  • This paper describes how to make tailored blanks of front side member that were composed of high strength steel and TRIP(TRansformation Induced Plasticity) steel for weight reduction and improvement of crash load. Tailored blanks made by laser and mash-seam welding were compared with non-tailored blanks made by spot welding. Static compression tests were performed for performance comparison of each sample. Front side members made by tailored blank were superior to those made by spot welding in the initial, but those results were inverse in the last. Average load of tailored blank in six-angle type was better than that of rectangular type.

  • When the compression members have the variable cross sections along their member axes, the determination of the elastic critical loads by classical methods becomes impossible and if possible involves complicated calculation only to obtain the approximate values of critical load. In this paper the elastic critical load coefficients of the tapered members with simply supported ends were determined by finite element method. And then the results were represented by simple algebraic equations of two parameters, a( =taper parameter) and m ( = sectional property parameter). One the basis of algebraic equations, the equivalent moment of inertia concept originally proposed by Bleich for a spesific case, are extended to the general cases.

  • The elastic critical load of a slender compression member plays an important role when the proper design of that member is required. For the tapered compression members, however, there are cases when the conventional neutral equililbrium or energy method can't be applied to the determination of critical loads of those members. In this paper, finite element method is applied to the approximate determination of the symmetrically tapered bars. Here in this paper, the bars are assumed to take sinusoidally changing shapes along their axes. The parameters considered in this study are taper parameter, $\alpha$ and the sectional property parameter, m. The computed results by finite element method are represented in the forms of algebraic equations. Regression technique is employed to determine the coefficients of algebraic equations. The critical loads estimated by the proposed algebraic equations coincide fairly well with those of finite element method.

  • The current design practice of an electric transmission tower is based on the allowable stress design. Design strengths of the electric transmission tower's compression member are determined by buckling the strength of the member itself without considering joint strength. There is a possibility of a joint failure prior to the buckling of a member. Therefore, in this study, joint strength is calculated for various member forces, and the shape of joint and database of strength were established. These data was compared with the member strength obtained from previous research studies based on an equivalent nonlinear analysis technique. Finally, practical evaluation and design method to distinguish failure mode in an electric transmission tower member is proposed.

  • In this study, Intersecting Tensegrity System that is integrated solid compression members with tension members was presented. This system is set up by connecting upper and lower compression members of pyramid shape with exterior tension members. In this system, the solid compression members are intersected each other and connected by a tension member in the center. This system is a variation of Tensegrity system, has a improved feature that the system is able to induce prestresses in all of tension members easily by adjusting the distance of a tension member in the center. The proposed system was studied by modeling, and the structural behavior of the system was investigated by mechanical analysis of the model. Furthermore, the features of the structural behavior variations was investigated when the composition elements(total height, size of surface, intersection length, etc.) are changed variously. It was also showed that the system is able to be used as a temporary space structure system with a membrane roof of inverse conical shape.

  • This study is to develop a mulit-layer glued columns for construction of Korean-style houses by using domestic small diameter logs. Dried small square lumber glued each other to develop a multi-layer glued columns and evaluated its performance of strength. Then, predicted the design load of multi-layer glued columns and make a comparison between actual load and design load of multi-layer glued columns. In the results, allowable load by allowable stress of multi-layer glued columns was measured one-third of actual columns load and prediction load was measured less than 10~30% of the actual load. Therefore, muilt-layer glued member has a standard allowable stress of compressive of 13 MPa (Larix leptolepis) and 19 MPa (Chamaecyparis obtusa) when used as columns. Also, using compression strength of small diameter square logs could calculate maximum loads of multi-layer glued member as column.

  • Cold-Formed C-section and Lipped C-section are commonly used as structural members of steel houses in Korea. Both are made of SGC41 steel. However, special Cold-Formed Sections with unique cross sectional shape have been developed and widely used in advanced countries. This research focused on the newly developed thin-walled Cold-Formed Sections which possess not only high strength and stiffness but also other advantages in construction. A series of compression tests was conducted to investigate the structural behavior of a compression member, including its load carrying capacity. Test results were compared with analytical study results.

  • Residual stress is defined as stress that already exists on a structural member from the effects of welding and plastic deformation before the application of loading. Due to such residual stress, welded H-section compression members under centroidal compression load can undergo buckling and failure for strength values smaller than the predicted buckling load and specified compressive strength. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate the effect of residual stress from welding on the determination of the buckling load and specified compressive strength of the H-section compression member according to the column length variation. A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis was performed for the H-section compression member where the welded joint was fillet welded by applying heat inputs of 3.1kJ/mm and 3.6kJ/mm using the SAW welding method.

  • Concrete filled steel tube structures were recently used in constructing high-rise buildings due to their effectiveness. Studies on concrete filled steel tubes have been focused on the experiments of uni-axial compression and bending and eccentric compression. There were also a few studies that investigated CFT member behavior under combined compression and torsion. The behavior of a circular CFT column under combined torsion and compression was theoretically investigated, considering the confinement of steel tubes on the concrete, the softening of the concrete, and the spiral effect, which were the dominant factors that influenced compression and torsion strength. The biaxial stress effects due to diagonal cracking were also taken into account. By applying those factors to compatibility and equilibrium conditions, the basic equation was derived, and the equation could be used to incorporate the torsional behavior of the entire loading history of the CFT member.

  • A tubular member with through-gusset plate is often used to transmit axial compression in an electric transmission towers. In current code, the strength of tubular member is evaluated with an effective length factor k=0.9 without considering the deformation of boundary element. A buckling strength of member with end gusset plate is affected by stiffness ratio($\beta$) and the length ratio(G) between main tubular member and end gusset plate. In this study theoretical mechanism based on the elastic buckling behavior was investigated, and finite element analysis was performed to propose a formula for the buckling strength and effective length factor of tubular member in elsatic and inelastic ranges.
