Simulation programs have been developed and used as an attempt to improve the accuracy of Non-Destructive Evaluation(NDE) techniques. The applicability of these programs is very limited, however, because it is difficult to describe the delicacy of the propagation of stress waves. To investigate the applicability of the finite element analysis for stress wave-based NDE techniques numerical simulation for Impact-Echo method and SASW method is performed. The numerical studies are performed to determine the essential parameters such as contact time of impact load, mesh size and time step size. These studies show that the choice of parameter is very important for improving the accuracy and confidence of the numerical procedure and, thereby, the applicability of the numerical analysis for stress wave-based NDE techniques
System identification techniques can be used to build a baseline modal model for a flawed structure that has no modal information on its as-built state. The accuracy of a system identification proposed by Stubbs and Kim is analyzed for plate-girder bridges and its impact on the accuracy of damage detection in those structures is also analyzed. A laboratory-scale model plate-girder is experimentally tested and the initial four bending modes are examined for certain damage scenarios. The performance of individual baseline modal models is assessed by detecting damage in the model structure.
Continuous, discrete and semi continuous HMM systems are used for the speech recognition. Discrete systems have the advantage of low run-time computation. However, vector quantization reduces accuracy and this can lead to poor performance. Continuous systems let us get good correctness but they need much calculation so that occasionally they are unable to be used for practice. Although there are semi-continuous systems which apply advantage of continuous and discrete systems, they also require much computation. In this paper, we proposed the way which reduces calculation for continuous systems. The proposed method has the same computational load as discrete systems but can give better recognition accuracy than discrete systems.
The existing numerical approximations of convection flux, especially the spatial higher-order difference schemes, in unstructured cell-centered finite volume methods are examined in detail with each other and evaluated with respect to the accuracy through their application to a 2-D benchmark problem. Six higher-order schemes are examined, which include two second-order upwind schemes, two central difference schemes and two hybrid schemes. It is found that the 2nd-order upwind scheme by Mathur and Murthy(1997) and the central difference scheme by Demirdzic and Muzaferija(1995) have more accurate prediction performance than the other higher-order schemes used in unstructured cell-centered finite volume methods.
The three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been solved by a node-centered finite volume method with unstructured hybrid grids. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the artificial compressibility algorithm and convective fluxes are obtained by Roe's flux difference splitting scheme with linear reconstruction of the solutions. Euler implicit method with Jacobi matrix solver is used for the time-integration. The viscous terms are discretised in a manner to handle any kind of grids such as tetragedra, prisms, pyramids, hexahedra, or mixed-element grid. Inviscid bump flow is solved to check the accuracy of high order convective flux discretisation. And viscous flows around a circular cylinder and a sphere are studied to show the efficiency and accuracy of the solver.
The best available solution to predict the fatigue life of structural steels is the implementation of EPFM approach based on the principles and techniques of elasto plastic fracture mechanics. To predict the fatigue life, the conventional Paris law has been modified by substituting the range of J-value denoted by ΔJ for ΔK that is calculated by the proposed p-version model. The proposed P-version finite element model is formulated by the incremental theory of Plasticity that consists of the constitutive equation fur elastic-perfectly plastic materials, Tresca/von-Mises yield criteria, and associated flow rule. The experimental fatigue test is conducted with five UP(Center Clucked Panels) specimens to validate the accuracy of the p-version finite element model. Also, the results obtained by LTM approach have been compared with those by EPFM approach.
The purpose of this study is to survey the shape finding of the plane truss structures under the prescribed displacement mode by the shape analysis. The shape analysis is peformed by the existence condition of a solution and Moore-Penrose generalized inverse matrix, and the prescribed displacement mode is the homologous deformation of structures. The shape analysis of structures is a kind of inverse problem and become the problem of a nonlinear equation. Newton-Raphson method is used to improve the accuracy of approximated solution. To prove the accuracy and the effectiveness of this method, four different shape examples are analyzed.
Eigenvalue reduction schemes approximate the lower eigenmodes that represent the global behavior of the structures. In the, we proposed a two-level condensation scheme(TLCS) for the construction of a reduced system. In first step, the of candidate elements by energy estimation, Rayleigh quotient, through Ritz vector calculation, and next, the primary degrees of freedom is selected by sequential elimination from the degrees of freedom connected the candidate elements in the first step. In the present study, we propose TLCS combined with iterative improved reduced system(IIRS) to increase accuracy of higher modes intermediate range. Also, it possible to control the accuracy of the eigenvalues and eigenmodes of the reduced system. Numerical examples demonstrate performance of proposed method.
An enhanced solution recovery method for recovering accurate derivatives such as moments, or shears, from finite element solutions for $C^{0}$ beam and plate is presented. In the enhanced method, the square of the residuals in the equilibrium equations is included. Results are compared with those of standard Zienkiewicz-Zhu methods. Numerical examples show that in the global projection, the enhanced technique improves the accuracy of projected solution significantly. In the local projection, the enhanced method circumvents the numerical ill-conditioning which occurs in some meshes, and usually recovers derivatives with better accuracy.y.
Procedures are investigated by which nonlinear finite element shell analysis algorithms can be simplified to provide more cost effective approximate analyses of orthogonally-reinforced concrete flat plate structures. Two alternative effective stiffness formulations, and an unbalanced force formulation, are described. These are then implemented into a nonlinear shell analysis algorithm. Nonlinear geometry, three-dimensional layered stress analyses, and other general formulations are bypassed to reduce the computational burden. In application to standard patch test problems, these simplified approximate analysis procedures are shown to provide reasonable accuracy while significantly reducing the computational effort. Corroboration studies using various simple and complex test specimens provide an indication of the relative accuracy of the constitutive models utilized. The studies also point to the limitations of the approximate formulations, and identify situations where one should revert back to full nonlinear shell analyses.
