  • The hydraulic design optimization and performance analysis of mixed-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion has been carried out using mean streamline analysis and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. In the present study, the conceptual design optimization has been formulated with a non-linear objective function to minimize the fluid dynamic losses, and then the commercial CFD code was incorporated to allow for detailed flow dynamic phenomena in the pump system. Newly designed mixed-flow model pump has been tested in the laboratory. Predicted performance curves by the CFD code agree very well with experimental data for a newly designed mixed-flow pump over the normal operating conditions. The design and prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently as a unified hydraulic design process of mired-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion.

  • We developed a computer program to simulate the flow field in the presence of electro-magnetic fields. The steady, two-dimensional conservation equations for mass and momentum were solved simultaneously with Maxwell equations for electro-magnetic fields. Using this program, a numerical analysis was carried out to analyze the fluid flow in the continuous casting mold with electromagnetic brake. The effects of magnetic fields size, nozzle angle and EMBR yoke position on the flow fields in the continuous casting were investigated in the present study. The flow fields with EMBR were compared with those without EMBR. We also investigated the distribution of tracer concentration as a function of time in order to calculate their residence time in the mold with EMBR. By controlling the flow fields properly using EMBR, we can prevent the direct flow impaction on the wall which can give a damage on the mold surface and reduce surface defects of stainless steel sheet products.

  • In this study, advanced computational analysis system has been developed in order to investigate flow-induced vibration(FIV) phenomenon for general stator-rotor cascade configurations. Relative movement of the rotor with respect to stator is reflected by modeling Independent two computational domains. Fluid domains are modeled using the unstructured grid system with dynamic moving and local deforming methods. Unsteady, Reynolds-averaged Wavier-stokes equations with one equation Spalart-Allmaras and two-equation SST ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence models are solved for unsteady flow problems and also relative moving and vibration effects of the rotor cascade are fully considered. A coupled implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark integration method is used for computing the governing equations of fluid-structure interaction problems. Detailed vibration responses for different flow conditions are presented and then vibration characteristics are physically investigated in the time domain as computational virtual tests.

  • A three-dimensional elastic blood vessel model with internal diameter variation is considered to investigate internal flow characteristics and effects of structural deformation. Also, computational analyses for both the rigid model and the fully-coupled FSI model have been conducted in order to compare the shear stress, pressure distribution, and flow velocity in detail. A 70% narrowing area of asymmetric blood vessel model was especially investigated to show the versatility of fluid-structure interaction phenomenon. The results reveal that effect of fluid-structure interaction is very important to accurately investigate the flow characteristics of the blood vessel.

  • The present study aims to investigate quantitatively the hydrodynamic effect on combustion process of pulverized coal particles in large scale combustion chamber using computational analysis, with a general purpose computational fluid dynamics code. Burner hydrodynamics include swirl and turbulence intensity from the burner. To understand the phenomena which are difficult to observe how flow has influence on the combustion process, comparative effect of combustion related coal properties and hydrodynamics is evaluated on flame formation and development in burner flames.

  • To analyze the three-dimensional flow in tunnel caused by operation of jet fan, both experimental and computational studies have been conducted. The experimental analysis of tunnel flow induced by jet fan is conducted on a real-scale apparatus with jet fan and tunnel, and air velocity at the monitoring points is measured for variation of fan's RPM. The three-dimensional numerical analysis including tunnel and jet fan is carried out for the same geometric configuration as the experimental analysis. The experimental and computational results are compared to examine the applicability of the numerical method.

  • This study analyzes especially drag and lift models recently developed for fluid-solid, fluid-fluid or liquid-liquid two-phase flows to understand their applicability on the computational fluid dynamics, CFD modeling of pulsatile blood flow. Virtual mass effect and the effect of red blood cells, RBCs aggregation on CFD modeling of blood flow are also shortly reviewed to recognize future tendencies in this field. Recent studies on two-phase flows are found as very useful to develop more powerful drag-lift models that reflect the effects of blood cell's shape, deformation, concentration, and aggregation.

  • After the collapse of the Tacoma bay bridge at Tacoma Washington, the accurate prediction of aerodynamics became crucial to the sound design of bridges. CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) becomes important tool for the prediction on wind effects on the bridge due to the recent development of CFD. The usage of CFD is further prompted by the advantages in using CFD, such as low-cost and fast feed-back of design. In this paper, an unsteady compressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes code is used for the computation of the flow over bridges. Coakley's q-${\omega}$ two-equation turbulence model is used for the turbulent eddy viscosity. For accurate and stable computations, the local preconditioning method is adapted to the code. Aerodynamic characteristics of a couple bridges are presented to show the validity and the accuracy of the method.

  • In this study, steady and unsteady aerodynamic analyses of a huge rocket configuration have been conducted in a transonic flow region. The launch vehicle structural response are coupled with the transonic flow state transitions at the nose of the payload fairing. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for aeroelastic computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Navier-Stokes equations using the structured grid system have been applied to the rocket configurations. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for rocket design and test engineers.
