  • This paper is concerned with a development and evaluation of heuristic algorithms for the n-job, M-stage flowshop with sequence dependent setup times. Three heuristic algorithms, CAIDAN, DANNEN and PETROV, are proposed. The makespan is taken as a performance measure for the algorithms. The experiment for each algorithm is designed for a $4{\times}3{\times}3$ factorial design with 360 observations. The experimental factors are PS (ratio of processing times to setup times), M (number of machines), and N (number of jobs). The makespan of the proposed heuristic algorithms is compared with the optimal makespan obtained by the complete enumeration method. The result of comparision of performance measure is called a relative error. The mean relative errors of CAIDAN, DANNEN and PETROV algorithms are 4.488%. 6.712% and 7.282%, respectively. The computational results are analysed using SPSS. The experimental results show that the three factors are statistically signiticant at 5% level.

  • The biased zero-error probability and its related algorithms require heavy computational burden related with some summation operations at each iteration time. In this paper, a recursive approach to the biased zero-error probability and related algorithms are proposed, and compared in the simulation environment of shallow water communication channels with ambient noise of biased Gaussian and impulsive noise. The proposed recursive method has significantly reduced computational burden regardless of sample size, contrast to the original MBZEP algorithm with computational complexity proportional to sample size. With this computational efficiency the proposed algorithm, compared with the block-processing method, shows the equivalent robustness to multipath fading, biased Gaussian and impulsive noise.

  • Emergent computing paradigms such as genetic algorithms have found increased use in problems in engineering design. These computational tools have been shown to be applicable in the solution of generically difficult design optimization problems characterized by nonconvexities in the design space and the presence of discrete and integer design variables. Another aspect of these computational paradigms that have been lumped under the bread subject category of soft computing, is the domain of artificial intelligence, knowledge-based expert system, and machine learning. The paper explores a machine learning paradigm referred to as teaming classifier systems to construct the high-quality global function approximations between the design variables and a response function for subsequent use in design optimization. A classifier system is a machine teaming system which learns syntactically simple string rules, called classifiers for guiding the system's performance in an arbitrary environment. The capability of a learning classifier system facilitates the adaptive selection of the optimal number of training data according to the noise and multimodality in the design space of interest. The present study used the polynomial based response surface as global function approximation tools and showed its effectiveness in the improvement on the approximation performance.

  • An automatic switch among ensembles of clustering algorithms is proposed as a part of the bibliographic big data retrieval system by utilizing a fuzzy inference engine as a decision support tool to select the fastest performing clustering algorithm between fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering, Newman-Girvan clustering, and the combination of both. It aims to realize the best clustering performance with the reduction of computational complexity from O($n^3$) to O(n). The automatic switch is developed by using fuzzy logic controller written in Java and accepts 3 inputs from each clustering result, i.e., number of clusters, number of vertices, and time taken to complete the clustering process. The experimental results on PC (Intel Core i5-3210M at 2.50 GHz) demonstrates that the combination of both clustering algorithms is selected as the best performing algorithm in 20 out of 27 cases with the highest percentage of 83.99%, completed in 161 seconds. The self-adapted FCM is selected as the best performing algorithm in 4 cases and the Newman-Girvan is selected in 3 cases. The automatic switch is to be incorporated into the bibliographic big data retrieval system that focuses on visualization of fuzzy relationship using hybrid approach combining FCM and Newman-Girvan algorithm, and is planning to be released to the public through the Internet.

  • With rapid growth in the complexity of large scale engineering systems, the application of multidisciplinary analysis and design optimization (MDO) in the engineering design process has garnered much attention. MDO addresses the challenge of integrating several different disciplines into the design process. Primary challenges of MDO include computational expense and poor scalability. The introduction of a distributed, collaborative computational environment results in better utilization of available computational resources, reducing the time to solution, and enhancing scalability. SORCER, a Java-based network-centric computing platform, enables analyses and design studies in a distributed collaborative computing environment. Two different optimization algorithms widely used in multidisciplinary engineering design-VTDIRECT95 and QNSTOP-are implemented on a SORCER grid. VTDIRECT95, a Fortran 95 implementation of D. R. Jones' algorithm DIRECT, is a highly parallelizable derivative-free deterministic global optimization algorithm. QNSTOP is a parallel quasi-Newton algorithm for stochastic optimization problems. The purpose of integrating VTDIRECT95 and QNSTOP into the SORCER framework is to provide load balancing among computational resources, resulting in a dynamically scalable process. Further, the federated computing paradigm implemented by SORCER manages distributed services in real time, thereby significantly speeding up the design process. Part 1 covers SORCER and the algorithms, Part 2 presents results for aircraft panel design with curvilinear stiffeners.

  • Segmentation plays an important role in the field of image processing and computer vision. Intuitionistic fuzzy C-means (IFCM) clustering algorithm emerged as an effective technique for image segmentation in recent years. However, standard fuzzy C-means (FCM) and IFCM algorithms are sensitive to noise and initial cluster centers, and they ignore the spatial relationship of pixels. In view of these shortcomings, an improved algorithm based on IFCM is proposed in this paper. Firstly, we propose a modified non-membership function to generate intuitionistic fuzzy set and a method of determining initial clustering centers based on grayscale features, they highlight the effect of uncertainty in intuitionistic fuzzy set and improve the robustness to noise. Secondly, an improved nonlinear kernel function is proposed to map data into kernel space to measure the distance between data and the cluster centers more accurately. Thirdly, the local spatial-gray information measure is introduced, which considers membership degree, gray features and spatial position information at the same time. Finally, we propose a new measure of intuitionistic fuzzy entropy, it takes into account fuzziness and intuition of intuitionistic fuzzy set. The experimental results show that compared with other IFCM based algorithms, the proposed algorithm has better segmentation and clustering performance.
