because 88.1% of the distribution was concentrated there.

  • Abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) is a shellfish that feeds on kelp and, as a product, it can often achieve a high market value. However, the dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in coastal waters in Korea have been negatively impacted by pollution from many anthropogenic sources. Herein, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package was used to analyze the distribution of the DO concentration within an abalone containment structure. A finite volume approach was used to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations combined with a $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model to describe the flow. The distribution of DO was determined within the control volume domain, and the transport equations of the pollutants were interpreted using a CFD model. The CFD analysis revealed that more than 60% and 30% of the relative oxygen concentration in one and two containers, respectively, was maintained when the flow acts along the six sheets of polyethylene plates. Therefore, it is clear that the abalone plate shelters should be placed parallel to the flow.

  • A fluid transient analysis on the Koreasat 1 & 2 pipeline system is conducted through numerical parametric studies in which unsteady friction results are compared with quasi-steady friction results and show relatively accurate prediction of the response curve with the unsteady friction. The code developed and used in this analysis has finished verification through comparing with the original Zielke model, the full and recursive convolution model and quasi-steady model as a reference. The unsteady friction is calculated by the recursive convolution Zielke model in which a complete evolution history of velocity field is no longer required so that it makes the fluid transient analysis on the complicated system possible. The results show that the application of quasi-steady friction to model cannot predict the entire response curve properly except the first peak amplitude but the application of unsteady friction to model can predict reasonably the response curve, therefore it is to know the characteristics of the propulsion system.

  • This study presents the Supporting platform for reactor fine flow characteristics calculation and analysis (Cilian platform), a user-friendly tool that supports the analysis and optimization of pressurized water reactor (PWR) cores with mixing vanes using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) computing. The Cilian platform allows for easy creation and optimization of PWR's main CFD calculation schemes and autonomously manages CFD calculation and analysis of PWR cores, reducing the need for human and computational resources. The platform's key features enable efficient simulation, rapid solution design, automatic calculation of core scheme options, and streamlined data extraction and processing techniques. The Cilian platform's capability to call external CFD software reduces the development time and cost while improving the accuracy and reliability of the results. In conclusion, the Cilian platform exemplifies an innovative solution for efficient computational fluid dynamics analysis of pressurized water reactor (PWR) cores. It holds great promise for driving advancements in nuclear power technology, enhancing the safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of nuclear reactors. The platform adopts a modular design methodology, enabling the swift and accurate computation and analysis of diverse flow regions within core components. This design approach facilitates the seamless integration of multiple computational modules across various reactor types, providing a high degree of flexibility and reusability.

  • The present work is concerned with heat and mass transfer of an electrically conducting second grade MHD fluid past a semi-infinite stretching sheet with convective surface heat flux. The analysis accounts for thermophoresis and thermal radiation. A similarity transformations is used to reduce the governing equations into a dimensionless form. The local similarity equations are derived and solved using Nachtsheim-Swigert shooting iteration technique together with Runge-Kutta sixth order integration scheme. Results for various flow characteristics are presented through graphs and tables delineating the effect of various parameters characterizing the flow. Our analysis explores that the rate of heat transfer enhances with increasing the values of the surface convection parameter. Also the fluid velocity and temperature in the boundary layer region rise significantly for increasing the values of thermal radiation parameter.

  • In the present study a method of computing fluid-structure interaction is presented to simulate the deformation shape of an oil fence which is used to contain or to divert the split oil in sea water. The computation is performed by taking into account of the force and moment balance in each computational element of the oil fence. The forces and moments acting on each element of the structure is computed from the flow analysis, which in turn is used to predict deformed shape of the structure until the procedure converges. The flexibility of the oil fence was also considered in the analysis. It is shown from the present study that the predicted deformed shapes agree quite well with the available experiment data.

  • In this study, fluid-induced vibration (FIV) analyses have been conducted for tall building structure. In order to investigate the aeroelastic responses of tall building due to wind load, advanced computational analysis system based n computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed. Fluid domains are modeled using the computational grid system with local grid deforming technique. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of tall structure for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Detailed aeroelastic responses and results are presented to show the physical phenomenon of the tall building.

  • When the steam is used as working fluid in fluid machinery, different from other gases as air, phase transition (steam condensation) can occur and it affects not only the flow fields, but also machine performance & efficiency. Therefore, considering phase transition phenomena in CFD calculation is required to achieve accurate prediction of steam flow and non-equilibrium wet-steam model is needed to simulate realistic steam condensing flow. In this research, non-equilibrium wet-steam model is implemented on in-house code(T-Flow), the flow fields including phase transition phenomena in convergent-divergent nozzle are studied and compared to results of advance researches.
