The point load test (PLT) is a widely-used alternative method in the field to determine the uniaxial compressive strength due to its simple testing machine and procedure. The point load test index can estimate the uniaxial compressive strength through conversion factors based on the rock types. However, the mechanism correlating these two parameters and the influence of the mechanical properties on PLT results are still not well understood. This study proposed a theoretical model to understand the mechanism of PLT serving as an alternative to the UCS test based on laboratory observation and literature survey. This model found that the point load test is a self-confined compression test. There is a compressive ellipsoid near the loading axis, whose dilation forms a tensile ring that provides confinement on this ellipsoid. The peak load of a point load test is linearly positive correlated to the tensile strength and negatively correlated to the Poisson ratio. The model was then verified using numerical and experimental approaches. In numerical verification, the PLT discs were simulated using flat-joint BPM of PFC3D to model the force distribution, crack propagation and BPM properties' effect with calibrated micro-parameters from laboratory UCS test and point load test of Berea sandstones. It further verified the mechanism experimentally by conducting a uniaxial compressive test, Brazilian test, and point load test on four different rocks. The findings from this study can explain the mechanism and improve the understanding of point load in determining uniaxial compressive strength.
To investigate the engineering properties of basalt in Cheju Island, rock samples of Pyosenri basalt, trachy-basalt and scoria were taken from Seoguipo-Si Seongsan-Eup area. The laboratory tests such as absorption test, specific gravity test, permeability test, Schmidt hammer test, elastic wave test and uniaxial compressive testwere carried out for the collected rock samples. The absorption, the specific gravity, the permeability, the elastic wave velocity and uniaxial compressive strengthwere investigated and analyzed as the results of these tests. As the result of regression analysis for the relationship between the rebound values from Schmidt hammer test and the uniaxial compressive strengths from uniaxial compressive test, especially, estimation equations were proposed using the rebound values from Schmidt hammer test. Therefore, the simple method to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength was provided.

Compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete was tested by the core and by the non-destructive testing. A prediction model of compressive strength considering the replacement level of recycled aggregate was suggested by multi-regression analysis and was compared with test results. Also, Test results showed that the ratio of compressive strength by core and non-destructive testing to actual was somewhat affected by the replacement level of recycled aggregate.

For estimating compressive strength of concrete, non-destructive test has conducted generally. It used experimental equation to calculate compressive strength from construction. This study investigated experiment to apply non-destructive test, based on fresh property, compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity of high performance concrete. And it conducted to compare various proposed equation.
PURPOSES: This study is to estimate nondestructive strength equation based on probability for bridges using field test data. METHODS : In this study, a series of the field inspection and the test have been performed on 297 existing bridges, in order to evaluate the bridges, based on the test results of the in-depth inspection, and the estimated strengths by means of the nondestructive strength equations are analyzed and compared with results of the core specimen strengths. RESULTS : According to results of analyses, In case of standard design compressive strength of concrete is 18MPa, 21MPa, similar reliability of RILEM equation were 0.89~0.90, but in case of standard design compressive strength of concrete is 35MPa, 40MPa were 0.4~0.56. According to standard design compressive strength of concrete is 40MPa, similar reliability of ultrasonic pulse velocity method equation were 0.56. CONCLUSIONS :RILEM equation had high similar reliability than other equation in case of standard design compressive strength of concrete is 18MPa, 21MPa, but had low similar reliability than other equation in case of standard design compressive strength of concrete is 35MPa, 40MPa. and ultrasonic pulse velocity method equation had low similar reliability than other equation in case of standard design compressive strength of concrete is 40MPa.
Aggregates mineralogical, and petrographic properties directly affect the mechanical properties of the produced high strength. This study is focused on the effects of magmatic, sedimentary, and metamorphic aggregates on the performance of high strength concrete. In this study, the effect of the mineralogical properties of aggregates on the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of high-strength concrete was estimated by Artifical Neural Network (ANN). To estimate the compressive strength and elasticity modules, 96 test specimens were produced. After 28 days under suitable conditions, tests were carried out to determine the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the test specimens. This study also focused on the application of artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the 28-day compressive strength and the modulus of elasticity of high-strength concrete. An ANN model is developed, trained, and tested by using the available test data obtained from the experimental studies. The ANN model is found to predict the modulus of elasticity, and 28 days compressive strength of high strength concrete well, within the ranges of the input parameters. These comparisons show that ANNs have a strong potential to predict the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of high-strength concrete over the range of input parameters considered.
Eighteen biotite granites on Andong area and twenty seven igneous rocks(diorite, granite, andesite, rhyolite) on Yeosu area were tested to evaluate the correlations between the uniaxial compressive strength values, as determined by the standard uniaxial compression test, and the corresponding results of the ultrasonic velocity. The variability of test results for each test was evaluated by calculating the coefficient of determination or variation. Results indicate that strong correlations exist between the results of uniaxial compression vs the point load, Schmidt hammer and ultrasonic velocity test. The correlation equations for predicting compressive strength using different methods are presented along with their confidence limits. Ultrasonic velocity test used provide reliable estimates of compressive strength.

In the concrete industry, efforts are being made to reduce CO2 emissions, and technologies that collect, store, and utilize CO2 have recently been studied. This study analyzed the change in compressive strength after the accelerated carbonation test of Non-Sintered Cement(NSC) mortar. Type C Fly Ash and Type F Fly Ash were mixed in a 1:1 ratio and then mixed with Blast Furnace Slag fine powder to produce NSC. The mortar produced was cured underwater until the target age. In addition, an accelerated carbonation test was conducted under the condition of a concentration of 5 (±1.0%) of CO2 gas for 14 days. The mortar compressive strength was measured before and after 14 days of accelerated carbonation test based on the 7th and 28th days of age. As a result of the experiment, the compressive strength was improved in all binder. In general, the compressive strength of NSC mortar subjected to the accelerated carbonation test was similar to that of Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC) mortar not subjected to the accelerated carbonation test.

Recently, efforts are made to apply 200MPa levels of ultra-high strength concrete to structures exceeding 40MPa.. Ultra-high strength concrete has been steadily researched in Korea as well as abroad, and now it is equipped with 200MPa ultra-high strength concrete mixing technology. Because ultra-high strength concrete has a higher range of compressive strength than ordinary concrete, it is difficult to accurately measure the compressive strength of UHPC concrete with existing compressive strength measuring equipment and can be less reliable. In this study, the compressive strength of the SC80 was measured according to the test method to compare the compressive strength of the SC80 by applying various methods of measurement of compressive strength. The compressive strength test method measured the compressive strength according to the size of the specimen, the grinding method, and the capacity of the UTM equipment.

In the study, tensile, compression and in-plane tests about longitudinal direction of glass fiber were performed. Also, to obtain the material properties of GFRP fabric composite, tensile test was performed. All test were performed by the test method of ASTM. Maximum compressive strength was smaller than the maximum tensile strength at the longitudinal direction test results. Elastic modulus of the tensile and compressive was almost similar at the compression test results in the longitudinal direction. Based on the GFRP fabric composite test results, GF91 was showed good performance at maximum compressive, maximum strain and elastic modulus.
